5 Reasons Why You Need To Chill

Written by TVSA Team from the blog 5 Reasons on 17 May 2008

It was exactly 9 months ago I wrote this article. 9 Months later something's been borne here. The site has given birth to some activities which are too unbecoming of people who call themselves young professional adults. Something which I don't like. Something I know alot of people don't like. Something I'm finding very hard to name as all the names I can think of are so not very nice. Simply put; there's too much of lenyatso (someone please provide another version...Zulu/English?) on this site. And THIS blog is where we'll all address it.

This blog is not for me or anyone else to hate on anyone/anything else. It is not about pointing the finger, it's not a playground for those that are too bored with their work/lives; cause we all know misery loves company. Like I said, it's issues that need to be addressed and address them we will. After all, I am an intelligent young woman and will give everyone the benefit of the doubt and say we are all young intelligent people who can converse in a mutually beneficial manner. These are 5 Reasons Why some of y'all needs to take a step back and reassess some of your attitudes:

1. Language

Freedom of expression in a language of your choice is a beautiful thing. But it becomes unbearable and discomforting when it is used in a manner whereby some of the other people who were in on the conversation are being left to fend for themselves. We all can't possibly speak the same language. What's wrong with a little courtesy of expressing yourself in a manner everyone will understand? This creates a sense of isolation...as if you (the one that doesn't understand the language) are not wanted. Sometimes even in your own blog. I find it highly disrespectful. If you can read and write all 11 official languages GOOD FOR YOU! But not everyone's like you, we are all unique individuals. An eyesore nhe? Too much of a hard time reading that? Now do you get what I mean? Good. Now go back, highlight the paragraph and read again.

2. Cliques

This site is a wonderful platform to form friends and networks. I myself have met and have befriended alot of people from this site. It's a beautiful thing. However, you and your clique really shouldn't feel the need to dominate a blog and think you're the IT of TVSA. Quite simply put there are people here aba delelayo. They are rude and immature. Again, there is no need to always be on the defensive. And hiding behind the face of anonymity is so juvenile. We are all adults here and are not here to mother/father anyone. And no one has a mother/daddy here...unless I missed something. So please behave in a manner that's appropriate for someone your age and with your level of integrity. That is, if you have any.

3.  The constant bickering

This more or less goes with point no2. As I said, there's nothing wrong with having your own set of friends but bickering and getting all your "mates" to back you up and join in on the fight is just so not right. Like I said we are all adults. Name calling is a big issue. Unless it's said in an affectionate way let's all not put people against a wall please. I could think of so many horrible names to name some people here but I CHOOSE not to. Choice, the right choice, so such an attractive quality. Some things are just too beyond me. As young intelligent people, they should be beyond you too.

4. Abuse of power

Anonymity is power. No one said those of us who have managed to maintain their anonymity; should go out of their way to belittle others and hide behind their anonymity. It's wrong. I'm sure whoever raised you raised you with some manners.  I finally got some last night. Oh right! This blog is about the 5 Reasons...I'll take my offtopic topic soomewhere else...like say maybe pm or email or even a phone call. Better yet someone was bright enough to come up with the Off Topic blog. Take it there! This is home yes but please treat it with the respect and decency it deserves. Treat people's blogs like how you would want to be treated.

And finally...some common ground...

5.  Seeing eye to eye

The world wasn't meant for everyone to become happy budding pals. At the same time it does not mean people who have no liking for each other can't at all try and find some common ground. Young intelligent people know how to live and let live. And if you can't there are other ways of ignoring someone without going out of your way to snub them.

Blogging is a wonderful thing. I love this site. I am not going anywhere. Just like I know alot of people are not going anywhere. So if anyone thinks they are the shiz and will dominate and sit on the rest of us...go right ahead and try. But remember, nisi thole la, nizo si shiya la! (You found us here, you will leave us here!) And this my friend, is NOT playa hating. There's more than enough room for anyone...and more!

Spread the love y'all!

U go girl, this is so true and we all know it, I just hope all bloggers will consider the facts raised here and help make this place an enjoyable place for everyone!

I have been visitng this site everyday for over a year now, and U know what, I chose to be a silent blogger because of all those factors U mentioned above.
I like all the topics raised here and I learn so much, especially since the introduction of this gold status, but the attitudes, and comments that I have seen here has put me off from actively participating! I have seen a lot of newbees been putoff and belittled and their first attempts on writing blogs been laughed at.

Just adding to this, going off-topic on pp's websites is still a major problem here. I think is very rude.

