It's 7 years since the planes crashed into the towers,do you still remember what you were doing on that day when u heard of the "attack"?
As South Africans we've lived through memorable world historic moments in the past 20 years. From the collapse of the Berlin wall, which signified the end of the cold war, to the release of Tata, the Rwanda genocide and the marvelous day of 27th April 1994 were all South Africans cast their vote for the very first time.Irrespective of Race, creed or religion.
But today 7 years ago we also witnessed one act of global terrorism that will go into the history books along the above mentioned events. When the two aeroplanes crashed into the trade centre's two towers.
I used to be one of those who thought it was "payback time" for the US for all the attrocities that their state has caused against other countries. But when thinking of the human factor, the lives that were lost and the families that were touched and forever changed by that event. With time my stance has changed from "pay back time" to sympathy and wish for such acts never to happen again.Unfortuneatly with guys like Bush as president,I don't think he has cultivated such an enviroment
As for where was i when i heard about this? I was in a train travelling back from wits and my friend Reneilwe left a voicemail to watch CNN, 'it's going down'. the voicemail beemed. When i got off the station,Benoni was deserted more than ussual. When I got home I sat there enjoying the fact that ,"ja at long last" someone has suck it to the americans.I remember seeing pics and videos of guys in Gaza celebrating too.But the more i stayed watching; the 'falling man', the dust and peoples reactions on the ground. The sadder it got,"imagine if it was your mom at the office and a plane just crashes like that into her building".
The next four hours I spent watching CNN over and over again. My mom came back from work and we just sit there quiet watching the news until like 10pm.And as they say the rest is history,so where were u on 11 september 2001?
