Cold Mountain is a 2003 feature film adapted from the 1993 novel of the same name by Charles Frazier, directed by Anthony Minghella.
The movie is a Civil War epic about a young Southern soldier who connects briefly with a woman before going off to war – a connection which sustains him through the horrors until their reunion, three years later.
At its heart Cold Mountain is about a passionate, unconsummated love – conducted mainly by letters which she writes and he doesn't get – between Inman and Ada, a young Confederate soldier and a preacher's daughter.
In the three years he is away, he sees terrible horrors, and eventually deserts and undertakes the long and arduous journey home.
Back on the farm, Ada has her own hardships to deal with, and just when it can't get any worse, along comes the irrepressible Ruby, who takes Ada and the farm in hand.
Meanwhile, Inman is coming across some memorable characters of his own: a murderous reverend, a miserable young widow and a wise goat herder.
