The powers that be.

Let me start off by stating what I believe.

I believe in a greater power. I believe that this greater power is God. I believe that this God is the ruler of all things. I believe that God has a plan for all of us, but it is up to us to realise this plan, with help from Him.
It is this belief of mine that sometimes leaves me dumbfounded at the things I see happen in the world around me.

When I speak of a greater power, I am aware that some might view this greater power in a different way, that’s one of the things that make us different as humans.
The purpose of this article, is to get a feel about what bloggers think about these powers, and I am truly hoping for serious responses, (lately we’ve been talking about the fun element of TVSA, so I just thought I should mention that.)

I will map out 3 personal scenarios for you, scenarios which have made me wonder.

Scenario 1

The story: A dear friend of mine had been having trouble landing a permanent job. She had however managed to buy a car using her dad’s name. She was very worried about her job, her relationship with her fiance which was under serious strain and her life in general. Her aunt took her to a prophet, who told her that someone was out to get her. Someone wanted her dead, and this would happen via an accident, maybe not her car, but an accident in a car. He also told her that this person was the reason for her strained relationship with her fiancé. Furthermore, her prospects of getting a proper job would remain dim unless a “ceremony” was performed by her parents on her behalf.

The outcome: Some of you might remember an article I wrote about a friend of mine who had been in a near fatal accident. This was a few weeks after she had been warned about the accident. Fine. The relationship? I cant really say much about that, I think she pretends all is well.
The job? Still nothing, her parents still haven’t performed the ceremony
.

My thinking: I’ll start with the job. Being the believer that we play a big part in the way our lives turn out, I honestly think that this is in her hands. My friend is very close to finishing her diploma, but she has put it on hold for certain reasons, so right now, her highest qualification is Matric. So obviously, without a proper qualification, it doesn’t take a prophet to realise that your job prospects are limited, unless you do something for yourself.
The accident? I must admit, this had me a little freaked out, ok, very freaked out. You see, my belief tells me that the highest power is God, that no human can hold the fate of another human in their hands. I strongly believe that. Perhaps we are not dealing with humans here, surely? So on this matter, I have to say, I am not clear. As far as the accident is concerned, I think God intervened, He is great, and what He wants to happen, will happen. I will rest at that.
The relationship – no diagnosis.

Scenario 2

Story: Ok, this one involves me. It also involves a prophecy(don’t ask, I seem to be surrounded by these things). Ok, an uncle of mine informed my grandmother that a prophet had told him that someone wants to “take” my car, and unless it was “fasad” (hmm, fasad refers to the strengthening of a car so it becomes immune to theft, accidents, hijacking etc), it would be gone. Fine. I was told this, and naturally, was scared somewhat. Going out at night was no longer the same.
I decided it wouldn’t hurt to have my car “fasad”, and so I did. By the way, this resulted in a hole in the carpet, but I wont go into it as I’m still not over this, and speaking about it will bring me to tears.

Outcome: So my car’s deemed safe. My friend and I decide to do Sandton City during the day. On our way back, while waiting at a red traffic light, I hear the car behind me hooting. We then realise that some guy was trying to open the door on the passenger side, but fortunately the doors were locked. Hmmm.

My thinking: Ok, so maybe open the passenger side of the door wouldn’t have resulted in a hijacking, or maybe it would have. I don’t know. Fact of the matter is that we were in a potentially dangerous situation, and had had the sense to lock the doors before it happened. So was this because the car was fasad? Or was it because my God was looking out for me. Perhaps the two work hand in hand? Maybe my car being fasad was God’s way of protecting me? Maybe. Maybe not.

Scenario 3:

Story
: Those of you who watch Soweto TV will know of a “psychic” on the channel, her name escapes me right now. Two of my friends were presented with the opportunity to go on the show, and have their questions answered. They did so, asking questions ranging from the prospects of job promotions, to marriage and children.

Outcome: Since their questions were based on the future, I can’t speak much about the outcome, maybe in a later dated article.

My thinking: Well, were do I start? Pyschics, fortune tellers, call them what you will, its another form of prophecy isn’t it? Perhaps even a “white” form of prophecy. How does one begin to explain how they can see into my future?

