Youth radio station TRU-FM recruited popular video jockey Andile Mcebu to host its breakfast show in yet another shake-up to boost flagging listener numbers, it was confirmed on Wednesday.
Ncube, whose only claim to fame is to be the presenter of SABC 1 music show Live, will commence his new job on March 1.
He broadcasts from SABC’s studios in Johannesburg alongside Nathi Buzani – who left CKI-FM last year to team up with DJ Gordon Graham at AlgoaFM.
This comes just a month after a surprise major reshuffling which resulted in DJ Phiwe “Pastor” Nozewu, who hosted the breakfast show for the last five years, being demoted to an evening slot.
Nobuzwe “Boozie” Mabona, former midday show presenter, stepped into his shoes with rookie DJ Buck Makila.
Ncube’s appointment will see DJ Boozie being demoted to the graveyard shift, between 12am and 3am, while Makila will be a specialist lifestyle presenter.
In December acting station manager, Thobeka Buswana, admitted that the breakfast show’s listenership had plummeted from 63 000 to 57 000.
According to figures released by the SA Advertising Research Foundation in May 2007, CKI-FM recorded its all-time low listenership of 58 700 listeners.
The figure has since dropped to 54 500 listeners by November.
CKI-FM will be joining Umhlobo WeneneFM and UkhoziFM among the stations to use personality driven DJs who broadcast from the Auckland Park studios in Johannesburg.
