Parys Parys is a South African sitcom produced by Stark Films and told against the backdrop of the picturesque Free State town Parys, an ordinary Afrikaans family shares their daily trials and challenges.
The Kleynhans family consists of father John, mother Elsa, son JJ (Joachim Johannes) and daughter Francoise (Fransie). Elsa's brother Klein Koos and Uncle Tjoppie the ubiquitous neighbour visit so often they may as well be part of the family.
Jan is a good oke who doesn't ask too much of life, but with an artsy wife, a teenage daughter who is almost too beautiful and smart, a son who looks like he will never have any direction, a lazy brother-in-law and a meddlesome neighbour make an ordinary day in the Kleynhans household a battlefield of laughs.
Parys Parys was produced by Human Startk and Maynard Kraak for Stark Films. The script was developed by Hélène Truter, Melt Sieberhagen and Monique Nortjé, with Maynard Kraak and Human Stark. The theme music was by Louis van Rensburg.
Jan Kleynhans
Hannes Muller stars as Jan, a family man in his late forties who is the breadwinner in the house. He was in the SADF and then studied agriculture at university. All his life he wanted to be a farmer, but his father sold the family farm from under them and disappeared to start a new life on the West Coast.
The young Jan started working as a seed rep at Super Seed. Today, Jan is an established man in the seed world and popular with farmers in the area, but to be a farmer in his own right is still his dream.
Elsa Kleynhans
The head-in-the-clouds Elsa (née le Grange), played by Esther von Waltsleben, is an attractive woman in her forties. Though she was born and bred on a farm, she is determined not to become a typical 'tannie'. She studied art appreciation in Stellenbosch and spent a year in France where she worked as an au pair.
Joachim Johannes Kleynhans
Neil Sharim plays the 19-year-old JJ, who finds himself back at home after a mysterious incident in London (something to do with a huge misunderstanding about a braai in Hyde Park), cutting short his gap year. JJ was deported after the incident and is back again in Parys, Free State.
Francoise Kleynhans
Fransie is Elsa and Jan's daughter. Elsa's decision to give her daughter a French name backfired because no one says "Fran-swaass" correctly, so she is simply known as Frans.
Uncle Tjoppie Bierman
Johan van der Merwe is the neighbour Uncle Tjoppie, who introduced himself when the Kleynhanses arrived to help with repairs to their home. It was 20 years ago and it seems as if he's never returned home. (When he had a holiday watching their house, he was give his own bunch of keys and is thus able to come and go as he pleases.)
Klein Koos le Grange
Andre Weideman plays Elsa's younger brother Klein Koos, a man in his late thirties who lives with their father Groot Koos on the farm. Lein Koos is apparently a water diviner.