Ok, so those are my stories, they’ve led me to wonder. However, I am not moved in my belief that God is the highest power, and believing in him, allows you to remain immune to any evil that may be directed your way. Perhaps I am naïve, but it is truly what I believe.

Fellow bloggers, lets share? Do you guys believe anyone has the power to direct another humans life in a certain way. Do you believe in prophecies?
What have been your experiences?

the prophecies/fortune tellers/nyangaz. actually ruined my family and turned my mother into something i woldnt want to discuss....until she died two years ago.......its very confusing and stressing cause you dont know what to believe, yet you want to "embrace" your culture and stil be ope-nminded about things...

I'll think about my examples and "indulge" you...LOL.

i dont necessarily believe that one can predict my future for me. I do believe however that if i have a situation and share it with some1 out of teh "situation", they can help me look at it from a different perspective and thereby see other things that I couldnt see, simple because i am in the situatio. I may also want 2 mention that I am blessed with the power of dreams. if something is about 2 happen, i see it in my dreams, but at times its not as clear as it should be. I suffer a lot from De Javu, coz when an accident happens, 2 me its like I see it for the second time, probably because I have dremat it. Its scary I promise u, coz i'd tell a friend that I dreamt so and so was dead, and 3 days later so and so's brother dies, so how do u explain that.

Thank you Rene for this!!!!

I have 2 stories to share:

Story 1:

I fell pregnant with my first child in 2002, went to see a prophet very early in the pregnancy. Announced the pregnancy to just about everyone within earshot and my partner told his family as well. This prophet (who has since passed on) lived in D/K and she worked through the bible. You go in, randomly open the bible and place R20 wherever the page is open and then give her the bible. She told me i was pregnant (i wasn't showing then), was carrying a boy and that my baby needed a lot of prayer. That was it. We left, she gave me a bottle of water to drink and ash (i live with the addiction to this day) to consume.

Outcome:

At 6 months, went for the 3D scan and guess what? I had no amniotic fluid, my baby was in a breech position, i had placenta preavia (sp) and the baby had a blockage in his/her bladder (@ the time we couldn't see the sex of the baby). Was told that as soon as i was 7 months into the pregnancy, i would have a c-section as the baby would not live to "term". Anyway, turned out  the baby was a boy and his organs were undeveloped and he passed on.

My thinking:

The prophet was spot on in her diagnosis and i don't know if there's anything i could have done to change His will.

Story 2:

Fell pregnant in 2005, told no one about it, went to see an inyanga and had a string around my belly for protection (the green one LOL). Confirmed the pregnancy when it was no longer possible to hide it through "breathing in" and still insisted that my partner tells no one on his side of the family (loong story). Drank herbs to protect the baby until a week before i was due to deliver.

Outcome:
My baby lives.

My thinking:----------------------, ----------------------, ------------------!

Story 3 : unresolved

Around the same time i fell pregnant, i started sensing something other than the baby move inside my body. That thing-whatever it is- is still moving in my body and i think i've developed some condition where the abnormal become normal after too much exposure (can't recall what it's called, but it exists). I don't want to believe it's witchcraft but i cannot NOT believe it isn't-get what i mean? It's not painful but there was a time when i was so fatigued that getting out of bed was a mission. It was uncomfortable to climb stairs and i thought i might be developing athritis. Read "The Power of a Praying Woman" and everything changed-the tiredness and discomfort in my legs disappeared but the thing still moves.

I believe that God as part of the trinity (God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit) to be the only Way, Truth and Life...

I believe in Easter, that Jesus died for me and because of Gods love for me. I believe in the power of the cross. I firmly believe that there is a heaven and hell...and that the only way to make it to heaven is by accepting Jesus as your saviour. Like it is said - we are all born into sin. But by allowing Jesus into your life - he forgives your pardons and through a relationship with God - you will go into heaven.
That's what I belive - and that belief has worked for me so far...

