Coming up on The Big Debate:
Episode: Sex, Sexuality and Respect
Channel: eNews Channel (DStv Channel 403)
Broadcast date and time: Wednesday, 13 May 2009 at 21h00
In this fourth episode of The Big Debate, host Dan Moyane discusses sex, sexuality and respect.
Violence against women has become commonplace in our society. A woman is raped every 28 seconds.
Up for debate: what role can culture and tradition play in rebuilding respect between the sexes? Are our patriarchal traditions part of the problem? Are traditional practices, such as those espoused by our President, compatible with our constitution?
Dan Moyana brings together traditional chiefs, gender activists, politicians and academics to discuss such customary practices as initiation and polygamy, as well as attitudes towards homosexuality.
A lesbian sangoma gives her view, saying that homosexuality is not un-African. Also on the show: Bonani Yamani, a student at the university of the Free State, who is suing his father and traditional leaders for taking him by force to a traditional circumcision school.
On the panel to debate the topic:
Inkosi Pathekile Holomisa, President of Contralesa
Thandi Modise, Deputy Secretary-General of the ANC
Dr Pumla Gqola, Wits University
Tseliso Thipanyane, CEO of the SA Human Rights Commission
