TheTVObserver: Oprah Crossed The Line

TheTVObserver RSA Edition//01July2009

Our last post on TVSA involved giving away vibrators in the pursuit of sexual satisfaction for grown women. Now forgive me if I go off, but what bloody hell was Oprah thinking agreeing to having this Dr. address her audience with what I consider the most dangerous statement on daytime television. We were LIVE on TWITTER blogging about our observations, when we were traumatized by Oprah and sexual health Dr.. Well just so we are on the same page, here is her comment.

“So, yeah, we're enlightened. We're empowered. We're dishing out accurate information on an age-appropriate basis. So the next logical step, says "Oprah" sexpert Dr. Laura Berman, is to buy our teenage girls their first vibrators.”

Uh ... er ... our you crazy?...No really, have you lost the functionality of your senses?

Oprah did explain that she was not going to say it and she would never do it, even if she had kids of her own. Excuse me? You allowed your regular sexual health expert to make the statement on your show. Hello!

I am all for teaching your children all about sex in the attempt to get them fully informed, in order to prevent compromising situations and avoid HIV/AIDS. The entire episode was all about sex and teens, and providing disturbing information about what these teens are doing. If you have a teenager, you need to have a discussion NOW! They our doing some crazy stuff.

The teen girls give teen boys blow jobs like its candy and the boys don’t return the favor, in fact this other boy stood up on Oprah and claimed how easy it is for boys to get blowjobs. THUD!………

Sorry I just fainted!....

The sex therapist named Dr. Berman said that mothers should buy vibrators for their teen girls. The reasoning was that by doing this, it'd empower these young female teens to take the reigns to their sexuality and realize that they don't need a teenage boy to make them feel sexually good.

Yes, the audience was equally shocked and I think some of them wished they had tickets to another taping. I know I would have. Then there was this mother who was so confused about answering questions which her daughter, Jordan , was asking. Jordan is cute and very bright. The mother was terrified of answering her questions about sex, although she bought her a book, but when Jordan started asking tough questions based on chapters in the book. She didn’t want to address those questions and asked Jordan not ask her. This mother had a tough time, she could not even say masturbation.

A lot of her fans had a tough time with the show and felt she crossed the line, evidenced through countless blogs and comments. “Talking about the mechanics of sex (the birds and the bees) is one thing, but going so far as recommending vibrators was too much.” Said Alex, who watched the episode.

Experts in general advise that sex ed happen over a series of conversations on the subject, rather than one uncomfortable "talk" somewhere during puberty.

“I think it differs from child to child, but the truth of the matter is most teenage girls are curious about sex -- not just the mechanics of it, they want more than knowledge they truly want to know (what the big deal is).” Said one other viewer.

An audience member and mother to three boys, asked an important question, “If you are going buy a vibrator for teen girls, are you now going to start buying porn for boys?”. Dr. Lauren Berman could not even articulate her self in her response and clearly demonstrated that this was not thought-out. Oprah interrupted her attempt at a response by cracking a joke “vibrators under your chairs, everyone”, and the audience screamed and laughed. She continued by saying “you get a vibrator, and you get a vibrator”, whilst pointing, the audience just laughed. What a save by Oprah from preventing a major sinking of the O-Titanic. But that iceberg came too close and the ship will need some repairs.

Oprah1

The statement was a can of jumbo-sized worms, dying to break out. However way you look at it, this is not a good idea. If kids want vibrators, they should graduate from college, get a job, get their own home and buy their own vibrators. And pray to God you don't see when you visit. Parents should NEVER buy their children vibrators. C’mon.

Dr. Laura Berman sells vibrators, so this could be a stunt to help her line of adult toys. Through-out our live twitter observation, I could not help but think. She is the Devil! Trying to corrupt our kids. If you want to buy your daughter/s vibrators, Dr. Berman do it, DON'T convince us that we should join your f@#$-up ideas. Kids are screwed up as it is without giving them license to be pro's. Whats next? Encouraging pornography as a viable career? C'mon.

I also watched. I think that Oprah has got nothing to talk about on her show anymore. If it's not the secret, it's food or books or sex and health. There is nothing more. She should retire whilst till ahead.

I was so shocked by yesterday's show especially the part about orgasms to teenage girls, I think Jordan is 10.  Yesterday's show was just too much for me, it was just sex education on a higher level.

I watched in amazement...ngeke as much as I love Oprah I thought she was crazy to allow that woman to even suggest a show like this.