I'm a 'prophet-nyana' myself.I have these 'revelations' and when they happen I'm like WTF?One of my friend also has these 'revelations' and we tell only each other coz we have the same 'thing'.I believe in GOD and would never go to a sangoma. There have been instances where things have been said that have happened in my life that made me think...
MY STORY
My dad is a popular guy in our neighbourhood,so this one time after I had bought my second car, this traditional healer guy says to my dad (ko tropong) "Have any of your child's cars been fasad(thanx Rene)? And my dad goes,no,we dont fasa our cars,GOD is there to protect us always. And this guy tells my dad, well, the people in your area are very unhappy with the fact that your daughter is so young and she has bought a second car without selling the first, and your child is gonna have an accident with two guys in the car,and my dad said, well there is nothing we can do if GOD blesses us,we can only hope that those people's children receive the blessings.
When my dad got home,he tells us the story and I'm like WTF,I've already had that 'accident'.Its just that I managed to control the car before I could 'land' into the boer farms. And my parents were shocked to say the least. They asked me why I never told them, and I said I didnt get hurt mos.

So ja thats my story.

@Spopo - I patiently await the indulgence.

@Toxic - Hectic. This is exactly what I'm talking about. I'm sorry to hear about your first baby. This is the reason that our elders always tell us to keep these things secret, because people seem to wish other people ill all the time. The thing here that baffles me is: you fell pregnant and lost the baby. My belief forces me to assume that it wasn't time for you to have it, that God didn't want you to have it right then. But dare I consider the fact that other powers in play had to do with your baby not making it? That would mean that these powers are more powerful, and that is something I am not prepared to believe...I refuse!

As for the thing that's moving, eish Toxic, I dont even know what to say. What have you done about it? Have you gone to a western doctor(u'd probably have a hard time trying to explain what the problem is), or a traditional one. If so, what have they said.

@andi01 - Wow, thats both cool and scary. I'm not sure I'd wanna know when someone's gonna die, but at the same time, it would be nice to know some other things before they happen.

@Lex - I guess you are somewhat like andi01. Someone once told me that we are all blessed with an ability to see the future, its just stronger in others. And it all depends on whether you are open to the possibility of being able to see such.

Gotta share this,  my older sista has been married to her first love for over ten years now. She's always been sickly couldn't even finish school cos every time it was exams, she'd go completely blind, teachers would fone our mum at work to come get her cos she couldn't see her way home. She started wearing very thick glasses (only at exam time), but the whole thing got to her mentally so much that she just quit. She got fed up with inyangas and dedicated herself to church (ivangeli), that's where she met her husband. On that night it was umlaliso (all night church) at church and she just collapsed and he was one of the plp who helped her up. Anyway, they got married and started trying to fall pregnant, nothing happened for a while, went to see an inyanga was told that she'd never ever have kids. The inyanga would do something called 'ukuqubula' where she'd bite into her stomach and pull out hairs and needles and other funny stuff and say that's what is stopping her from falling perggies (and her mother inlaw was involved). Went to Doctors, was told the same thing, decided to quit inyangaand Doctors and went back to church. She got four kids now, two boys and twin girls, tied her tubes last year. Her kids have no illnessess, even the two year old twins.

She prays everyday, and considers every good that has happened to her as blessings from God. She and her husband don't have much but they support each other and her two boys are at good model C schools through government bursaries in CT.

To share some of my experiences:

Case no 1: In 1997, my father was very ill, and I was leaving with my grand pa, one night I dreamt that he had died and that there were 2 taxis comimg from CT, the first (white one), with the trailer and his coffin, the second one (brown), following with family members. i told my grandpa and he said, it is a good sign. Whne some1 is ill if u dream dat he is dead, dat means he'll leave. amonth later my father died and his funeral was as I had seen it in my dreams.

Case 2: Last year March I had a dream that a friend of mine was coming towards me crying, but i dint know why, then i woke up.@ around 3;15 am, i wanned 2 go c if she was OK, but was scared 2 go all by mself. De next mornig I had that she got raped the previous nite. 2 days later I went 2 see her & she told me dat de guy dat raped her arrived just before 3 am and he grabbed her out of her b.f's house for nearly 20 minutes and raped her. ???????.

Case 3; The latest, i dreamt that there was a funeral, and one of my family memebrs had died, and when i asked (in my dream), whos funeral are we suppose 2 attend and some1 said mine. So I woke up. 3 says later my cousin brother passed away  (on the 8th of March 2008). The coincidence my name is Andiswa and his name is Andile (hence i dreamt that the funeral is mine).

