Youth Day / What does it mean to you?

Written by Jah Lady from the blog Youth Day on 02 Jun 2009

I have a question  for the bloggers in bloggywood but it needs a moment of thought and honesty to ones self.

And many of you will be thinking this before you give me a straight answer to my question.

(This is what will be in your mind after reading my question)
"I will be out partying or maybe even hung ova.
I will be at home chilling with my friends drinking away a storm... yay,"

WHAT DOES JUNE 16 MEAN TO YOU?

And before you give me the above answers think about it carefully.   What is June 16, What happened on June 16, how will I remember  the youth of June 16 and what am I doing to commemorate the youth that stood up for what they believed in?

Yeah I know, I know what you thinking right now (she is being too deep or she is being a tad bit cliché) but I'm actually being serious.
I mean youth day is about remembering the past....... but it also represents a turning point for South Africa and yes................ we as the youth of 2009, are that turning point but in order for us to be that point we need to understand our history to place a firm foundation of our future.

So before you give me an explanation just take a few minutes to think about it.

Take urself back to that day (even though you were not there) but place urself in their shoes and once you have an answer to my question (WHAT DOES JUNE 16 MEAN TO YOU) entice me.

Today's youth does not honour anything but then again we have to blame the ruling party for they think that to attract the youth you have to have some sort of bash.  I always think of Tsietsi Mashinini and Vuyiswa (the guy who was carrying Hector Peterson), I still wonder what happened to him.

Jah Lady
02 Jun 2009 15:42

@Mathaz

I think Vuyiswa was found dead or something like that, but instead of keeping the spirit alive and standing our ground on becoming better youth we just stand our ground on who is buying the next round of drinks.

To be honest with you this day has no meaning and insignificant to me, don't get me wrong I tried to understand but my ignorancy failed me. Maybe someone will educate me more about it.

According to my knowledge the government wanted to introduce Afrikaans as a medium of communication in black schools. Afrikaans and English was gonna be used on the 50/50 basis, what's the big deal?

I honestly believe that they wasted their time and died for nothing, I would honour them and call them heroes if they had died fighting for isiZulu, isiXhosa, isiTswana etc to be used as medium of communication in our schools.

My analysis is that innocent children were used by some forces to fight their own battles and agenda against the government of the time.

@myname

Don't be ashamed I think many of us are seduced into partying like freaks and when its sunday we sit in church with hang ova's are at times we don't even wake up to go to church.

And its not only Pretoria, even Jozi has those ppl who party like rock stars on fri and sat.

They were not only fighting for the language itself but other things as well but in my opinion the whole afrikaans thing was the last straw.

Afrikaans and English was gonna be used on the 50/50 basis, what's the big deal?

What's the big deal????  The big deal is that Afrikaans is not out mother tongue and it was imposed on us. I mean why give priority to a language that is understood by the Dutch.

Eish youth month really opened wounds that were healed. I lost a boyfriend last year in July,  yesterday in the news when they spoke of it I cried I remembered him. He was a youth leader and was very active during youth month. I thought of him and what he would be doing this month. I really wonder what is going to happen to me come 06/07

Please do educate me Jah Lady about the other things they were fighting for because the main thing that comes into your mind when you see June 16 is Afrikaans.

Why were they not marching against the use of English because I honestly do not see the difference between an English men and Afrikaners, they both regard a black person worthless.

Nowadays no one is forcing Blacks to speak Afrikaans but the old timers that are speaking it in the township are regarded clever and street-wise and some companies when adverising positions are still saying they want someone who is bilingual meaning fluent in English and Afrikaans.

Jah Lady

Guys don't look at it in a sort of language kind of way (even though it was part of the June 16 uprising)

But look at it in a way of those youth were able to get together and fight for what they believed in. I m how all was Hector Peterson?  Boys his age are in a hurry to have sex and attend their first street bash.

I mean, if 80% of SA youth, had to hear that SAB (South African Breweries) was closing down they would start their own 2009 uprising against beer!
And looking back would be our children and their childrens childrens and say "I dont see the big deal,".
Instead of making stand against HIV/AIDS, we are too busy preoccupied with other less important things.

So my point is the youth of '76 had bigger balls than the youth of today!

*Nuff said.

First of all even the teachers who were going to be teaching those students in Afrikaans didn't know the language themselves so it was obvious they were doomed to fail before the bell even rang, and beyond that there was political turmoil in the country so the whole 'afrikaans as a medium of instruction' introduction was just a catalyst to all the violence that ensued on June 16.

1 & only, u dont have to acknowledge them if u dont want to but don't undermine their fight and their struggle.

English and Afrikaans are business languages in South Africa whatever your opinion is about these two you will speak them like it or not. If you don't comply it then limits your chances of climbing the corporate ladder.

Mozambicans are speaking Portuguese not because they like it but because of the people who are controlling money there.

My observation again is that soon here in SA we are gonna be forced to speak Arab as Muslims are slowly starting to own most of the big companies, every big restaurant you go to nowadays is Halaal compliant, in the workplace Muslims are allowed to go to their praying meetings and also have separate toilets.