On a positive note though, Im in love with TVSA and Im not going anywhere

Amen KFab, Amen! I applaud you for writing this article.
TVSA these days reminds me of high school,...the whole clique thing... the 'popular cliques', 'the not so popular cliques',... and 'the outsiders.' So sad, it is not even funny. Just sad..

@diamond:
'Just adding to this, going off-topic on pp's websites is still a major problem here. I think is very rude.'
I could not agree with you more

A-M-E-N.i am happy that someone has guts to address this.I don't want to sound negative but i jsut don't see this behaviour changing any time soon. There's too many groupies here.

We should just learn to agree to disagree on issues without reaping each other's haeds off!!!!!

this is the Kele i know....nice one babes.i also dont see a point of trying to get a point across by being rude...we're here to influence each others opinions and not force them down onto people ....we share ideas and mostly in a fun way that shouldn't be personal or childish

However, you and your clique really shouldn't feel the need to dominate a blog and think you're the IT of TVSA. Quite simply put there are people here aba delelayo.

I just dont understand...

Thanx. I especially agree with the point u made abt ppl using their anonymity to belittle others.. Its all a bit childish and annoying. I do enjoy the tvsa environment though even with its infantile bickering. Its kinda wat makes al the blogs that much more interesting, but iI guess it would be easy 4 me 2 say this since I've never been on the recieving end.

The thing I find to be most bothersome is the "marketing", ukumakethana, excus da vernac honestly don't know how else to describe it. Theres always an underlying meaning, which more often than not , makes fun of some1. Khona i-crew nje that makes it their daily vocation to expose others' mistakes, be they bad english, failure to make a point etc. Its nice, yes, **BOSOMS** but kumele kube neLIMIT. I think thats the most important thing LIMITING your negative, belittling and extremely childish nonsense.

Al this coming from a 19 yr old, go on giv me yr best shot

Can I also add that blogging is not about how many responses you get. Some people are only interested in the # of responses, whether they are related to the blog or not they don't care...They even go to the extent of posting blank responses...its all so childish really

Morning! When I joined here I was sure I was going to make lots and lots of friends, but later found that some people just get annoyed when you try to chat with them. It's as if some people belong to a certain circle of friends and anyone new is not allowed or welcome in that circle.Anyway....you can't force people to be friendly and considerate towards others, can you? We'll just wait and see.

Amen to everything you've said Kele, and really, no one is saying people shouldn't "have fun" but there is a limit to everything.

<<<So please behave in a manner that's appropriate for someone your age and with your level of integrity. That is, if you have any.>> 'Nuff said!

<<TVSA these days reminds me of high school>> It reminds me of my primary school, my high school days weren't like that.

<<Can I also add that blogging is not about how many responses you get>> 100% correct.

@ Joe: Huh???

18 May 2008 06:36

Oh Miss-Fab...thank you so much!!! All the bickering that goes on here is so annoying....so primary school like for people who actually work or are still in tertiary....
And the language thing...gal...you are so right!!!! And it still amazes me that people have been warned over and over again, that not all of us on the site understand all languages. But some still go out of their way to reply in their languages, knowing that other people don't understand!!!! That annoys the heck out of me...

Great article!!

I'm really sad to hear that so many issues have arisen on the site instead of  laughter. The site is !00% intended to be a place for everyone to have the best possible time - to escape from the crazy world that's so full of pressures, tensions and conflicts.

Care, positive energy and respect are put into the site every day to make it the funnest place it can be and to hear that conflicts are happening isn't cool. When we created the site it was to make it a place for absolutely everyone to have a rip - a place where the motto's "one for and all for one - through TV" LOL,  The world constantly tries to break this down - please let's not let it win!

The idea's always been for it be a place where everyone can laugh, be entertained, freak out and even fight but then to come together to shake hands afterwards.

We have no problems with members posting in different languages - just so long as it's not done to deliberately exclude people. Nothing must be done to exclude people or make anyone feel they're not welcome on the site or a conversation - the site really is for every visitor who can get to the address.

Onwards to enjoyable times for everyone pleeease!

Wow, you've hit the nail on the head. My biggest gripe is the language issue, but I normally just don't bother reading those replies. But on the whole, the points you mention are on poing. I think the problem is that people tend to get carried away, and thus eventually form what becomes a high school (or according to BS, a primary school), type of group.
Nice one Kele.

Great article KFab. I see by the number of new names that you've ousted a lot of closet bloggers which means that you've addressed an issue close to every1's hearts. Learning and information sharing is great but we miss out on this if some people are put off by the behaviour of  fellow bloggers.

I like Anonimity because you can share ideas without feeling like the time in school when you had to do your oral infront of the whole class but unfortunately some people cross the line and go out of their way to belittle others and hide behind their anonymity

Hopefully, through your article we exorcise this demon that has possessed some bloggers.