This is very perculiar, but i thank the lord for giving this blessing, i dont need to consult a sangoma, i just need 2 pray. if something is about to happen I dream it and feel it and ask the lord 2 protect me. If some1 close 2 me is pregnant I the loser I m dating is cheating, i dream in my dreams, i wake up nauseas, and vomit it all out. One of my ex-friends was told me that. "we have been trying 2 poison u for such a long time but u wake up and throw it all up", we will make a plan. And i told her as long as the person who brought me to this world, still wants me in this world, none can take me away, just relax, u never created me, and you sure will never take me away, and thats a promise

I have never been to a prophet/sangoma and the like.  I ONLY believe in God, Jesus Christ and the Holy spirit.  I do not believe in people who have supernatural powers for they are led by the evil spirits, that's why they "seem" to know what's going to happen to you or your family.

Toxic my sister used to have something like that too in her stomach before giving birth to her twins. She thought she was preggies but wasn't. Even thought it mite be idliso. It was bad for her cos sometimes she'd feel like she's loosing her breath, it got to the point where it limited her visits to the loo (not constipation), she literary couldn't pee and her bladder would be in pain cos she needed to go but nothing was coming out. I don't know what healed her (if she is) but when she gave birth we thought something would come out or the babies would be sick but she had no problems at all, except that the babies were born prematurely cos they were in breech position and they came out the natural way not even ceasarian which was insisted upon by the Dr.'s, she even took a break in-between popping them babies....LOL...

God exists all the way, however sometimes in order for us to appreciate God's power and love for we expect to go through certain negatives and difficulties in our lives first then we pray to him when it's too late.
Witchcraft exists also but i don't think it's more powerful than God, its just a distraction to God's work just like there is hell which is a distracting path to the way to heaven.
I believe in God very much and am in awe of the way he loves me and all he has done and continues to do for me plus i am patient  and believe that more is yet to come. I cannot deny that witchcraft does not exist, i'm very realistic, i have personnally seen enough and i don't think any God who loves you would deliberately cast such hardships and pain on his own just so they realise who he is. There's an evil distraction out there and it comes in all forms and shapes. One thing i like about evil is that it brings me even closer to God, and that's the one benefit of evil, it paves an even clearer path to God.

andi01
25 Mar 2008 03:42

@Toxic, i agree with you witchcraft does exist, it is created by the the evil to hurt us, but we all know how stupid the devil is, coz hardships do bring us closer 2 our Lord, but those who dont believe in Gaad and have little faith unfortunately they do fall in the devils trap.however whichcraft is not as powerful as god's power, nothing is.

Witchcraft is there but if yu are a born again christian (born-again being the operative word) then we know that if cannot affect us any in way for the Bible says in Luke 10:19 that God has given us power to trample all over serpents and scorpions, all over the evil in the world and nothing shall by any means harm us.

@Toxic,

i grew up thinking i had worms inside me took every medication there is in the world and still nothing but i could still feel them move until late 90's when a prophet just showed up at my grand's place(long story) but hey, he helped me and my family believe me those things normal people cant see them cause its just evil spirit in a form of something.

my thot is, if this guy from Potch cant see them he probably doesnt know what he's talking about o thatha ma chance find someone that can see them. i believe God works in mysterious ways as much as the western doctors are blessed with the knowdlege the prophetes and traditional healers are also blessed.

I believe GOD works through each and everyone of us, when you smile, help or comfort someone that is God working through you, other people believe in evil spirit that whatever they ask from it, it answers.....

Ok, Mathaz, Andi01, Suzzy82, I agree with all of you guys. The God we serve is great. None is mightier. I cannot be shaken in that belief. My issue though is:
Those ppl who have what seems to be a power to control the lives of others...how do they get that power. Because someone as human as me cannot posses such a power, hence my saying that it is not human. Yes, it is evil, the devil some may say. So then my conclusion from all this is that the devil will select vulnerable humans to carry out his evil work?

I do believe in God  and i know nothing beats the power of prayer.  But in the same breath these inexplicable supernatural things like izangoma or prophets are not to be ignored as well. I think the war between good & evil has been in existence since the beginning of time.  I also think God speaks to poeple in different ways - some people can forsee the future and some can heal people with their hands.  I dont think they can do this on their own.  I think God moves through them.

