SYTYCD: SA Show Of The Year!

Kristin & K.G's Swansong

Last night (Tuesday 9 September 2008 at 19h00) Kristin and K.G. were the first dancers to be eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance SA.

KG_kristin

Unfortunately for them they were given a terrible Tango routine to dance on Saturday's first live show and ended up paying the price with both the public and the judges.

Also in the bottom of the voting-pile alongside them were: Louisa and Thabiso; and Tania and Alistor.

louisa_thabiso

tanya_alistor

Each of the six danced for their lives and after deliberations the judges vetoed that Kristin didn't have enough attitude and that K.G. hadn't delivered as he should.

18 dancers remain to dance the night away this coming Saturday.

***Show Of The Year***

Saturday night's first live show was the bomb in a Big way - I had such a rip watching, commenting and chuckling away at Nigel's American choppers (teeth) - that I didn't want it to finish. By the time the credits came up I decided that the show has to go down as The Best SA Show Of 2008. My reasons:

1. It's tight, tight, tight in all ways - it's 21st century hott and hipp. The techno picture quality's excellent, the pace's perfect , the lighting's edgy, the costume's are great - except for three of them - and while the sound had moments of being iffy at the end I'm trusting they'll have it sorted next week.

All in all the live show lived up to the high expectations set up by the audition phase and created the excitement for more.

2. The dancing's killer  - everything was so dynamic and constantly different and interesting. There wasn't a moment where I lost concentration or felt bored. The different choreography and intriguing music choices kept all my senses enthusiastic and glued. I also very much enjoyed seeing and judging the different choreographers.

3. Lurrrrrve seeing so many different dance forms. SO want to be a Crumper you have no idea.

4. The show's authentic to the international reality format and genre, while being strongly and proudly South African. It's globally connected mixed with being locally rooted, giving it a sense of worldwide scale and buzz.

5. It's very artistic. I recently heard a fab description of what art is - on a Heartlines insert on SABC2.  It's an insert about a photography project happening in Cape Town and the guy organising it describes the essence of art as "breaking down every barrier" - which SYTYCD does.

It doesn't matter where the dancers are from, what their beliefs or backgrounds are - they all become unified and one through the show. Together they transcend every socially imposed barrier that results in something indescribably spiritual.

Saturday Night Fever 2

Here's who's paired up with who and who's-dancing-what on this Saturday's show:

Tania and Nqaba : Contemporary (fast)
Darren and Megan: The Pasadoble
Katlego and Elizma: The Foxtrot
Blaze and Marise: Afro-fusion (slow)
Taekwondo and Lee: Hip hop (fast)
Bathembu and Tamara: Crumping
Ashley and Kim: Pantsula
Louisa and Tabs: Salsa
Tanya and Alistor: Tango

I have to agree with you Tashi, the show was AWESOME!

The live show recording went perfectly well but results show was a challenge.
It took more time to record the 30 mins results show than the 1h30 mins live show. They should have warned us that the show will take forever though(6 hours) to record.

That Nigel guy is a control freak, damn that man was a judge and a director all in one.
Once again, big ups to Sade!(WOW, I'm beginning to sound like her groupie now...)

I have a problem with this thing of eliminating 1 girl & 1 boy. What if 2 boys(or 2 girls for that matter) suck during their solo?

"You must mean SABC2....isn't jika majika on sabc1 at that time slot? i would have missed it anyway cause i didn't know there'd be something to watch on sabc2.....dayyuuuuuummmmmmmm!"
Tox gal, u must start paying more attention, on Staurday Sade said it a zillion times that on Tuesday @ 19h00 on SABC1 we are going to have our first elimination show. Gal, don't 4get next week. I seriously believe that SYTYCD is the best thing to happen to SABC1.

As for Louisa & Thabiso being on the botteom three, I think SA viewers are doing what they do best. which is voting on looks and not performance and guys that is so wrong. Coz those two are super talented!!!! I am so glad the judges had the power to save them.

Sometimes it's even easier to log in via the forums. I don't know if I am making sense, but ke nawe Rene, just fiddle uyoze ungene sisi. U were really missed these past few days love.