Most blacks now only use their mother tongue when dreaming because they don't have control over it, they don't say eish anymore but eina when it hurt somewhere.

Im so very dissappointed at some of you. June 16 is supposed to be a day where we remember our black brothers who died fighting for the oppression of who they were, their velues, the discrimination and ukubukulwa kolwimi lwabo bephoqwa ngenkani ukuthi bafunde nge-afrikaans yize kungelona ulimi lwabo ukuze amabhunu abacindezele kahle. Yes maybe it was the language that through them to their limits but they stood up and said enough is enough and we would die first before we are forced to fail in school on top of the discrimination we get outside of school.

I salute them because I know for a fact that God doesnt make youth like that anymore. All the youth of today know is getting drunk, having sex, drugs and acting as if someone owes them something.

TheLady
02 Jun 2009 16:52

02 Jun 2009 16:54

June 16 means nothing to me too (its just a day to get drunk and wear school uniform).....It would mean something they day the Black youth of today fights our government to recognise and use our african languages the way they use english...

they say we have 11 official languages.....mina i still  see english as an official language.

which is why our african schools still teach in english instead of using the language that the students speak. thats why the youth of today cant even speak their home languages perfect but they speak english perfect...

Kuphi ukuziqhenya ngolwimi lwethu njengendlu emnyama???

all my friends dont know the months of the year in their Hoome languages, and yet they say them very fast in english baze bathwenge...

people know very big words in english which they cant even translate to their home language,

Most blacks now only use their mother tongue when dreaming .....my mom says she hears me dreaming in english.....and i believe she's right...and i hate myself for that....

But one thing i believe in...is that vereything happnes for a reaosn...even the things that weredone with the worst of intentions, so instead of dwelling on how bad english or afriikans is...i ma glad i will be able to survive in this world bcos i understand them...and God knows we are living in a globe now,not juts good old little SA.
I need to polis up my Afrikaans bcos in my line of work...it is the langunage of communication in the boardroom......even if u ask that it not be spoken, they will say the non important issues in english...and elaborate to themselves later in afrikaans....plus they plot and gossip...i need to hear all that...

June 16..a very important event to me......and i can honestly declare that i dont just remember nor commemorate the day only on the 16th......(what does that mean anyway on a practical basis?)

The uprising was not only about Afrikaans

In 1953 the Apartheid Government enacted The Bantu Education Act, which established a Black Education Department in the Department of Native Affairs. The role of this department was to compile a curriculum that suited the "nature and requirements of the black people." The author of the legislation, Dr Hendrik Verwoerd (then Minister of Native Affairs, later Prime Minister), stated: "Natives [blacks] must be taught from an early age that equality with Europeans [whites] is not for them." Black people were not to receive an education that would lead them to aspire to positions they wouldn't be allowed to hold in society. Instead they were to receive education designed to provide them with skills to serve their own people in the homelands or to work in labouring jobs under whites.

This was found in this site - read more.  Very informative.

Personally I don’t think the youth of 1976 fought and died for nothing.

English and Afrikaans are business languages in South Africa whatever your opinion is about these two you will speak them like it or not. If you don't comply it then limits your chances of climbing the corporate ladder.

1 & Only : Today, we find blacks holding positions and sitting in boards of companies which were pre dominantly Afrikaans. Eg the banking industry. And these very companies, the business language is no longer Afrikaans but English. I deal with these companies and once in a while you will find a communiqué written in Afrikaans of which I always respond in Sesotho, just to let them know that I can also communicate in my mother tongue, but for the sake of commonality, I use English.
Yes South Africa has 11 official languages however; I still need to come across someone who can speak all 11 languages.
Now the issue of our kids failing to speak our home languages is not the teachers fault. I blame the parent. Things have evolved and we also need to evolve with them but that does not mean we have to do away with who we are and where we come from. The schools are there to prepare our kids academically and we parents we need to also take our role in raising these kids. Imagine if this was left solely to the teachers? Which language would be given preference?

FK
02 Jun 2009 19:22

@ Jah Lady, I hear you and feel you big time.  As Reggie has stated, this is in the past.  What is the struggle of the youth in 2009?  Is it booze, drugs, promiscuity?  They need to find their own struggle.  The struggle of 1976 should just be a constant reminder that, Yes the youth of South Africa can be heard, can do something about challenges and make a difference.  They can't be riding in the back of 1976 forever while neglecting todays challenges.

lol? yell mense we do love to romanticise history nhe.I believe June16 just like April 27, Human rights Day and heritage day are reminders of our past and were we come from as a people and as a nation. What lesson you take from that past, its your own baby .But I belief the most important thing is what do we do with those lessons. We cant always be compared to a bygone generation that lived in a totally different world, but we can  be asked how are we implementing lessons learned from that past.
the issue of language for me is a very important one,but i believe its more ideologiacal than a bread and butter issue.but thats for me.
One of our biggest challenge now,is what impact and legacy will we pass down to the youths who will follow us.When they look back at our times, what would they say.1976 were the forerunners but the race of life continues, whats going to be the contribution to that race; are we going to be flag bearers, innovators or people who constantly look back and never move forward and complain yesterday was better than today.wat dink jy mense?

