The 4th annual South African Film and Television Awards have arrived.
They take place at the State Theatre in Pretoria this Saturday, 20 February 2010 and will be broadcast live on SABC2 from 20h00 to 23h00.
Here's a recap of the nominees in each category as well as a breakdown of the top nominated shows - as published on TVSA when the nominees were announced in November last year.
The nominees for the 4th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) were announced at an event held at Johannesburg's Atlas Studios on Wednesday 18 November, 2009.
This year the SAFTA committee received 221 entries, which were adjudicated by a panel of "industry experts", who decided that the best show in the country in the last year was the SABC1 drama series A Place Called Home, which received the most nominations of any show: nine.
The drama - starring Thomas Gumede, Bubu Mazibuko and Ronnie Nyakale among others - is based on the novels Finding Mr. Madini and Great African Spider Writers by Jonathan Morgan, about a writer who inspires and finds inspiration from homeless people living in Johannesburg.
Among its multitude of nominations are ones for Best Director (Akin Omotoso and Rolie Nikiwe), Best Actor (Ronnie Nyakale), Best Ensemble Cast and the most prized television award of the night, Best Drama Series.
It's worth noting however that three of SABC1's "Shakespeare in Mzansi" mini-series - which aired on the channel from 11 March to 19 August, 2008 - were nominated for multiple awards.
Nominations for Izingane zoBaba (6), uGugu no Andile (3) and Death of a Queen (2) - all of which were based on Shakespearean plays - brings the total number of nominations for the "Shakespeare in Mzansi" strand to 11, effectively making it the most popular "series" of all.
The soapie to receive the most nominations this year was Isidingo, which shared 7 nominations with the SABC3 drama series The Lab. Isidingo has won more SAFTAs than any other show since the awards started in 2006 - a staggering 26 wins in three years to date.
The top comedy series was Stokvel (six nominations). Stokvel is the winningest comedy in SAFTAs history, with 9 awards from the two years it was nominated in.
Shows that aired on the three SABC channels garnered 83% of the nominations in the television categories, with SABC1's shows receiving the most nominations - 47.
By way of contrast, M-Net shows received just 7 nominations, while e.tv fared even worse, with a mere 4 nominations for its shows.
Fana Mokoena - who was previously nominated for Best Actor in a TV Drama for his role as Jaws Bhengu in The Lab in 2007 - was this year nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor awards, for The Lab and Hopeville.
Without further ado, here are the nominees for the 2010 SAFTA Awards. We've included the most interesting awards - for the full list (including all the film nominations) please visit the