Eish Nonny..I wish hey. You see, this TVSA.co.za.com thing just comes up from nowhere. Mina I implicitly type www.TVSA.co.za, but then the browser adds the dot.com at the end.
Also, if i google TVSA, or a topic, www.tvsa.co.za will come up as one of the results, but the moment I click it, guess what comes up, the tvsa.co.za.com website, which  is just a search engine as well by the way, or rather, something masquerading as a search engine. Trust me, there is nothing I haven't tried, the best thing is too just wait, and keep trying.
I'm glad I was missed though...thanks!

After having watched the build up to and the first live show of SYTYCD Ifind it interesting how a young lady who has danced for twenty years and has had formal dance traing and who earns her living dancing is voted out of the competition on the first night. I believe that she has the best technique, figure and lines of all the female dancers.
Outside of her first audirion Kristin was hardly seen on camera, her dance into the top twenty was not televised bar for a few seconds in the corner of the TV screen at the end of the show when the titles were flashing past. I get the feeling it was pre-planned, don't give her exposure and when she is voted off the show no one really cares because no one has seen what she can do.
If the sponsors and producers of the show want to expose tha vastly untapped potential of dancers in the country and show how they grow in the competition that's great, but make it clear  that it is the plan up front. At least those dancers who are already established and enter the competition know what they are in for and don't have to be subjected to verbal abuse and humiliation by a group of foul mouthed judges.
After KG and Kristin's dance it was obvious from the choreographers reactions that he disagreed with the judges comments. One might say sour grapes, but why was he asked to choreograph if he didn't know what he was doing, surely only recognised choreographers are invited to work with the dancers.
I find it strange how David can tell Kristin how bad she was yet here is a man who has employed her services on several occaisons for corporate funtions, and the way that they pay you would think that he would only employ the best dancers to enhance his reputation.
The bottom line is really that a male dancer from a previously disadvantaged community is going to win this competition. The females don't have what it takes, and the dancers with any formal training will slowly be voted out of the competition. I say again that I think it is wonderful to expose new talent and wath it grow over the weeks of the competition, but don't try anf fool the public into believing it is a fair competition, anyone who has been involved it the dancing industry can see through it.

Kristin fan

That has always been the nature of the show Gardyne. There's a 'Chosen One' and cannon-fodder, and contestants for whom they've planned story-arcs.  Some get plenty of exposure during the audition rounds to ensure that they'll have a fan base and others are deliberately ignored to ensure that they won't.

In the end it was up to Kristin to dance so well that the judges couldn't criticise her (she didn't) or to be so charming that the public would instantly take to her (she wasn't).  We've seen contestants on the American show defy the judges plans so it's not impossible.

Hopefully the exposure she got was enough to make the experience worthwhile.

cimmanim
10 Sep 2008 10:29

I agree with Gardyne. I had not seen Kristin since her first audition even though she is someone I have worked with before (being a professional dancer myself). All I can say is I can't believe she was voted off before Tamara. That girl danced terribly on Saturday night. One could not even call that comtemporary. She ran around in a tutu and jumped on her poor partner not presenting an ounce of talent. Kristin and Kg were dignified although not given the best material to work with. I think this show is all about the 'characters' of people and not necesarily their talent. People will vote for the people who are not necessaily the best, but who they feel sorry for or under-privileged dancers. It also helps if your parents have a lot of money and can sms as many times as they like. At least in the American show the winners were the most talented dancers.. so much for that happening here..

cimmanim
10 Sep 2008 10:32

oh and for "Cande" or whoever...Kristin is beautiful and so are her eyes. So next time you want to LOL maybe get up from in front the computer and go and do something productive with your own life

Toxic
10 Sep 2008 10:46

cimmanim-chill dude. there is nothing wrong with her eyes. When she was told that she was 'dull' on Saturday, her eyes didn't register any emotions thus confirming the dullness.

Kristin got voted off, get over it. That goes to you too Gardyne.

Cande
10 Sep 2008 12:37

cimmanim, please you also need to get your facts straight before you starting suggesting wht i do with my life..as if you even know what i am doing with my life that is not productive..
I never said anything about the dancer in question, even if i did it is my democratic right to voice my opinion..
What makes you think other dancers in these competition havent been in this dancing game long enough to be pro's?
Your favourite dancer might be the best according to you, but clearly she didnt dance up to the judges and the viewers's standards last week saturday

Cande
10 Sep 2008 12:46

ooh Gardyne dont start with the "previuosly disadvantaged" escapegoat ...all these dancers have talent and its a stiff competition
and the end of the day its the judges and the viewers who determines who leaves and who stays...
