@Nonny & Segololo, Renegade I dont know how you manage to stay so humble and not let your achievements turn you into egocentric maniacs who would shove it at our our faces at every chance you get and still manage to appeal to all masses at TVSA.

I was struck by this statement specifically the bold part, I think because in some or most cases when I reply I use real examples in my life to illustrate, damn the more I think about it I realise I'm guilty of using real life examples....ngiswele umgodi wokucasha

okay my excuse is I'm new here and I thought in Mzansi we have achieved a lot, secure, and we can now talk openly about anything,

please shed some light....

* when does a statement become 'boasting'

* BestAchiever mentioned  buying her second apartment, I was inspired

* when responding shall one try as much as possible  to stay anonymous for real, less mention of real life examples and keep it light and fun

orientate us freshers in blogging.....an idiots guide to blogging will do

more like...it seems mentioning real life examples such as owning a spazashop or pushing a government tender to clean shool toilets doesn't go down well with other bloggers who see it as shoving it at their faces....ang being egocentric maniacs or maybe i should ask Cnlgmother to elaborate on what she meant about the statement

Example of boasting conversations mainly is done by celebs when being interviewed in magazines or on  Tv. .....its like they are living in another world.
One will boast how much their husbands loves them, their cars, babies etc.

@Renegade...I dont know where dis statement came from either...but

I dont see why people shudnt be proud or even boast abt their achievements...we cant all be modest.  and ppl shudnt hav to hold back in fear of offending the inferior...each dog has its day....your time will come...we all at diff stages in our lives....we shud inspire & learn frm each instead of always trying to find fault.

TVSA bloggin  is made out of diff personalities & we cant all conform to one idea of thinkin or way of life....we hav diff aspirations..we are diff...for beta or worse.

Chocolate causes certain endocrine glands to secrete hormones that affect your feelings and behavior by making you happy. Therefore, it counteracts depression, in turn reducing the stress of depression. Your stress-free life helps you maintain a youthful disposition, both physically and mentally. Elaine Sherman

@Posh - Are you implying dat Best-Achiever was boasting?  I think there is really a thin line and you know what they say abt words "Meaning is not in words but in people interpreting them" - so I "Zee-Doll" might have interpreted it as an honest statement while you "Posh" interpreted it as boasting.......C thin line, very thin.

I think the article is asking if when Nonny, Renegade and crew *i maybe wrong* say they are in top level jobs at 22, are they boasting *bayaxhoma* or are they just blogging and what relevance does their jobs, cars and education levels have in TVSA.

The cnglemama statement is used to seek clarification that are they boasting to bloggers who at 22 were not top ranked and at 23 afford two apartments, have great men in their lives or got educated in Model C schools.

Don’t shoot me but it’s just the way I see it. It happens with many friends within the black community that when I may tell my friend about something at work or a promotion its like I am boasting how better I am or what ever

hi hi hi Vuts.......you crazy for bringin chocolates at such a tension filled blogging moment......ok lemme munch some chocolates, while I respond

ok posh...the way i see it.....sometimes people are a bit too revelaing, but if doenst do you any harm to reveal too much about your achivements/failures, so what go'head and "boast or comment"  it might irk some but it will definately insipre some to do better...and those who will be annoyed ussually are the most insecure due to their lack of achievements.....but also don forget that sometimes TVSA bloggers will say sungthin just to tease and for the fun of it....(check BA'z 2010 story..LOL)...so you shud know when to be the too sensitive blogger or when to be light-hearted and ignore some comments........BUT I dont think we shud censor our comments...(and boasts..)......BTW.....I've just ordered the new  2008 Mercedes-Benz B-Class, which shud arrive around June becasue I've been told the Jepp that I'm driving just doesnt suite me...so yeah.....take that boasting or commenting...whateva......LOL

Poshspice I am glad that my bold statement inspired you to create a blog and emphasis on “Cnglemother” nogal, the copy and paste saga from the other week is on me today. I am no by any means opposed to criticism as I cannot always be right. What boggles me is that you even found a perfect statement to make comparison with to get the message across. Unfortunately I don’t have the manual for blogging and I can’t recall any of you replies to rule out if you were boasting or not.

