Lift club drama

Written by Toxic from the blog On the Road...and then sum on 30 Mar 2009

I used to be in a lift club many years ago and I hated every minute of it. I hated the music this guy played in his car, hated the small talk in the mornings when all I wanted to do was read a book.
He had recently acquired a drivers licence and the journey always felt like a roller-coaster ride to nowhere.

I hated how he used his entire body to check the blindspot before changing lanes, how he sped on a hairpin bend so it felt like the car was on two wheels, I hated how he started hooting 5 houses away from mine when he came to pick me up; how sometimes he’d be late and not apologise; how he ate jungle oats and I’d have to endure the damn smell of it; how dirty the car was sometimes and I wouldn’t know how best to place my bum and I absolutely hated it when his toddler was in the car cause it meant BABYTALK throughout the entire journey! He wasn’t even cute mnciim.

Now that I have my own car and the petrol costs keep rising, I figured I’d give someone a lift to help with the petrol costs. I charged her per day (R2 less than she’d have paid in a taxi); picked her up at her door, dropped her off at her company neh. I’ll list her sins and why I no longer carry passengers:

1. Pick-up time in the mornings was 6.00 but I’d have to wait till 6.15 cause she was always running late! If you don’t know, 15 minutes makes a BEEEG difference on whether or not you’ll end up stuck in traffic.
2. She was a chatter and a loud one so it meant I could never hear the radio and the windows would steam up regularly, which meant I had to use the aircon to clear the windows.
3. She’d fix her hair in my car and hair strands would inevitably stick to the car seats or end up on the floor.
4. She’d change radio stations without asking or she’d turn on the aircon if she felt hot (she is on the PLUS side of life)
5. Sometimes she mistook me for a taxi driver and she’d give me a R50 note from which I was to take her fee and if I used her note to pay the toll fees, she’d fume if we were given “coin-change”.
6. Sometimes she’d eat on our way home-leftovers from meetings or her lunch or a pie and the smell from the pie stunk up my car. Or she’d ask that I stop at McDonalds cause she wants to get her daughter the happy meal or at the Spar so she could get bread etc.

So, now I’ve decided I’ll stick to travelling on my own cause I was using more petrol anyway picking her up, driving in traffic, picking her up at work and dropping her off at her house. I was always in a bad mood when I got to the office and when I got home. Now I can listen to what I want, when I want and as loud or softly as I want it to play. I can leave as early or as late as I choose and my mood is no longer affected by someone else!

"He wasn’t even cute mnciim. " LOL

I don't give people lifts coz I sometimes leave work early..or come in late (blame it on PMS)

I once gave a lady from our church a lift from KZN to Gauteng-she did not pay a cent-she said thanks and jumped off..on top it I was fined for dropping someone on a freeway...Mncm...luckily for me I changed my numbers, I'm dreading Easters coz she'll ask for a lift back and in the church spirit I have to say yes.

The Lady, help me out here friend. Do you "have to" or chose to? I ask simply because anytime you have to, anything becomes burdensome because it's duty. Anytime you chose to, u have the freedom and that is joyful. Myname, gud luck babe, should you decide to take on misery, but then you might end up with the best of company who knows? I say this because I used to watch syndicate groups fight endlessly and purely by fluke we had the best groups in our. Still friends to this day.

A co-worker of mine used to take her aunt along most of holidays whenever she travelled home. So this other easter, she went to collect uAuntie, to her suprise, Auntie has also organised her friend who has already packed a huge luggage. the luggage included 20litres paint buckets. Iyo, she was so pissed off when she came back, especially because they didnt even pay her a cent.

I had my own drama this weekend....gave peeps a lift home to the North West I must say I hated every minute of it...Never again...@ the Lady maybe I should change my numbers 2....

I dont drink...and they drank in MY car all the way even spilled Savannah on MY seat....complained about MY rock music till i gave in and played Yfm...never mind that I can't stand the station with a passion. Lifts are like giving people control of your life for however many hours...sorry.....never...... n food.. you have to stick to KFC so to feed them as well.....

Thank heavens I travel alone, and before the driving I used to sleep in the taxi to avoid the small talks.

In the unfortunate event that I give anyone a lift, I tell them that they are not allowed to comment on my driving or tell me to change lanes. We listen to Gospel CD's or Metro FM.......if not we switch it off the radio alltogether. I have this habit of locking my windows from the drivers' side and the person will be pressing the window only to find out that nothing happens and I just pretend that I dont see them. No eating in my car, even my nieces know that!!

I travel with my man to work. He works further than me so that means that he has to drop me off evry morning. I love travelling with him coz  he just knows me too well. Knows when to shut up and knows when to talk. But ke there is always the downfall of having to wait for him every bloody day, even when Im in my moods and I want to get home early....

