Survivor South Africa: Panama
Reunion Show
Mark flies in to the Mnet, Randburg studios by helicopter, where the reunion show is being broadcast live to South Africa. He carries the votes still sealed in the box. He is welcomed warmly by the studio audience. He states that it has been a long and challenging road for everyone involved and it all now boils down to the contents of the sealed box he carries. He recounts the first few moments of the series when the plane is instructed to land off the coast of Panama. “And so begins Survivor South Africa” he states.
First to be introduced to the audience is Don – the first survivor voted off – after a montage showing events leading to his elimination is show. Mark states that the general feeling was that Rana stood no chanced against the muscled, toned folk of Aguila. But, the 2nd survivor voted off was Sam from the Aguila tribe. Sam seems to be quite overwhelmed and Mark responds that Sam is as popular as ever.
Jude – the first person to lay down her torch – is introduced next. Mark states that even in retrospect the episode in which she was eliminated still remains one of the most emotional episodes yet. Jude says that it’s still very horrible watching those scenes again. A clip showing how the voting went down after her elimination is shown next, while her reaction is captured on camera.
The next survivor voted off was Ncumisa. Mark informs her that the very week in which she was voted off, she was also voted as the most popular survivor contestant by fans. Sanele became the first survivor to leave the game hurt. Mark asks him about his arm, and Sanele replies that he still hasn’t fully recovered but that “they are 80% there”. After being asked how much weight he’d lost on the island, Sanele replies that he lost a remarkable 17kg.
Danielle was the next to be voted off the Rana tribe, but Sanele offered her his life (i.e., his torch) and she was sent to the Aguila tribe. However, she became the first survivor contestant to be voted off in back to back episodes. He asked her how would one deal with such a thing, and she humorously replied “Tranquilizers”
Nico – “the king of the one-liner” – is introduced next. Nico emerges with a no-smoking sign, and Mark states that Nico is as entertaining as always. Mark asks him to come clean; not even the production crew was aware of all the things that Nico smuggled onto the island. Nico states that he smuggled on his cigarettes, coffee beans, lighters amongst other things. Mark says that he must ask Nico about his black shorts. Nico responds that they didn’t have time and he just grabbed it. A montage of Nico’s one-liners is played and Mark says that Nico provided viewers with the most priceless moments of the series.
Meet the Jury
Clips are played showing the elimination of Brigitte, Mzi, Vanessa and Lezel, and their subsequent exile at Dead Man’s Island and their challenge to re-enter the game. Lezel, being the one to loose the challenge first is introduced next. Mark asks about the seemingly cold reception she received at DMI. She states that she wasn’t there to make any friends. Mark tells her he’s not going to let her off the hook so easily, and says that she was probably the most challenged when it came to challenges. Lezel says it’s a fair statement.
Brigitte is introduced next. Mark asks her about her 7 day stay on the island and she responds “I’ve told you before Mark, it was crap”. Mark also states that she and Nico barely looked at each other, and they should get over it because it’s just a game.
They show us a clip of the insect infestation on the island. Gareth is the next survivor to be introduced. Mark asks him if he realized how badly he was being played by the women. Gareth says that no, he wasn’t played at all. Zayn is introduced next, and is presented with the keys to the Tucson he won. Zayn says that he didn’t win the car for himself and hands over the keys to his very emotional parents.
Mzi receives a tumultuous applause from the audience, and he is clearly quite emotional. Mark informs him that courtesy of the viewing public, Mzi – the most popular survivor – has won a holiday to Sabi-Sabi. They then take a look at all the things that had been eaten while on the island. Mark asks Zayn how much weight he lost. Zayn says 20 kilos in all (10 on the island, 10 off the island). Mark asks Gareth was pelican tastes like. Gareth says “Terrible, terrible dish and no-one should ever kill a pelican”. Mark asks him were they really that hungry. Gareth responds “Yes. We were eating the snails off the rocks, we had a few mangoes left and the pelican was too friendly for its own good”
Mark states that Mzi was known as the provider on the island and how and where did he learn it all. Mzi says that he grew up fishing. After Mark asks him how he felt after he lost the last challenge to Jacinda, Mzi replies that it was “Earth shattering, but I feel like I left leaving a very good account of myself”. Mark says that Mzi is a hero to millions.
The final two survivors – Jacinda and Vanessa – are introduced to the audience. The votes are counted and Vanessa becomes the first Survivor SA winner, in a 3-2 vote.
The votes were as follows:
Brigitte votes for Vanessa “… I know I promised not to write your name down again, but this time I will make an exception…I think you did very well…”
Lezel votes for Jacinda “…It’s just a game… you don’t need to be emotionally involved to play well. I have great respect for you… “
Gareth votes for Jacinda “… It’s just a game… I think you played honestly up to a point where everything became fuzzy… you deserve it more than anyone else…”
Mzi votes for Vanessa “You’ve shown the truth of the statement that victory can go to the swift, not necessarily the strongest”
Zayn votes for Vanessa “Survivor is all about heart, you have it in abundance. Much respect, much love...”
Vanessa is overwhelmed and quite speechless. Vanessa says it was hard to be the strongest physically or emotionally, but sometimes you just had to take a step back. She also feels that she’s done nothing different from any of the other survivors.
Mark remarks to Jacinda that people’s hearts must be breaking for her, and how does she feel. Jacinda remarks that she is disappointed and that it’s natural… but that she couldn’t have picked anyone better t be in the final two with.
Mark closes the show by informed everyone that a second season of Survivor SA is on the cards and that we should stay tuned to the press for details!
