Society, I have one word for it. WOW!
Wow for the awesome acting!
Wow for the awesome story!
Wow for the awesome script!
Wow for the honest truth that is the show!
The two young girls that came up with Society, wrote the script and produced it should be so proud of themselves because I damn well am.
Makgano Mamabolo & Lodi Matsetela, girls it's gonna take a lotta work to live up to the standard you've set but for some reason, I believe you will have no problem in doing that!
I actually just remembered that Makgano was one of Khethiwe's badge ladies in Generations and really, she should not have left the show but rather stayed to help them in the scriptwriting department. Yeah, we all know they need all the help they can get. Mara ke the recent improvement is noted bafethu.
If you have not heard of Society and are wondering what I'm on about then check out Khuselwa's Society Column to get all the info on what it's all about.
The four main characters of the show are very real and they go through issues that we go through on a daily basis and there's just something so great about watching something on TV and going "This happened to me too!".
Inno, Beth, Akua & Lois.
My favourite character out of the lot is Inno - The celebrity gal who does the weather forecast on TV.
She is a typical joburg gal (yes Jozi gals, some of you are like that) and has lots of boyfriends who are Ministers of their different portfolios, whether it's finance, transport or just without a portfolio. They showed us her apartment once and I was like "Yeah, I've seen places like this".
I think the reason she's my favourite character is because we all know someone who is just like Inno! She's the person who goes through men like crazy, who never has money, who expects men to pay for whatever she wants, who tells it like it is, who is generally just a dreamer AND what would a joburg gal be without the cheap ugly weave! No offence.
I am patiently awaiting the last episode on Thursday but so far a classic scene for me was the one where Akua found out that Inno's toyboy was actually her toyboy!
That scene was done exactly how things go when two gals who are dating the same guy come face to face ekasi. I know, I have been through that myself. (Thank my lucky stars that there were people who came to pull that heffa away coz lord knows I would have been the one left with a blue eye.)
The only irritation I have with Akua is her constant nagging about them getting together, damn the gal is desperate for attention maan. I could also identify with Inno when Akua was going on about how they should contribute this amount of money for this and that and you go, "Damn, do these people know what money problems I got?" That's the only reason why I'm not in any Society, coz really, you're made to feel like you're the only one who doesn't have money. Then people talk about Umgalelo we R1000 a month and you're too shy to actually admit that you can't afford that much, you kinda think of an excuse when it's time to give someone the money. Eish, life!!
When I first heard the SABC 1 promo about them being Mzansi's Storytellers, I thought, "How True!". I think they are becoming such a strong force and if Society is a preview of what is yet to come then I'm a fan for life!
If you haven't been watching Society then please catch the show, this Thursday, 21:00 on SABC 1.
I just needed to "formally" give props to the gals for a task well executed!
Lodi & Makgano are beautifully representing for them young, black and fabulous sistas so I hope they have inspired you as much as they have inspired me.
One thing you can learn from Inno? Dream Big!