Molilo
30 Mar 2009 18:50

Bfr I bought my car I was always riding with my siblings or the guy who is always interested in me and NOT paying for trips.
I do not mind to give someone a lift as long as they behave and I wont wait for them as I never did that while I was a passenger.
I never understood y people will not want to offer people lifts going to the same place whereas I am standing on the road

Paralyzer
30 Mar 2009 18:56

30 Mar 2009 19:24

Molilo, it is not that I dont want to give people a lift, it when they become a nuisance by telling you how you should drive, and being touchy touchy with everything in the car, eating and spilling.

I wont mind having a good passenger, but seeing that I am still at work, who will want to wait for me? so rather than stressing about so and so, i would rather travel alone and pay for the petrol even if it is going up again on Wed.

I think I'm selfish, I just hate giving lifts-except to my friends.

I used to lift some guy at work-i hated how he banged the door when I dropped him off...and I just made it awkward for him to ride with me-I'd leave early or very late just to make sure he doesn't ask...he has sinus issues, that pissed me off more I think.Oh Lawd he is sniffling as I type this...nx!

Funny coz when I was in Dbn I used to be on a lift club-they didn't complain, worse if she wasn't going to work /if I was going to be late she'd drop her car at my place for me to take to work.

Am sure glad that the only person I ride with is my husband - we use our pick up to move around durin the week and when we give anyone a lift they sit @ the back!!!!!!! which when they jump out would be messed but I dont mind coz its not our leather seats!!!!!!

I hate giving people who smoke lifts!!!! even though I make my rules clear about smokin in my prescence just they themselves have that smell of cigarettes and when the heater is on when its chilly the stink!!!! I swear when they jump out I can still smell them!!!

I guess I am too fussy these are my car rules

If you late - I leave you period! If I am late you wait, its my car,
No touching the radio which will be off half the time unless I am listening to praise and worship or a great teaching
No eating unless I eat;
No dirty feet in my car, if you jump in with your kid - it must sit still unless its my nephew!!!
NO SMOKING even with the window open!!!!!!!
I only stop where I decide to stop no stopping at trees or sudden made up bus stops!
I am a nice lift giver - no petty converstaion if you start talking about the economy and its problems I give you one word answers thereafter I tell you about Jesus -
No throwing litter out the windows!!!!!
No heavy luggage - esp if its a long trip

Toxic
31 Mar 2009 10:23

hahahhahahahahahahahaa Jael!!!!!!!

Ms. Jay
31 Mar 2009 10:24

Yes and no banging doors - this one drives me up the wall!!!!! This one guy I work with used to bang the door - would only let him ride in front when my husband would be out of the country until this one day I told him in a not so nice way that if he couldn close the door nicely the back is where he belongs!!! then he used to comment on my speed and how I changed gears - tjo that was it!!!!! I told him he never owned a car so he needed to shut up or get out!

the thing with giving lifts is to find the right people, I dont charge you if you ride with me - I only ask you to obey the rules of my car for a safer 2009, I dont believe in charging esp if I am going in the same direction as you.....

LOL 2 your story Tox.... why do you have problem with everyone, maybe you were the problem....LOL

Well i once gave a lift to someone to and from work. One day on a friday, i saw this lady waiting for taxi on the same spot where i was robbed of my laptop, so when i saw her standing there i thought of that and gave her a lift. On our way she asked that i go with her everyday ...to which i agreed because she worked and stayed closer to where i was staying, she asked about money, i told her to tell and give me what she can afford, she told me what she was gonna give me and i agreed. two weeks on our lift thinging, she asked me to drop her husband at his work place and then said we will be travelling with him everyday... well it was far from our normal route so we had to wake up early and leave early to work, but leave let from work to accomodate husband ...well come month end they didnt have money but excuses ... i continued to take them and would even help them with groceries monthe end.... but they never paid me. i drove with them for about 3 months and when it was winter i stopped becaue i couldnt get out that early andd told them that i cant do this lift thing anymore ...and hey they were so angry with me.

and these ppl who always ask you when are you going home... i mean KZN from JHB and to them it's like you gave them lift from Carlton center to Bree ... tjo .... when you stop on the way to fill the car, they go out to get something to eat .

ms.tebby

No throwing litter out the windows!!!!!
No heavy luggage - esp if its a long trip
NO SMOKING
if you jump in with your kid - it must sit still
...'it'Jael? LOL..anyway I hate it if kids touch my windows, worse ke if adults test their heads on my windows!

Aowa Msoe! I didn't even save on the petrol i thought i'd end up saving.....we didn't work in the same company or even the same street. So i definitely went out of my way to give her a lift and therefore i was doing her a favour. the petrol i thought i'd save was spent on traffic cause she was always late so in the end i didn't benefit. I used up more kilos more quickly and had to service earlier than i would have had i travelled on my own.

A lift on an odd day is different to a day-to-day lift to work and home. i am so not doing this for free and would never expect someone else to.

