Seeing Thembi Nyandeni, whom I shall always remember as "Umfazi we Phepha", in Generations was such a fresh experience.
She has been in this game for so long, doing her thing beautifully and you just gotta love her!
She's acting the part of Ntombi's mom. Yeah, the one who's sympathetic to her child's dilemma but is too scared of her husband to stand up for the kids.*sigh*.
Oh, I just hate this type of stereotyping, African women are strong, ok? That's all I will say.
I will not mention the fact that I am very irritated with Trevor's (the chief) "Sarafina-type-of-acting" in a soapie. Just when we were starting to see an improvement with Leleti (a damn good actress that will just never be soapie material), then comes "Chief Khumalo" or whatever it is they call him there.
* Every word he utters is accompanied by a special hand gesture. Yes, each word! "Stop using your hands so much!"
I watched tonight's episode and I couldn't help thinking of Eddie Murphy's Coming To America. Only this time Eddie's character, Akeem was being played by Sonia Mbele as Ntombi Khumalo.
Generations: Ntombi has to marry Sphamandla but left home and went to Jozi, fell in love with Sbusiso, they want to get married but her father won't hear of it. The only other person who has been in on her secret and the fact that her father is a chief is her brother, Samuel.
Coming to America: Akeem has to marry some girl but he leaves "Zamunda" and went to New York, fell in love with Lisa, wants to marry her but his father won't hear of it. The only other person who has been in on his secret and the fact that his father is a king is his servant, Sammy.
Samuel, Sammy, one and the same thing maan.
In Coming to America, it was Sammy who was first discovered, when the king got to town so please take a guess who is the first to get discovered when Ntombi's dad comes to town? Samuel!
Ok, as much as I'm loathing the soap right now, I couldn't help laughing at Samuel's reaction to seeing his dad!
For some weird and stupid reason, Samuel went to Anne's hotel to return a scarf she was wearing at Ntombi's engagement party. Anne had forgotten, Samuel remembers. I mean, you're serving customers at a huge bash, one person forgets their scarf behind, they've forgotten all about it but you remember? He sure is very observant, we'll give him that.
As I was saying, Sammy is whistling & walking down the corridor, after leaving Anne's hotel room (why does Anne stay at a hotel anyway?), and he runs into his father and his entourage.
His father goes "Samuel!! What are you doing here? I thought you were in Taiwan?"
After being dumbfounded for a minute, Sammy decided that "running" will be better than answering his father's question so "a ja fatshe".
His father's subjects were then ordered to chase after him..we'll se what happens next.
(I don't know if the "Samuel paying Anne attention" thing was only leading to this scene but a word of caution to the G Spot is that if they really want to disgust us then they must get Samuel involved with Anne...eewww...)
I appreciate the effort made by the G Spot team in bringing us Trevor & Thembi to spice things up but I am not feeling the storyline. The Ntombi I am seeing on the show right now is not the headstrong character we have been seeing for the last couple of years. At some point she was even considering bowing down to her father's pressure and actually marrying the Sphamandla guy?
Where has her father been all this damn time? Where the hell is this Sphamandla? Does he want to marry Ntombi?
What the hell is going on???............
This particular plot has just taken over, followed by Karabo's addiction to eavesdropping on every conversation between Ntombi & Sbusiso.
All of a sudden Ntombi wants kids, Anne is interrupting meetings for "baby talk" that gets her k**k'd out by a guilt stricken Karabo, the wardrobe guys can't seem to find the right size shirts for Mashaba Jnr aka Nameless so we end up being exposed to his boep, that is supposed to be a six pack. Ajax is now a hip hop artist?
*Ajax better watch it coz the last time G Spot had a singer as skinny as he is, he ended up being killed. Y'all remember Spuku don't you?
*Generations better watch it coz the last time a soap had rappers/singers, it ended up being canned. Y'all remember Backstage, don't you?
What else is on G? A lot of boring stuff that I have no time to write about...
*Khethi & Khapisto have sold the Mogale house to Mashaba and they're looking for a place and financial advise on how to take care of the R2 million. I don't know why they are still in Generations.
If they want to invest their money they must go buy cows or pigs and start a farming business away from my TV. I'm sure there's a need for Employment Equity / BEE in the farming industry.
*Thandeka got tired of being undermined by her dad and so she quit Mashaba Woman, went to join Tumisho in Cape Town and Kenneth Mashaba is furious.
I think I have said this before but I will repeat it: Seputla Sebogodi deserves an award for his performance as Kenneth Mashaba in Generations!
Now, he must just flippin stay off the tabloids!!!