Witchcraft exists and all sorts of evil but you know what they say "When evil comes knocking ask God to answer the door for you."

Very interesting article Renegade, nna i grew up in a very religious family and was raised with the belief that witchcraft does not exist.I grew up hearing all these stories about boloi, people using bread to fly around, talking snakes, somebody getting struck by lightning and all those, and in my home we were raised to believe that these things do not happen and people just make them up,Now my in laws belive in both christianity and these african things. Its very scary for me,I remember a couple of years ago they had somebody to come and "check out" the house for any funny business, mind you a couple of month prior to this my MIL had given me some funny stuff to give to my son,I threw the things out cos I honestly did not believe in these things.

Now this person who was checking out the house suddenly pointed at my son and announced that there was something wrong with him,I did not take him seriously...and then he looked at me and asked me why I haven't been giving the child his medicine,I said to him that I have been giving the medicine and that it was finished. He looked at his bones and then said that the last person to give the med. was the nanny.I thought to myself,BUSTED!!!!!!!!! I was so afraid,he then did some ritual for my son to "heal and protect" him from evil spirits. He then told my in laws that someone from my family was "loying" my son and that caused a lot of problems,my son was taken away from me for a long time and things got really ugly.Thank goodness now everything is fine,my son is back with me and hubby,he is doing fine.I honestly don't know how he knew gore ga ka mofa ditlhare, and to tell the truth,he planted a seed of doubt in my mind, but nna tumelo ya me,ke thebe ya me.

But then the Devil came and poisoned some of them, he comes to these people and promise them heaven and earth, money, long life and that they'll be the best, richest and most known phophets if they follow him, but they should use Gaad's name to cover their evil acts. i beleiev that greed and envy can lead an honest and faithful soul to hell.Sometimes the Laard puts us through trials (like he did Jesus), so that he can see if we can survive and test our faith. thats when the Devil comes in when we are at misery and promise us everything we want 2 hear, those of little faith fall for his trap, and he begins using them. You see the devil doesnt have gratitude, the more u work for him, the harder ur job becomes. He has no heart, not at all, he uses one to kill other people and at the end he he uses the same person to kill his own family and at the end kills you. He quotes the Laards words and use them in his evil ways (for he knows the bible very well, lucifer was once God' s child). i.e when he says do unto others what u would like done 2 u, he means hurt other people and teh same will be done to you.

sori had to disappear

hear it goes

My dad had gone to visit my grandmother in the Easter cape, so along came this prophet and he told my dad there's a snake in his engine and if he doesnt pray  for it my dad will make up in an accident luckly my dad believes in such things so he let him pray for the snake

all he asked for was tap water in a buscket or "waskom" which ever one and he started praying and praying (when he prays then only the snake becomes visible because then it weakens).
@Toxic
to be honest with you, he prayed and prayed and pulled the minora out of me, only then we could see it and then prayed again to send it back to the person who bewitched me and we just saw it disappear into thin air.

if the person is dead then only him can burn whatever they put in you, we were not allowed to touch it after wards.

and yes it is creepy but only if you allow it to be - the guy whose's whole family died is leaving with his relatives.

i heard years later that the prophet passed on

i have seen it happen, and no one is going to try to convince me otherwise even the born again christians, i believe in God and i also know there is evil spirit out there.

As I said before I believe  in God 101 % but I also believe that witchcraft does exist

When I was doing my matric I got sick round about exam time.  I was throwing up and I felt like something was moving from my stomach to my throat.  First my parents thought I was pregnant and they took me for a check up.  The doctor confirmed that I was not preggers and that I was still a virgin.  I was admitted at Union hospital in Alberton because doctors thought I had ulcers.  After checking me they told my parents that there is no sign of an ulcer and they can really tell what was wrong with me.  I was discharged from hospital and I was taken to venda to see one old granny there. I don't really remember what she did but I got better and I stayed in venda a few day but as soon as I went back home to Chiawelo I was worse.  Around that time my little brother also fell sick.  He was an 8 years old at that time.  He started loosing his mind and he was also taken to hospital and the doctors said they don't see anything wrong with him.  He stayed in hospital for a few days and he was better  but as soon as he came back home he became sick again.  so my parents were now nursing two sick children.

