The Syndicate is a British television drama anthology series written by Kay Mellor which follows members of a betting syndicate who win the lottery, with a different syndicate, story and cast each season.
The first season follows five workers at a cut-price supermarket in Leeds, UK, whose lives are turned upside down after they jointly win the lottery, going from facing redundancy and battling the present economic downturn to having more money than they ever dreamt of.
Will winning the lottery make their dreams or their nightmares come true? While they can afford their every desire, slowly they learn money doesn't always buy happiness.
Season 2 follows a syndicate of hospital workers through their incredible tale of rags to riches. Both Mandy and her daughter Becky work at St Anthony's Hospital where they're part of a lottery syndicate, along with Nurse Tom Bedford, Porter Alan Walters and Auxiliary Rose Wilson.
It was the responsibility of ditzy Becky to buy last night's lottery ticket and according to past syndicate member Helen Dolan (Sally Rogers), their numbers have come up. But Becky went to an 80s party last night and doesn't know what she's done with the ticket.
The Syndicate 3 is about new money – ordinary people who win a life changing amount of money on the lottery - set in a crumbly stately home near Scarborough, where the staff syndicate wins the lottery.
It's a premise which looks at class and social politics within the framework of a drama – 'downstairs' becoming instantly wealthier than 'upstairs'. The season explores how the lack of money and greed have a devastating effect and how a sudden change in fortune can bring about its own problems.
The Syndicate is written by Kay Mellor and produced by Rollem Productions for BBC One.
