What was suppose to be an interview with Rebecca Malope about her Music career and being a Presenter of Gospel Time ended up being a comedy show that would have made David Kau proud. And no it was not Rebecca’s fault (to a certain extent). Everyone who attended the recording is responsible for making my Saturday morning memorable…more about that later….
I was told that I needed to be at the SABC studios between 7:30 – 8am if I wanted to interview Rebecca, needless to say Rebecca only came after 9am……So I left home at 6:50am, was at the SABC by 7:25 and when I got there, the securities didn’t allow me to enter the building because they didn’t know which studio was used for the recording of the show…..
you got to love the SABC securities….anyway I’m a clever child, I found my way to the studios eventually. Was welcomed by a very moody “Production Manager” with fake hair (
that’s if that’s her correct job title)…..
When I got there, the make-up artist was busy with one of Tshepo Nzimande’s artists…..the room came alive when Tshepo Nzimande joined us at the make up room, wearing some golf shorts that were “little too tight according to the ladies that were there”. Of course the size of the shorts was not discussed when Tshepo was around…..blacks and gossip…..nc nc nc…
All I can tell you about Tshepo is that, he is a comedian; I was literally on the floor laughing at his jokes which were mostly directed to his artists. As the time went by the make-up room became Park Station with people going in and out…..while still busy laughing at Mr Nzimande’s jokes, a girl (
whom I thought was a teenager) came to the room running and greeting everyone…as usual I was not paying attention…..
I only noticed it was Rebecca when they called her to go and have her make-up done………..now u must understand this was the first time I saw this woman in person…..I was so shocked how ordinary she looked…..if we were to stand in a queue and you had to guess who looked rich between her and I, trust me you would have chosen me without a doubt…….she was wearing a tracksuit with nike sneakers….yes I’m vigilant like that……
Tshepo and sis Ribs should not be allowed to be in the same room, those 2 are chaotic, funny, loud and plain crazy……add to that sis Ribs energy……the energy you see on stage, is no act, she’s got the same energy off-stage……I’m sure there’s name for people who are in a constant high……
While still grasping the fact that 30min passed without asking Ribs a question, another comedy scene took place…..A woman came into the room, to give sis Ribs a dress she made for her…..
She made this dress for Sis Ribs, without even knowing her measurements, a great gesture gone wrong if you ask me…..
The dress was made of ingxowa, what JHB people call ISAKA/LESAKA (sp)…..the room irrupted with giggles and naughty smiles including sis Ribs…I really couldn’t help myself but laugh out loud while the woman was in the room…..
Sis Ribs was clever enough to notice the embarrassment that was to happen….she jumped out of the make-up chair and went to greet the lady….she moved the lady AND THE DRESS to her dressing room……the door wasn’t closed properly when everyone started laughing……tjo that was a classic moment…..
But NO "
MY MOTHER" wanted everyone to see this nightmare she called a dress…she came back to the room to show the people how “beautiful” the dress was……I was told in no uncertain terms not to take photos of this master piece…..and of course my rebellious nature took charge….i tried to get few pics of the dress…….
All Ribs could say was “come guys, it’s the thought that counts…..the woman did this dress with love”…she said this repeatedly with a mischievous smile…….. of course I was not going to let this one down….i tried in numerous occasions without success to get Ribs to wear the dress so that I could take photos…..the dress was big and too long for sis Ribs….and I’m sure it would have damaged her skin….
eish..it kinda looks ok in pics....it also has an apron.....Dutch/Farm Design.....lol
it also has a hat......apparently there was one piece missing......Ribs will get that this week....
Back to the show The dress fiasco, threw my plans of interviewing sis Ribs out the window…..it was hard to concentrate and the shoot was running late…….but I did manage to spot some D-list gospel artists that came to perform on the show…..one of them was Winnie Mashaba who seriously needs a stylist ASAP together with her back-up singers.
WinnieI don’t know why Thokozani allow people to come to the show with their uniforms/dresses……hayi cha, what these people wear d-grades the quality of the show……sis Winnie and her back-up singers look “glamorous” if u have to compare them to the “Demo Time” artists that feature on the show……Tjo what I saw on Saturday was a nightmare….who dresses these people?
Winnie's backup singer on the make-up chair
The worst from the bunch was a group of kids that looked liked they were picked up from queues of Home Affairs in Marabastad…….no comment about the person that they were backing, who claimed to have been doing crime b4 turning into a gospel artist……and later offered to steal a car for me if I gave him my phone….and of course he clamed to be joking…………Brothers scared me to say the list….. clearly i looked like i needed a car......
I also saw Bhut’ Jay Hlungwani, in a Markhams velvet jacket in that HEAT…..I’m not sure if the Velvet thing is part of his uniform because his back-up singers were also wearing Markhams velvet jackets…….Guys it was very HOT in Jozi Saturday inside the studio and outside…how they could walk with those jackets its still a mystery…….how do I know they are from Markham’s? I checked the sleeves when one of them was doing make-up………

If you’ve noticed, in the past 3 weeks Sis Ribs has been wearing shoes that are 2 sizes bigger than her normal shoe size, so one of the missions I wanted to uncover was the reason she was wearing shoes that were too big and also, what on earth do the Producers of this show think of the viewers????….really now Thokozani, do you think people don’t notice such things? Anyway as you can see in the pic below, sis Ribs is back wearing shoes that fit her……
Correct Size.....They shoot 2 episodes in 1 day, and the shoot doesn’t take long, it goes quick once they start…and it also helps that Rebecca made few mistakes on the day…….
Another thing I was interested in was her sweating on camera……you see, her sweating is not partly because of her hyperactive nature, it’s also a result of the lights in the studio……..the producers of the show really need to do something about that……..one thing I forgot to ask was if the audience was rent-a-crowd like they did on IWTSG…..talking about IWTSG, Charisma was at the shoot as well, and she’ll be featured on the show that will be screened on the 26th of April. Apparently her album is finished, and according to a dear friend of mine, she is apparently in a relationship with Kgotso according to FB….my friend went further saying that Kgotso wrote on her(Charisma) Facebook wall “Luv”……
Jesus I should stop reading Bitch’s Brew…..now I sound like Kuli……I love you Kuli……
Music The only questions I could ask Sis Ribs were related to her 30th Album – My Hero. While bragging to her about the fact that I have 17 of her 30 albums, she put me on my place by asking what did I do with the other 13……Anyway, sis Ribs has released her 30th Album My Hero, and she’ll be recording a live DVD on the Easter weekend. So if you are interested to attend the show, contact Computicket or go to Shoprite or Checkers to get your tickets.
She will also miss the SAMAs this year as she’ll be touring southern Africa promoting her album. Immediately after the tour, she will fly directly to Israel to undertake her second visit to the Holly Land. Asked her what will make this trip different from the previous one, she said, she wanted to revive her faith and that she has grown since her last visit. She also told me that she’ll have a camera crew following her to record the trip. So lookout for the DVD/documentary of her second visit to Israel…..
Sis Ribs, if you read this…..can I please join your Tour bus when you tour southern Africa PLEASE especially when you go to Zambia….and no I’m not interested to go to Israel, I lived there and vowed never to go back there…even if the trip is free.
All in all, I had a great time on Saturday morning….Thanks to Faith for making this happen……now let me listen to “My Hero”…….