Nice one Kele. My biggest issue right now is the ganging up on some1. Its like some cliques PM each other and plan to ruin some1's article. Especially if the writer of the article is not 'famous' here. Let me refer to Bulie's article about 'Mistakes'. Yerrrr people were just childish there! All im saying not everyone can write like a journalist so if the article is not so well written then its cool to give some1 tips but not thrashing! Or just go 2 another blog if u find some's blog boring.

19 May 2008 01:10

Thank you Kele for creating this space for debate and i absolutely agree with everything you've written. It's really bad when a site like TVSA becomes intimidating to new users because of all those points you raised there.

The bickering is really childish-playground level-and most times not even necessary. Criticising new articles people feel BRAVE enough to post is so not on especially if it targets the same people/person.

Can I also add that blogging is not about how many responses you get.

Yes!!! i write because it's my passion so one response from someone that "gets" me is better than a 100 responses from people that don't.

It's wrong. I'm sure whoever raised you raised you with some manners. I finally got some last night. Oh right! This blog is about the 5 Reasons...I'll take my offtopic topic soomewhere else...like say maybe pm or email or even a phone call.

LOL!!! I so get what you mean cause that's become the trend lately!

Finally, i know that change is good and it would be a problem if this site didn't grow and we didn't get a whole "breed of creatives" but there are days when i scroll through old articles just to capture that feeling of being "home"; when the majority of people on the site LOL'd and participated in discussions/articles posted.

Thanx Kele for bringing this issue, I have resorted to staying away from responding to blogs, because I didn't have anything to say, I believe if you don't have anything to say don't say anything (I know it's a cliché) just move on to a blog that suits your needs, And also there is no need to blast some people's( especially new bloggers) creativity, this a place where we can all have fun and take time out from work , have fun and more fun

19 May 2008 01:23

Hi everyone

Forgive me Kele, but i just need to disagree with some of your comments.

1.Lenyatso
I dont know why we turn to take things so personally, the beauty of being anonymous is that you can be whoever you choose to be, if you feel someone is "nyatsing" you "nyatsa" the person back, STOP FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF!!!

2.  Language
I feel you on this one, but yet again SA has 11 official languages its about time we learn other peoples languages and what a better way of learning, this is simple if you dont want to read what's written in Zulu then dont or you can ask the person who posted a reply to translate, its as simple as that. ( by the way i'm Sotho and dont understand what they say sometimes but it doesnt bother me, i have to learn)

3.  Cliques
The problem here is that when people join TV SA they see the usual ppl posting replies e.g Nonny, Cmom, BA, Sponono etc and everyone wants to a part of that group make your own friends, how about you welcome a new blogger like Nonny always does, how about you start a conversation with someone new other than the "Clique"????

People STOP complaining, AND TAKE CHARGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recall one instance when i was(however unintentional) mean to another blogger.  I apologised but i could have cost the site a blogger as a result of my actions.

Let's be considerate of one another and distinguish between constructive criticism and just being mean. Hopefully we exorcise this blogging demon.

Porsche obviously if someone is *nyatsing you, you will nyatsa back, but there are people who just don't know when to back down and then the whole thing just turns into a mudslinging fiesta. So where exactly is the point of all this? I was under the impression that KFab is taking charge by addressing this issue with this article. It goes back to having manners. You're not going to, on another persons blog, ask "Why are you nyatsing me..."

Besides you first acknowledge there's a problem before you can solve it.

Being an almost new member of TVSA there are things that are almost obvious, there are two cliques here “the old members” and the “new members” and for some reason if you cannot fit into either you get left out in the cold.

This became obvious in the “Truworths dress article” and for new members there is an air of intimidation when you want to voice your opinion but it doesn’t bond well with either of the cliques.

The language issue, this is not only limited to the zulu/xhosa languages used in this site but extends to other languages.

Until the issue of cliques is solved the above issue will always exist.

carino
19 May 2008 02:18

I had made up my mind to thath'ikhava on this article but after Porsch's response... I feel I have to say something.

He are my five reasons I think we should chill.

1. Blogs & comments
As much as I agree that bloggers can really get too much sometimes, I've been to other blogs.. I've been part of other blogs, in Mzansi and Internationally. TVSA is the only place you'll ever find bloggers complaining about issues.
I mean, why are we complaining? A blog is a blog... and a good article is not measured by the number of replies that you receive, so why dont we just vblog away... Kanti why blog if its still gonna be about the same issues we deal with in real life? like fitting in, nursing other people's emotions and "being careful not hurt anymore"?

