These days when you turn on the telly it's to see real incarnations of old tv stars; who used to entertanin us with their song and dance and act while we were growing up, watching our matchbox black and white tv's re dutse mo fatshe ko dining room. Those men and women grew up and dissappeared from our screens. Some continued doing great work behind the scenes while others started businesses which are now a success, and got out of the spotlight.
But throughout the years we never forgot the faces. And over the years, their children have followed in their footsteps and are now entertainers themselves. But, had it not been for mommy and/or daddy having been on tv all those years again, would these stars be the stars that they are? And what about those that had relationships or are currently in relationships with the same stars? What about those who went as far as to marry them? Have they and are they really working their butts off trying to make it in this industry of stardom? Or did they just step into those shoes and not actually make the shoes themselves? A na ba e apeile sopo e bare fepang yona kgotsa entse ele freezeng dijara tse kaofela...ba e nthsitse fela ba e futhumatsa bare fepa only to find it tastes just as good, or even better? Let's have a look.
Leleti Khumalo
dang! fast forward............................................ hawu bathong, kanti okae Leleti wa kajeko na? eish...will get to that pic later.
Even thou wa tena as Busi a ntse a abusa poor Queenie le di vein tsa gage tse okareng di tla tloga di phantsa, u have to admire this lady and what she's done with her career (althou i still think going the gene route, going on tv nje was a big
booboo.
Leleti was born in 1970 at Kwa Mashu. Growing up in the poverty of township life, she was initiated into a youth backyard dance group called Amajika mentored by Tu Nokwe.
In 1985, she auditioned for Mbongeni Ngema’s upcoming new musical, which was to became the international blockbuster “Sarafina!” Ngema wrote the lead character of Sarafina for her. Seven years after it opened, Leleti married Mbongeni.
Leleti enchanted audiences in South Africa and on Broadway, where she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress. “Sarafina!” stayed for two years on Broadway before embarking on a worldwide tour. In 1987 she received an NAACP Image Award for Best Stage Actress.
In 1991, together with Whoopi Goldberg, Khumalo starred in Darrell James Roodt’s film version of “Sarafina!” which was distributed worldwide, and became the biggest film production to be released in the African continent. Again she was nominated for the film Image Award together with Angela Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg and Janet Jackson.
She then went on to record an album and has starred in numerous plays and movies since, the most successful to date, in my opinion, being Yesterday.
But is her success because of Mbongeni or ene ele matla age le ena...or both? Since she and ex hubby went their separate ways one kind of wonders because look at her now...she's clearly not a fave in Gene with her acting skills.
BTW...Leleti grew up here and went on to live here
I wonder gore who got this house in the divorce settlement?
This is one of my favourites he he he he
ooh madame gigi otlo mpolaya if he ever sees this. hi hi hi. My gurl Somizi Mhlongo has done wonders with his career too.
Somizi Mhlongo has been in the entertainment industry for 25 years. His first stage appearance was at the age of six in Paul Rapetsoa's musical, Circumstances. After numerous TV jobs, Mhlongo joined Mbongeni Ngema's Sarafina, which performed on Broadway for two years before touring the world for another three.
After Sarafina, Mhlongo went back to TV and featured in various shows including Generations, Soul City and Justice For All. In 1991 he was asked to star in and choreograph the movie Sarafina and the film opened more doors for Mhlongo as a choreographer.
In 1998 he was the first black choreographer to stage Miss SA. In 2000 he took a break from choreography and went to Cape Town to join e.tv's Backstage. He stayed with the soap opera for a year before moving back to Jozi. Currently he is working on a recording project with Backstage star Lorcia Cooper and you can catch Mhlongo in the guise of Madame Gigi on TV's Intimate Connexionz.
Haai o yena i take my hat off to him. With or without mama Mary Twala he'd still be SOMIZI MHLONGO!
Bongani Fassie. All I can say is it's time to quit your day job and go back to school fana! U Brenda was Brenda because she WAS Brenda. shem those genes died with sis Brrrr!
Kaizer Motaung. eish, i tried and tried but couldn't find picture ya the incredible hunk Bobby...u'll have to make do with this one. I don't watch soccer but ke a morata bathong. Bobby Motaung ROCKS! ofcos i say this strictly in a sexual manner. the man is HOTTT! As for his skills in the field, i'll leave that to you to decide.
Loyiso nna wa mbora! He wouldn't be where he was if it wasn't for Zwai. Personally, I think the man has got no singing abilities. Yhoo, i'd rather listen to Arthur's songs all day than to hear his voice!
Pabi Moloi
Daughter to Nana Moloi...i'll let u decide if she's got it or not.
Magesh
The brother has got talent bathong! But lately he's not even trying. I guess that's what happens when your family's got moola.
Tokollo, son of soccer coach Screamer Tshabalala, used to be a member of Mashamplani. He then went on to form the group TKZee with Zwai and Kabelo.
"He could have a PhD by now, but he left after a year," says Kabelo. The trio made an EP called Take It Eezy in 1996.
But it wasn't a case of instant popularity, even if they did get nominated for best rap album in the 1997 FNB Sama Awards. Though they see themselves as starting the musical fusion of hip-hop, reggae, kwaito and R&B that Bongo Maffin and Skeem also do, their album wasn't well marketed, and many say it was ahead of its time. Evidently their label BMG saw the potential of the group and kept them on.
Even Arthur complemented the group's music over the years.Megastar and producer Mdu is the exception to the trend - he doesn't like the band. But then that's because of a crack they took at him with the track Masimbela. We all know the story. I wonder if htis beef is still going on???
I must say i haven't heard anything from Magesh since his debut solo album. All I've ever heard is his runins with the law. Okae?
Haai sorry bafethu but nna seke kgathetse ke go researcha le go typa. This is where I put my stop in the full. (?) hi hi hi
Which stars do you think have a leg (their own ofcos) to stand on and which ones do you think are hanging on to their mother's/father's/husband's/wife's/brother's/sister's skirt tails?
I'm out!