Unfortunately We just picked on that and now it's our struggle! Every generation has it's struggles and sometimes they are not world shaking events that stop the struggle but they are still battles that in the long run, if won, produce a good foundation for the next!

I must say that people who seem at times intelligent on this forum have seriously dissapointed me! Why don't we as black people take the time to educate ourselves about our history! Why do we think it's someone's else duty to do that, while displaying our ignorance! Where's your responsibility?

June 16, I will be @ church...celebrating Youth Day da christian way. Acknowledging God and thanking Him for the Youth of 1976 and making a way for the youth of today.

We will be having a motivational speaker,  and there will be a al concert filled with Christian music groups,  and shows are presented, and there are plenty of social events to attend. Some of the highlights we  will be urging young people to let them be shaped by God in order to be messengers of divine love, capable of building a future of hope for all humanity.

Youth is the time when decisive choices concerning the rest of our lives come to fruition.Perhaps this is why it is the time of life when fundamental questions assert themselves strongly: Why am I here on earth? What is the meaning of life? What will my life be like? And again: How can I attain happiness? Why is there suffering, illness and death? What lies beyond death?

These are questions that become insistent when we are faced with obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable: difficulties with studies, unemployment, family arguments, crises in friendships or in building good loving relationships, illness or disability, lack of adequate resources as a result of the present widespread economic and social crisis.

After all we are the light of the world.

i guess what all the above means is that the youth of 1976 did not die in vain because we are utilising all the opportunities that we have coz of them. i think by sitting down and talking about issues, standing up for ourselves and actually having those things that they were fighting for= better jobs, education etc , we are honouring them.

03 Jun 2009 11:36

Whoever died on that day died for his/her own benefit not mine and they achieved nothing for that riot because until today in times of democracy under the black government schools are still teaching Afrikaans and is being taught by black teachers, so who's oppressing the other here?

To highlight the importance of English & Afrikaans most important documents are written in these 2 languages, companies will ask you your home language at the same time give you two preferred methods of communication Eng/Afr. It's a remarkable thing when a white person speaks one of our languages but not when we twang more than the owners of English.

Banks have realised the importance of languages in such a way that they have included black languages in ATM's but most of you are still selecting English because ATM is too complicated to operate in isiXhosa, seTswana etc.

Sometimes you find blacks as black as a bag of charcoal in malls, boardrooms speaking English when there aren't any whites around! You brag about your kid being clever/smart because s/he can speak English fluently! I bet you 2 bags of manure God is also laughing and puzzled at the same time because He's receiving prayers and requests left, right and centre in English from the Blacks.
Now I refuse to be blackmailed and brainwashed into thinking that June 16 is important to me, just like I don't feel nothing when Nkosi sikeleli Africa is being sung I won't even put my right hand in my heart.

What have you done so far to change something? we've had this holiday since 1995 (?) All these years you sit in your room and think about what you'll do to change the challenges for the year? What have every actually come up with in pas 6 yrs?I'll go easy on your and not count the rest...Damn the day is 24hrs my dear! And you are about 6 months too late coz in 13 days time you'll still be strategizing about 2009...And how much time do you think you'll need to implement your plan for 2009 before we get to 2010?

Guy what happened in Vegas stays in Vegas, some guys are worse than women when it comes to gossiping. Surely nobody needs to know what you were saying in Facebook.

Whoever said whatever on Facebook is not even an asshole but hair around it, because internet offers you maximum protection and all you have to do is sit on your bum and write whatever you wanna write about someone, so why be a spineless coward instead of telling it like it is here on TVSA go to FB.

After 76 Afrikaans was not abolished and still taught at schools, the black government would have made sure that it was abolished if it meant something to us. Since I was born with a gold spoon in my mouth, didn't go to school, didn't sweat for whatever that I have now, am not working because I'm reaping the fruits of June 76 I will spend the whole day crying on that day.

I have not read the blog or the responses... so bear with me...

I forfeited Youth day the day I got the badge for Mother's day. To me, youth day is a day for everyone that believes they are young at heart or have the energy (and the drive) to change this country to be a place filled with love, peace, kindness and complete TOLERANCE to start reliving the beliefs the youth of 76 marched and some died for. To get the that energy channelled in the right direction, rouse the really young children and teens with dreams (and sadly the ones who don't have dreams) and encourage them to achieve those dreams without getting involved in things that will kill or endanger themselves and others (crime) and start changing the worlds around them.

Krissy
03 Jun 2009 14:57

Today’s youth has a choice to have 1st language as English, Afrikaans, Sotho, Xhosa, Zulu, Venda etc. @ school. Basically they have a choice. The youth of 1976 was forced with Afrikaans. FORCED! Now mina if anyone had to force me to do something. I will speak up. Yes they also chose to speak up. Now I don’t think they planned for other kids to die that day. They did what felt right @ that time.

So my point is, they fought for what they believed in, and for that I give them the respect. That doesn’t mean I will mourn as someone said, but I remember why I am not at work but instead relaxing @ home. Just for a moment, appreciate the choices I have in life.

So again we also have a choice whether we remember that or not!! Its called history for a reason…