2. Respect
One blogger that I respect very much once said: "We all blog for diferent reasons. Others come hear to "feel the void".. Others come to just communicate, Others come just for fun and others come to just make trouble. Nobody has a right to question the other person's reasons for being here we just need to respect each other's reasons, thats all"

To this I will, add...So what if there are cliques? so what if other bloggers PM each other plotting to sabotage your article? so what if some people are taking this blog thing a bit too personal? so what if some people come here to make a family and they dont get that? so what if some people resort to just reading and not replying as they dont have anything to say? SO WHAT, REALLY????
This is a blogging site, as far as I know.. not a Bala family gospel album.

3. The Language Policy
We've been talking about this since last year and it's one thing we'll never be able to resolve. Unless of course if TVSA could write an "English-Only-Policy and the system automatically reject replies written in venac.
Which would still be anti-rainbow. I mean, am i not allowed to speak the 11 official languages.
So what if I can speak, read & write seven languages of South Africa and none of them is my mother tongue? I feel comfortable writing them here on TVSA and its the only place I can speak all these languages without getting funny looks from people whome these languages are their mother tongue.
And I feel good after writing a Zulu phrase there and i see people responding to it... (without a funny look that i always get in real life)

4. Friends
yes, so what if some people come here to make friends? So what if some peopel clique and always seem to be pushing their own agendas? It's not written anywhere that  TVSA has sworn to make every blogger happy. We not all gon be happy coz you know what, this is nobody's home... we need to learn to accept each other and remember that THIS IS A BLOGGING SITE, afterall.
Like Porsch says, make your own friends... form your own circle of Buzums  or BBB's.

And reason number 5. STOP COMPLAINING. LIVE LIFE.

I believe it's not about disagreeing at all....it's the tone of what's written that is a problem.

So what if I can speak, read & write seven languages of South Africa and none of them is my mother tongue? I feel comfortable writing them here on TVSA and its the only place I can speak all these languages without getting funny looks from people whome these languages are their mother tongue.

Ok, the language issue. I agree, there are 11 official languages in mzansi, great. But now, when someone writes an article, and it stirs replies, a lot of people might want to form part of that discussion. The moment an entire reply of 20 senteces is written in zulu or sotho or any other language, it puts me off, because I cannot read it. Those who can will then reply in the same language, and like that, I can no longer be part of that blog.
Look, its one thing when someone writes a line or two in their mother tongue, coz we all know that some thing sound better in venec, but when replies to a blog become that language and only that, its a bit much.
Personally though, I've let the language thing go, the moment I can't read, i just skip the reply, and if more come from that blog, then i just stop reading that blog.
I guess that's really the only way past it.

Language

Porsch I feel you on this one, but yet again SA has 11 official languages its about time we learn other peoples languages and what a better way of learning, this is simple if you dont want to read what's written in Zulu then dont or you can ask the person who posted a reply to translate, its as simple as that. ( by the way i'm Sotho and dont understand what they say sometimes but it doesnt bother me, i have to learn)

I fully agree...

Thank you Rene, Vesa and Yehake for raising those points.

Porsch and carino you two are completely missing the point. i see you've read this article with preconceived ideas and didn't at all get what i've said there. there really is no need to be defensive. who said there's anything wroing with cliques? go back in that article and see if i've said anything along those lines because i did say i myself have my own set of friends here so why would i want to stop other people from doing the same? it's the manner in which some cliques behave thatr's the problem. and this is not about nursing people's egos; it's a matter of common decency and showing respect. as some people have said yes we are here to have fun but there are limits. clearly we don't agree on that.

the language, as i've said there's nothing wrong with that. you say here you do it cause you like it and everyone should do what they like...if you can respect your right to do that why can't you respect another person when they ask for you to please limit your use of vernac cause they don't understand? it's especially more disturbing when it's the owner of the blog that's asking and they get completeyly ignored. where's the respect in that?

and this is not about complaining..it's about raising issues here which DO NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. courtesy goes a long way. this is something very lacking by some people here...

Nah, I dont think we are that far down yet, i just wish we could learn to respect each other, after all, we are all grown folk mos? If the issues addressed here are not constructively used, then we are headed there, but the fact taht we can still talk about this shows that there's hope.

@carino:
"so what if other bloggers PM each other plotting to sabotage your article?"
And you seriously do not find anything wrong that statement?

If you do not like someone's article, why don't you just ignore it?  Why do you need the 'back-up' of your 'clique',  'crew' or whatever.....???  Why not be man / woman enough to put across your grievances / dislike of the person's article?

I think I know agree with BS, it is not high school attitude, it is primary school attitude.