Boasting to my understanding in this sense would involve unnecessary and exaggerated exhibition on of one’s self importance amongst others the need to feel superior and recognized. I am not saying mense should not be proud of their hard earned accomplishments and not feel the need to share them with the world but the manner may be sometimes undesirable. Poshspice I think you mature enough to spot the difference between boasting and normal conversation.

personally i thing is the PHD syndrome, especially with black women. Why cant one be happy when another sister is blessed? as long as she's not taking anything from me then i'd say go ahead and boast or whatever. We seem to forget one thing; i.e. when someone is blessed, that on itself is a blessing to me...cause you'll never know when that person will help you one day because of their blessings. Succesful people inspire me to push harder..and i wont be able to know that unless they mention it. SO to y'all succesful bloggers out there FLAUNT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@spopo...can i borrow your Jeep when you get your merc? i need to give it to my gardner...you know moos my garden is soo big...not to mention my mansion....LOL...enjoy the chocolates love

normally when one feels like they underachieved they will have problem who talks about their evryday life.it depend who you are and how you were raised but you will know when one is boasting or not..the tone one set and frame of reference of the receiver contribute to how one receives or decodes the info from the sender.Other who cares ?

Renegade
20 Mar 2008 01:20

Interesting...but somehow I dont remember saying anything about my job and the level I'm at...so I guess it must have been in passing.

To comment generally, I'll start by citing an example. I have a friend who doesn't have a qualification, and one day we were watching "Friend's like these", and one of the guys was talking about how he's a pharmacist and another one some sort of graduate. My friend went on to talk about how we don't need to know what they do, and how she doesn't understand why some people like to rub it in other people's faces. All this time, I saw nothing wrong with what those guys had said.
My point here is that, when someone says something about their achievements, boasting or not, people that take offence(according to me), are people who have issues, people who are not confident in their achievements and are easily made to feel inferior by the achievement of others.

Here on TVSA, we dont know each other, and when someone mentions age and what they do, its usually in reply to a question. However, if someone wants to boast, why not?

P.S. Achievements are not only academic or on the work front. Should anyone say something, congratulate them, thats all.

azHOT
20 Mar 2008 01:21

pehaps we should let this one slide. i foresee some unhappiness..............

felfel
20 Mar 2008 01:21

Does this not depend on the context of the article, obviously if my reply to an article begs me to mention a few of my own achievements for emphasis or clarity's sake then i shall do that. Achievements are not the same and they cannot be measured alike. What is an achievement to someone may mean absolutely nothing to me. We all adults here, surely we can tell when someone is boasting and NOT, well, if it makes them feel good then let them boast their hearts out. Nawe, if you wana boast then do so otherwise just absorb other people's .

I don't think we're at a level here where all we can talk about is Chomee's dress and such umgosi only. People do talk about themselves a lot here, i've never really interpreted it as boasting. @BA:  Well, for me there is confidence and their is boasting. What I might consider as confidence, someone else might see as boasting.  But really, who cares?

The ever activist in me just love to read about young women who accomplish a lot,... so if someone else sees it as boasting, just please boast away....  you can only inspire someone else.

Same to you posh,....  if you are acomplished,... then obviously you worked hard to achieve it.  You earned the right to be proud of it,...  and I for one would love to hear how you achieved, what you achieved, etc....

Many of you know that I am managing a children's rights organization and unfortunately the children in our small town do not have a lot of black role models. I make it my business to bring young accomplished black young women and men to smalltown for the children during festivities.

And I sometimes would hear that someone said something to the effect that so-and-so-- are so arrogant, blah, blah,...  Then I would think that maybe I live on another planet because that same person that someone else thought of arrogant and whatever, I admired that person for having achieved that much in such a short amount of time.  And the children usually share my sentiments.

What I am trying to say, to all you fabulous accomplished young TVSA men and women, boast away.  I am listening and I am admiring....

the comment quoted there came from my blog yesterday. it's not to say BA or anyone else mentioned there is boasting, if you'll just read what posh has to say.

ofcourse we have people who boast here on tvsa, just like we have people who boast in our lives. but why waste your time with such trivialties when we've got more important things to do. i can but would rather not, name a few that i think have highly exaggerated their successes (so obvious!) and in some instances i doubt there's been any success to boast about in the first place!

posh baby, don't stress yourself ka ntho tse nnyane. this is a playground. make friends if you can but don't read too much into what/how people say what they say. abanye abantu have issues which they must deal with themselves so don't feel as if you're on the outside looking in capiche!

We have here in TVSA achieved something in our lives no matter how insignificant it maybe. Why not celebrate that, why not embrace what we have and stop moaning. There are many young children out there even amongst us who get encouraged by those so called “boasters”.

