Varsity Sing is a South African, Afrikaans-language reality competition television series hosted by Marno van der Merwe in which South Africa's top choirs compete in a knock-out format to be crowned the best university choir.
This choral competition promises to take the audience on a musical and nostalgic journey with original music, unique compositions and behind-the-scenes action telling the story of each university.
Each choir performs three songs per episode, covering traditional and new music in three of the official languages. Varsity Sing offers the audience diverse entertainment in a language everyone understands: music.
The series starts in Cape Town, showcasing the talents of the choirs from the University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape and the University of Stellenbosch.
From there it moves to Port Elizabeth, giving Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Rhodes University and Tshwane University of Technology a chance to perform for a spot in the semi-finals.
Johannesburg is up next, with the University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria and the University of Limpopo up on stage.
The first four rounds culminate in Bloemfontein with the University of the Free State, Central University of Technology and the Vaal University of Technology also vying for their spot in the semi-finals.
Only two universities per round advance to the semi-finals. Two semi-finals of four choirs each take place and the top two choirs in each semi-final progress to the Varsity Sing final.
The final is a live show with the viewers at home having a say in deciding the winner by voting for their favourite choir on the Varsity Sports app.
There are four judges at every show: the three regular judges - Loyiso Bala, Christo Burger and Marvin Kernelle - are joined by a celebrity guest judge every week.
Varsity Sing was executive produced by Francois Nolte for Green Planet Productions. The supervising producer for kykNET was Marguerite Albrecht. The musical director was Janine Neethling, with theme music by Paul Riekert.
