I used to be in a lift club many years ago and I hated every minute of it. I hated the music this guy played in his car, hated the small talk in the mornings when all I wanted to do was read a book.
He had recently acquired a drivers licence and the journey always felt like a roller-coaster ride to nowhere.
I hated how he used his entire body to check the blindspot before changing lanes, how he sped on a hairpin bend so it felt like the car was on two wheels, I hated how he started hooting 5 houses away from mine when he came to pick me up; how sometimes he’d be late and not apologise; how he ate jungle oats and I’d have to endure the damn smell of it; how dirty the car was sometimes and I wouldn’t know how best to place my bum and I absolutely hated it when his toddler was in the car cause it meant BABYTALK throughout the entire journey! He wasn’t even cute mnciim.
Now that I have my own car and the petrol costs keep rising, I figured I’d give someone a lift to help with the petrol costs. I charged her per day (R2 less than she’d have paid in a taxi); picked her up at her door, dropped her off at her company neh. I’ll list her sins and why I no longer carry passengers:
1. Pick-up time in the mornings was 6.00 but I’d have to wait till 6.15 cause she was always running late! If you don’t know, 15 minutes makes a BEEEG difference on whether or not you’ll end up stuck in traffic.
2. She was a chatter and a loud one so it meant I could never hear the radio and the windows would steam up regularly, which meant I had to use the aircon to clear the windows.
3. She’d fix her hair in my car and hair strands would inevitably stick to the car seats or end up on the floor.
4. She’d change radio stations without asking or she’d turn on the aircon if she felt hot (she is on the PLUS side of life)
5. Sometimes she mistook me for a taxi driver and she’d give me a R50 note from which I was to take her fee and if I used her note to pay the toll fees, she’d fume if we were given “coin-change”.
6. Sometimes she’d eat on our way home-leftovers from meetings or her lunch or a pie and the smell from the pie stunk up my car. Or she’d ask that I stop at McDonalds cause she wants to get her daughter the happy meal or at the Spar so she could get bread etc.
So, now I’ve decided I’ll stick to travelling on my own cause I was using more petrol anyway picking her up, driving in traffic, picking her up at work and dropping her off at her house. I was always in a bad mood when I got to the office and when I got home. Now I can listen to what I want, when I want and as loud or softly as I want it to play. I can leave as early or as late as I choose and my mood is no longer affected by someone else!