I was loving Gayle though...and Gayle has a 20/21 yr old daughter-she can't even buy a vibrator for her! Imagine buying one for a 15yr old!And ya toys are bought at ADULT shops..ADULT Oprah!

I'd like to believe that teenage girls that I know do not give blowjobs...

'Ssup TVO? Good to read something from you here.

Hey TVObserver,...long time, neh?   Back to vibrators,..  I am all for adult toys but adult toys are for adults.

Vibrators for children?  That is too much for me to stomach.  The sex toy market clearly is filled way too many competitors (that is one of the reason why they are giving the toys away for 'reviews' like it is cheap candy) and now they want to market it to our children?  That is a no no. NO.

I did not see the show but it sounds like it was just a cheap marketing ploy for the sex therapist.  Did the economic crisis forced everyone to having great sex without the help of sex therapist and now they have to branch out kiddie sex therapy?

ps.  I owed you a review on the pink one I won but you ignored my pleas,... maybe my reviews are not good enough for you?  Hahaha!

I also think that info was too much for the 10 year old that the menhood get hard and its ready to enter the woman's V.
I understand that the little girl is very smart i could tell but the info its not of her age.  She is only ten for heaven sake and when you teach kids that and buy them vibrators. what would happen if one day you bring a male friend and happen to be behind closed doors not talking about being in the bedroom and then they will start thing that the man is now hard and ready to enter the mother. That's very sick or next thing it will be that they will start checking the men if on their front its not flat and will think he is ready for a woman.
Its good to talk about things like that but it goes with the age and not as to go in that deeper details.

I watched the show with my mother and I was so embarrassed (I am 29 years old by the way!!!).

That was just too much information for 10 - 14 year olds.A 14 year old should be thinking about getting good marks at school and her career goals not sex!!! Jesus Christ what is this world coming to???

I never thought I would say this in my entire days as an Oprah supporter... "I don't agree with your advice"

tjo! I am still shaken by all the things that were said.

I do agree with having the talk earlier and explaining that sex should happen in a loving relationship (the talk is with a minor) and that girls should not be demeaned to administering oral sex to boys who stole their father's porn books and dvd's.

I just don't agree with the rest of what was said... especially with regards to introducing vibrators to young girls for them to masturbate... NO NO NO NO!!! Hell no!!!

Observer, Jordan was 10 years old...

I firmly believe in having the talk. my aunt had the talk with me when I was 16, and she called it "health education". she explained the body parts and didn't go as far as "when it is hard it enters the woman's vajayjay" she  just explained if the two parts ever touch, there comes a baby. so, I firmly believe in having the talk at an early age(10) and explaining the differences between boys and gals. you have the talk with your son about what degrading women is with regards to sex. and explain to your daughter how to handle degrading advances and respecting themselves and their bodies.

Hi Guys. Thank for stop by and for all your comments. We appreciate them.

@extinct, yes the show relevant until you know who decided to do what?

@cleve. Thanks, but shouldn't that be "read you in a while?" Whatever, thank cleve, but we never left, just took a creative break from SA and had more to do with our international oriented content.

@TerryN no chat? Okay take that as a welcome! Thanks

@blueroze such gossip, where did you get that LOL. The fact is that based on reader stats on our posts on TVSA, we had to select carefully what we blog about. Hence we focused more time on our international blog (We have more information for that audience, including contacts) and we are having lots of fun with readers all over the world, mainly US. Besides we are not into vintage...it is soooooo not worth observing...LOL But our focus on TVSA has always been shows with MASS APPEAL, thus a focus on broadcast-TV (what you call free-to-air), instead of pay-tv

I would freak as a parent to think that my daughter is having an orgasm in my house with a zzzzzzzzz sound coming from the bedroom.

No ways. What happened to masturbating the old fashioned way. Use your hands. It's safe and clean and I, as a parent wont know about it.

Thanks TVObsever for the article. Haibo I thought that Dr woman was nje some pervert who engaged in sex at a very young age and so she wants to pollute all other kids. You know people who are sexual freaks always want to corrupt everyone else.

It's okay for people who share sex advise with adults on how to orgasm. Hayibo, I had to unconfirm facebook friends who are younger than 18(well I only had one friend who is younger than 18) because I am always directing people to read my sex advice articles by posting my links.

Most of us knew about orgasms from self-discovery, not from our moms.
