A new second season of the reality show Ice Road Truckers premieres on History this Monday (19 January) at 20h30.
Starring real-life truckers, the show follows their adventures as they navigate their 40 ton trucks over treacherous lakes that have frozen over for winter - indecisively poised for collapse.
This season the crew's at the mercy of a new manager who gets them to conquer a tougher terrain than Season 1 as they drive over rivers that lead to the Arctic Ocean.
Their route runs over the Ocean and the Mackenzie River in the farthest reaches of Inuvik, Northwest America.
The long history of survival in Inuvik during the gruelling winter months has been and still is dependent on these ice roads. Although technology has changed how they deal with the colossal forces of nature of the Arctic Circle, the native people of the region still live by their traditions and rich history.
The tides of the river rock the ice plates and the remote and less accessible outposts mean they're all out of the reach of emergency supplies and rescues.
Truckers who return from last season are Hugh, Alex, Rick and Drew.
They team team up with: 26 year veteran Jerry, nature loving Eric, Ice Road native Davey and ex lumberjack “Bear” Swenson.
The Season premiere begins with a bridging episode called Road To Season 2, which ties up the first and second season for those who missed the first.
There are 15 episodes in the season and the show runs weekly.
Fast fact! The mining company that owned the road-route the truckers travelled in the first season didn't want to be involved with the second. They claimed that the truckers came across as hooligans who'd risk anything to make a buck. They also complained that the show presented the road in the negative light.
This resulted in the new route for the second season.
