Season 7
This much loved institution is the dynamic backdrop for the continuing activities of two stokvels in Diepkloof, Soweto. Stokvels have been a part of African culture for decades - a place where friends meet for companionship, good times and a social way of saving money.
Since its first broadcast in 2003, Stokvel has scored high ratings in its time slot and continues to attract a large audience to the ongoing adventures of the young professional couple, Mojo Khumalo and his beautiful wife, Lerata, and their respective stokvels.
Mojo is the chairman of the men's stokvel, Majakathata, and Lerata is the treasurer of the women's society Sweet Harmony.
Sweet Harmony is chaired by the pastor's wife Masechaba Moletsane. Other members include local shebeen queen, Hazel Dube and Ayanda Twala - a township tourism operator and Lerata's best friend.
There's also sweet, naïve (and rather clueless) Pinkie Serobe.
Mojo belongs to Majakathata - a stokie that has fallen on hard times. Besides himself, there are only two other regular members so the stokie account has always looked rather depressed.
This doesn't stop Mojo and his friends from constantly thinking of new ways to find new members and make more money.
Budgets Naledi is the treasurer of this group. He thinks he knows everything there is to know about finances - but the stokie's books tell a different story.
Their funds aren't helped by the fact that Biza never pays his contributions. Biza is a character found in almost every stokie - the 'baaidjievanger'. He never has money or a job and constantly finds new and more inventive ways to get other people to buy him a drink!
Joining Majakathata for the occasional meeting is soft-hearted rugby player, Philane. He's quick on the field, but off the field - to the dismay of the guys - he is quick to break into tears.
In the first episode of Season 7: a local arts charity announces a contest to all stokvels in Soweto to come up with the most interesting fundraising idea. This sparks great excitement and competition.
While waiting to pick up Ayanda, Philane listens in on Sweet Harmony's plans and relays the information to the guys who use it to gain an advantage.
Highlights of Season 7 include Mojo taking up cycling and competing in a race, Biza losing his manhood after being cursed, Biza and Philane get caught up in an internet scam, Masechaba being forced to replace the church counsellor and Lerata saving an African prince on one of Ayanda's township tours from choking in the tavern.
For the seventh season, James Ngcobo returned to the lead role of Mojo after giving it up in Season 6 to Hamilton Dlamini.
Season 7 is directed by Vusi Dibakwane and James Ngcobo.