One day when we where coming back from church my youngest brother who was 2 at the time was ran over by my dads car while my dad was parking the car in the driveway.  Till today we dont know how he survived because the car actually went over his head.  but only half his ear was torn and they had to stich it back.

After that incident my parents started to go everywhere and anywhere they were advised to go until they came across a man who was a healer in zuurbekom.  He told them that someone put  a something in at the gate of our house that why we get sick when we get  home.  He came and herperformed a ceremony and he dug up 2 tortoise shells that we planted at the gate.  After that my parents sold our house and we move to Alberton

ALL THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE MY FATHER GOT A PROMOTION AT WORK FROM HEAD OF DEPARTMENT TO SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AND SOMEONE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH IT

Heeiii you people are talking about some creepy stuff.

Nna I believe in the Almighty, All Powerful. He is the one who created all things and He controls all existence from the palm of His hand. I do not deny the existence of witchcraft or that of any evil spells, but i do not believe in them. Whatever you believe in, you make it your god. And God is a jealous God.

He can let you go through all sorts of things until you realise that he's the only God and you give him all the Glory that belongs to Him.

Nna i beleive in the God that answers by fire. Amen!

interesting Rene:

here is my story:
Let me first say that i am a Born-Again child of God, chosen and set-apart

well in year 2003 ... i was on my way to JHB from home, was sitting next to some gal in the tax, we were chatting about this and that and suddenly when we few minutes from the rank ... i started seeing and hearing this lady darker and faraway, i tried to spaek but woords could come out of my mouth ...  the tax stopped and the lady asked me to get off so she can get off i tried but i coldnt, then i heards someone from the back saying im ill, i nodded my head in disagreement i get of and took few steps towards the other tax that i was suppose to take but it got darker and darker then i fall on the road, i heard the instant stop of the tax(i still thank God for saving me there), then rush to me (i assume) and took me to a safer spot ... i was busy saying everything that was happening(calling the names of ppl i was seeing, what they were saying and what they were doing), someone from the crowd took a peb and a paper wrote every word i said. When one of the ppl i was seeing tried to beat me with something i could see what it was i saw a hand stretching towards me, i tried to stretch mine too and the hands came together and that person pulled me out of that situation(i believe it to be Jesus' hand).

Days later somebody(we dont know even today) came to mum and told her that herdoctor who nearly died musnt come home because if she dies she will die(i was with my father, where he works at that time), when i was told that i was so scared, i stayed without going home until 2005 december(that was 3 years later).

i was living in fear for 3 years, fear controlled me for 3 years i couldnt see any of my family members except my dad for 3 years because we were told who ever gonna see me will die with me, i cried day and night with no help. i went to work in CT late 2004, then late 2005 when i was reading the bible, i read a scripture where jesus was telling His disciples that he is giving them the authority above all principalities of the world, i heard an a small voice saying to me, this scripture is actual talking to you, Go home this year and see if God will not protect you. i took my phone told mum and dad that im coming home these holidays and we gonna have a thanks-giving, they were worried i told them what the voice said to me and mum said "May His Will be done, some home sisi we missed you". i went home that december and absolutely nothing happened to me. a day just before i was supposed to leave home for work one of my uncles wife and my beloved and best friend cousin came home and talk to me, mum and dad and told us they are the ones who were behind all of this, they told us that there is something at the gate that was gonne kill me if i take a step to my home ground, they took us there and take that small bottle out, they told us that they were suprised to see mehome bcos that wasnt suppose to happen and the told us that after seeig me they came at night to do their magic but all they could see was the fire surrounding my home so they couldnt get closer and in the morning they heard voices that said to them they must come confess if they dont wanna die and go to hell

we all cried ... but what i learnt from all of this i that the devis do use people for his evil mission but he will never succed. and that fear actual controls us ... from that day on i knew that nobody can do anything or has power over my being except God.

So bloggers, devil was once a good angel of God, he became jelous of God and wanted to do everything that God was doing and thus God descended him to earth where he is trying to do what God can do but in an eveil way, some people do give to devils trap some dont But we all have power over Him

sorry for a long reply