A friend of mine once suggested we have lift club. my car one week and her car the next week. sounded like a great idea to save on petrol but the my only problem with it is i can start work any time between 08:00 and 08:30 and knock off anytime between 15:30 and 16:30
and i normally stay for couple of drinks with co workers after work.
I also like stopping at friends places after work, or pick one chikita on my way home

All this wont be possible if i have a lift lub

I've noticed that people who have cars ezinama electric windows open the damn windows for you(if you are the passenger in their car)-I don't get why coz if I want some air-i'll damn well open them for myself

maybe they are trying to avoid your body ordor no matter how pleasant you may think it is......kakwakwakwakwzkwa

@ BA-No one eats in my car if the driver (ke nna he!) is not eating, my sisters & nieces knows this very well.

I’m thinking of approaching Msoe for a lift, maybe one can safe a few hundred rands ka lift ya mahala…LOL

My observation:
Darkies: Always drive by themselves, alone even in a kombi/ 4X4. I wonder why.
Indians and Coloureds (sp): Drive in a group of fives even in Golf 1’s (these guys are doing something about traffic congestions, utilizing cars to the max capacity)
Mlungus: Either alone on with family.

before my car:
was in a lift club with this guy who was always late. when you were late he'd be on time. when you were on time he'd be late. when it was time to leave work he'd only then start on some project research his daughter asked him to do. did i mention he'd stop at the garage every other day a tshele R20/R50...at times we were already late and he'd have to stop for gas.eventually i dropped him and joined this other lady ...
whom i thought had a taxi driver bf (her bf taught her how to drive and i tell you she's worse than the taxi drivers). i dropped her cause i so didn't want to learn the tricks of getting to work in 20 mins in peak traffic. oh, did i mention she was always late picking me up but we always got to work on time?
recently when i was carless i travelled with this other lady whom everyone at work calls Miss Universe (she thinks she's all that and trust me she aint) woman was too loud, she'd swear at other drivers for ka*ing her off mara yena she'd expect silence from them when she'd do the same things that pissed her off. got tired of hearing how every man at work wants her and/or how mang mang a mo shela and how every cute guy you would mention mysteriously became her "buddy" and how she'd be in everyone's business. one of the days when i'd let my guard down i told my fellow lift clubbers (her self incl) of this one guy at work who was asking me out. she went as far as to go and ask him if this was true. i had had enough.

i now travel with this lady who is late on most days and is inconveniencing me as i want to start work at 7h30 so i can leave at 4h00 mara i end up working normal hrs because of her. seems that won't be a problem anymo as soon we'll be in different areas...

, it is because we(well most of us) are subjected to taxi's and buses at an early age that once one gets a car, it is hard to turn it into a mini taxi. I just wanted my freedom from other passengers, with family is different. They can fill up my car and I will have no worries and complaints.

I love my time and space in my car. Especially in the mornings because that is the only time I get to be "ON MY OWN". It's my time to PRAY, WORSHIP and SING PRAISES. I listen to what I want according to my moods. I channel hop like mad and sing along in my funny voice. I get to bounce my head and laugh at people who think I am crazy.

My escape from lift clubs is that I drive a small two-seater. Therefore I won't have abomama with luggage expecting a lift in my itsy-bitsy car. I am a one-person's company person so my car helps in that department.
I used to go around picking up four of my friends in my previous car. They would never give me petrol money when we go out, nogal I would have to pay for the drinks phambili.( I was a sucker for outings with friends). I then bought the two seater to save money. Lol!!

DISTURBIA!!!! That's me singing in bouncing my head in traffic. I enjoy traffic!

Hawu Nice even le onenyana passenger.  The main motive behind me buying my car is TAXI DRIVERS treatments, however i dont mind sharing with at least that 1 passenger, as long as they :
1.  contribute to gas
2. Do not eat while i'm driving
3. Do not nuka amakhwapaha

I also dont like opening my windows especially in winter. Thats my car, my smell.
Finish and Klaar. But I must confess gore I'm hardly on time.

Indians and Coloureds (sp): Drive in a group of fives even in Golf 1’s (these guys are doing something about traffic congestions, utilizing cars to the max capacity)
Mlungus: Either alone on with family

REASONS:
1. Indians are probably from the same house and going to the same workplace.
2. Coloureds work in the same place and are probably in the same kassie.
3. Indians and coloureds understand the meaning of a lift club is not a "PREVILAGE" It is a "HELP ME I HELP U" situation. They know they must pay for the lift.
4. Darkies: We either work in the area where your collegues live far away from you. We work different types of positions which require different times to report to work. eg 4x4 driver could be going to a business meeting.
5. Whities: Almost same reasons as darkies. When it comes to family rides you get the whole picture from the type of car. A safe, big enough family car. Anyway the kids go to school around their residential area and mom's work place.