By making that statement, I did not mean i know of any of that behaviour going on or I I'd even support it if it was happening.
I wsa simply referring to what Miss K said:

@Miss K
Nice one Kele. My biggest issue right now is the ganging up on some1. Its like some cliques PM each other and plan to ruin some1's article. Especially if the writer of the article is not 'famous' here

I was simply saying we need to chill... we cant be talking about the same issues year in year out... Clearly these things can never be resolved coz we are all different and we come here for different reasons.

KeleFabulous
19 May 2008 03:19

I think we all have a different idea of what blogging is about. to me it's about sharing ideas, knowledge and experiences. it's about a little mischief and some serious talk. it's sometimes even about escaping reality but...BUT not about hiding from it. looks to me like some people simply have issues in their own lives which they can't address so they would rather come here and take out their frustrations on others cos "what are they gonna say/do as they don't know me"...that is just plain petty and shows you're hiding the real you. which is not a problem ofcourse. unless you have no backbone.

C'mon sing along... ....

Oh do you remember (ooh)
When the family was everything? (ooh)
Oh do you remember? (ooh)
It was so long ago and so much has changed (ooh)
I wanna go back (go back...ooh)
Wanna go back to those simple days (ooh)
I wanna go back (go back...ooh)
But now we've grown and gone our separate ways

(aah)
Times is hard (times is hard)
And things are a changin'
I pray to God
That we can remain the same
All I'm trying to say is our love don't have to change
No it don't have to change

Do you remember (ooh)
Back at Grannie's house on Christmas Day? (ooh)
Help me sing...
Do you remember (ooh)
How we'd gather 'round and sing all day? (ooh)
I wanna go back (go back...ooh)
To playing basketball and football games
I wanna go back (go back...ooh)
To yesterday but it's not the same

Times is hard (times is hard)
And things are a changin'
I pray to God
That we can remain the same
All I'm trying to say is our love don't have to change
No it don't have to change

Times is hard (times is hard)
And things are a changin'
So I pray to God
That we can remain the same
All I'm trying to say is our love don't have to change
No it don't have to change

And get on with life, coz we all Ordinary People.

It doesnt take a magnifying (correct me ka spelling) glass to see what happens on TVSA. Every inteligent mind can come up with a solution that may not be 100% correct but close to teh truth. Take the Khampempe commission instead.
As for PM's not even people with Admin next to their names would be able to view them. IMPOSSIBLE unless a hacker. And if you can check there is no MOD or Hacker next to my name aone of the reasons of the dropping of that name being the little plots that happen on this site and after there being one name to blame.

19 May 2008 08:01

Nice one Kele. I read this this morning but didn't have a chance to reply.
Here is my 2c's worth:

1.Language: Personally I don't have a problem with use of vernec on the site because if I don't understand what is being said I move on to the next article or blog site.
2. Gangs/Crew: I also don't have a problem with them as long as they are doing their ganging-up business far away from me and besides, we musn't forget that we have 'kids' (it doesn't matter whether you are 19/20/23 or 26) who try to pass themselves as adults but signs of immaturity always creeps through. We need to forgive them.

3.What I have gripe with/about is this 'I have this and that card' always being played or shoved at our faces. Don't get me wrong I don't have PHDS and I don't have a problem with people talking about their successes or failures, but I don't want it to be in my face all the time. This issue was discussed before in another blog and yes I know that people aren't supposed to be apologetic about what they have and yes people need to hear it more often in order to get motivated BUT don't over do it please.....you are not the first or only people on this site to have aquired that much (materially and otherwise)...Aren't you suprised that only few of you talk about that...do you really think that you are the only people who are succeful in life.....it's like listening to a mafikizolo BEE brother who starts every sentence with MY BENZ THIS, MY COMPANY THAT, MY R3M HOUSE THAT....Tone it down asseblief.

Will comment about article writers later!

So Kele this name calling, will never end not now not tomorrow. I thought im allowed to express myself with any language I know as long im not using strong language. I never tried to undermine anyone & if someone felt terrible about Chommys dress bought from Truworths (yes Im the one who came up with this thing & I never knew people will talk as if its Zumas rape case). I guess since we are all adult you know better that Chommy never bought that dress from Truworths & Im not expecting anybody to cut my throat except Chommy. So why you bothered yourself while you know. .................We are just different people so let it be that way..............thanks & gudbye

the point of this article was to make it known what all this negativity is doing. some chose to see it the way it is, some took offense, some even stood up and admitted to having done all these things. so in that sense at least now we all know and have raised our voices..doesn't matter if we disagree, we now know.

and ja, i've been sent some comments made by those who know themselves and haven't said anything here, but chose to do it emakhoneni. go figure. like i said, the point has been put across.