I for one have been inspired by bloggers Gucci, Best-Achiever and WSG. If someone thinks I am brown-nosing go hang yourself. If you are young, black and successful, you can even scream it from the top of table-mountain, if a child hears you and gets inspired then good for you.

Come on people, what happened to fun and laughter. BOAST UNTIL THE SUN COMES OUT. IT’S YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS IT’S YOUR RIGHT.

Can someone go OFF-Topic PLEASE!!!!

it's because these people have NEVER boasted about what they've accomplished. there are other "accomplished" people here who boast but are not on that list of yours...why is that so? because no one takes them serious!

@ Kele………first you need to ask how those people inspire me and why the “other” people you are referring to do not inspire me. Self confidence and never-die attitude is what inspires me in those bloggers. Its not what they have achieved but how they achieved it and how they continue making it count in their lives.

You have been here in TVSA longer than I have been and have read consistently what “they” have written and maybe I may have missed the “other” people. Who knows if you can direct me to their replies or articles I can get inspired. That list is not cast in stone and it maybe that I may have misjudged them. Those bloggers just came from the top of my head. I am sorry if I offended anyone, certainly not my intention but we all have different perceptions which may not hold water to other people.

@ Vutmi… you definitely know what I meant.

Goodbye peeps. see you in 2010

poshy i will try to answer your questions with reference to my life and how i deal

please shed some light....

* when does a statement become 'boasting' -
a statement becomes boastful when the listener or the reader judges it to be so. its not so much what you say as who you say it to, i mean i can boast to my friends coz they are my friends and should know how to deal with me. i can tell TVSA -ans about my achievements because I CAN and should they feel i am boasting then we will blog about it.
this is a long reply because really there are no rules to conversations if u dont wanna be seen as boasting then just stay in your shell and let others converse. or know who you should talk to and what the content of your conversation will be

* BestAchiever mentioned buying her second apartment, I was inspired
and rightfully so we hear and live with so much negetivity that a positive success story is a rare fiND. YOU GO ba

* when responding shall one try as much as possible to stay anonymous for real, less mention of real life examples and keep it light and fun
As much as we like having fun fun fun sometimes we have to be serious even if its just a lil bit but still that remains your choice

orientate us freshers in blogging.....an idiots guide to blogging will do

am not much of a blogger myself but ill orientate you anyhu, when blogging speak your mind but be careful you might step on toes but from what i gather aound here is peple get over issues neh so yah poshy pooh thats all from me

@KFab - there are other "accomplished" people here who boast but are not on that list of yours...why is that so? because no one takes them serious!

I am the one who compiled that list and the blogs originates from that, I was not under any obligation to list everyone accomplished on TVSA, was only mentioning what had inspired me and only me. The others that were not listed may have not stood out for me and I dont see anything wrong with that. There are bloggers who somehow felt my point and dont want go the list route in case i get penalised again.

My question is why does it matter if the person boasts or not? You listening or reading need to make a choice whether you let that person inspire you or you get jealous, its simple like that.

To all those who have achived, no need to apologize for your success and no need to hold back if you want to share, go ahead some of us are inspired and never want to lose the eye on the ball.

@Posh, I think they joys of not using your real name and your info is confidential here is that you can be however you choose to be.

My 2cents worth.

1. Telling other people about your achievements is a good thing (although it depends on the maturity of the receiving audience - other people can be inspired by it and others can find it quite irritating). If you are going to tell them about it, don't just expect everyone to give you a pat on your back - expect those who'll give you ish as well. And I think this is a human thing - not just abantu abamnyama.

2. How people will read what you telling them (as an inspiration or a bore) depends highly on the tone in which you say it and the circumstances under which you say it. So when you are going to tell them - watch your tone and your motive.

3. I doubt Posh wanted to fight with everyone with this blog and I understand exactloy where she comes from...she wants clarity and I think to avoid stepping into people's toes in future.

4. Most people in this forum are quite personal about things. You say one thing and the whole forum comes down on you. And I wonder - when did this become sooo personal. The way I understand internet chat/blog its a very impersonal way to have fun....You can create a whole different persona and no one has the right to tell you you are not who you really are. Its not a real platform so it would be nice if everyone can understand that.
Hence most of us are not using our real names - we have Alias. Now wherether your alias is informed by some truth - but fact it its not who you really are...So if one decides to create a fictional job for themselves just to continue with the conversation - why do we care?

LOL....For some people , in just in their nature to be boasting. Maybe they derive their self esteem from that. Some have beauty , brains, wealth, but you  will never even a single day here them talking about this and that of mine.
