Lip Sync Battle Africa is a South African version of the American musical comedy reality competition television series based on an idea introduced to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon by John Krasinski, in which celebrities battle each other with lip sync performances of famous music videos.
Hosted by actress, radio DJ, model and television personality Pearl Thusi, Lip Sync Battle Africa is based on the contemporary craze of lip sync battling to an original track. Nigerian singer, songwriter and hip hop artist D'banj was the "colour commentator" in the first season, replaced by Nigerian entertainer Denrele Edun for the second. The function of this commentator is to add lively observations to the proceedings.
The series features celebrities going head to head – lip-syncing to the song of their choice, all while battling for the bragging rights.
Award-winning hip hop star Cassper Nyovest and actress and Club 808 host Boity Thulo were the first celebrities to lock horns, in Episode 1. Entertainer Khanyi Mbau and femme-C rap star Nadia Nakai did battle in the first episode of Season 2.
