Deployment trap catches local film industry

All hell has broken loose as Creative Workers Union has stolen from ANC cadre diployment Philosophy after all the President has spoken "Artists unite", Now they want a South African to be deployed to play Winnie's role.

This bunch of amatures wait till someone is about to do something, if they care so much about telling their stories why wait till Darrel Roodt secured this deal? If they are so good in telling their stories why do we hardly see South African produced Film in the big screen? The Tsotsi success argument is tired infact despite the oscar Tsotsi wasn't a heat in the box office. Our local heats are Leon Schuster commedies, that's the best stories we tell, when an ant invades one's private part. we need to hear more successes, especially recent ones. If Nollywood or Bollywood are our models how much are we doing what they are doing? We are a multicultural nation, Bollywood is about Indian Culture and has got loyal viewership, even Nollywood potrays stuff one would read in Chena Achuebe's work. Anyway who is gonna be deployed to play Winnie, if the consend is that Jennifer Hudson can't speak Xhosa does that mean that role will only suit Xhosa speaking? We've seen how deployment suck in the government is that the model we want to use to build our industry?
Lets stop trying to run while we can't even walk.

hmmmmmm.

They have a point but then again people should make decisions that are going to benefit them and the producer knew that Hudson would be his/her money maker.

Again, nothing was said about Charlize Theron who is proudly South African playing that Monster lady character thing, which won her an Oscar, and we were all happy about that.

hmmmmmmmm! Wassap with the wrong DATE??

I never heard Winnie speaking Xhosa.
I think Jennifer Hudson  is the right person to play the role, she's black and talented thats all matters. i don't see anyone in SA being a right person for this role.  Jill Scott can be the right person ..ooooops she's from America too.

But Roodt, who directed the Oscar-nominated film Yesterday, said the project was "lucky and blessed to have someone like Jennifer Hudson who (will) bring the movie to a big international audience".

That Hudson, who has won a Grammy award and an Oscar, was cast as Madikizela-Mandela was a testament to her talent, Roodt said.

Her casting had also helped to secure a budget for the film, he said.

Roodt said the movie would create job opportunities for 500 or more South African actors and the union's action against it "reeked of censorship".

Kani said the government should introduce a work permit system. "That's all we're asking for," he said. "They should've approached the union."

"Our work is taken by international actors while we can't even get through customs in their country.

SA artists have a sentimental point, but this is business at the end of the day. and business means profit. Jeniffer Hudson is well-known and will pull more profits that Florence Masebe would, if she was chosen fro the part.

Hudson is big and we know that she can deliver, WORLD WIDE, not just in SA.  The producers were looking at the business side of things and I don't blame them.

Even though I understand feel for SA artists , but i still think on the money, (international)  success of the movie, Jeniffer Hudson should take the role and other SA artists will then take other roles, its not like the entire cast is going to be Americans bathong.

Anyway who is gonna be deployed to play Winnie, if the consend is that Jennifer Hudson can't speak Xhosa does that mean that role will only suit Xhosa speaking? I  watch The NO.1 Ladies' Detective Agency and Jill Scott is really trying, always saying: "Dumela Ra, Dumela Mma" she even sings in Tswana somewhere there, and voila...the show is watched even in the UK. So Jennifer will definately learn some few  Xhosa words.

And like Tholi I've never heard Winnie speaking Xhosa

and that is why the Number 1's detective was so big. because we got Jill Scott. even though we felt that there were more South Africans, we just accepted that it was a way of marketing our country. we have a long way to go in terms of performing arts.

Whoopi Goldberg, did Sarafinawith Mbongeni Ngema and it made a huge successin the whole world. I really agree with Tshd21 and SistaBB.ITS GREAT BUSINESS TO CAST Jen Yep - They never made any fuss abt Taye Diggs in Drum...why now?

What is Florence Masebe doing now that she's not on Muvhango?? And that tata she was with on morning live is always complaining - i've never seen him talk about anything positive - if its not money its something else - is he the crew leader or something...wenza is'cefe mani

i don't see anyonein SA being a right person for this role...yes Jen would be good on the role & for business too but i think we've got great ppl in SA who can play the role - the likes of Nthati Moshesh, Bonnie Henna (she did great in Catch a Fire) ...baninzi bethuna...

Authentic View -I like the angle you took on this and for some reason you changed my mind about the whole thing...It doesnt matter to me who get the role as long as the person given the role do justice to it...Her being a superstar is a chery on top for the creator because that could be adventous in terms of box office.people should stop with their patronage ish and wake up to realise that at the end of the day is about money.Somehow peple are trying to politicise this thing..Darrel is investing money and time in the whole and he should reap the rewards

I want Terry Pheto as Winnie... whether she brings in the money or not, we will have to wait and see

What boggles my mind is that even a renowned actor as John Kani is supporting this absurd notion. the financiers of the movie need are aiming for optimum sales, thus they are opting for a international star. Isnt that simple logic to any business?

I can just imagine umam'Mara Louw playing the Winnie character..

I so agree guys, at the end of the day business is business. Tsotsi won an Oscar but did not make a profit. Leleti Khumalo has an international profile (thanks to Sarafina and to Whoopi indirectly) and Darrel has used her in his movies. I am not sure how these performed at the box office.

Jen is the future - she has a strong brand internationally - her music and movie roles.  Nam' if I was investing in this movie I'd want to see returns, who has money to burn for fun??

Abo-Florence must club together with other actresses and produce their own movies then maybe they will get bigger roles etc. Rapula (Jerusalema and White Wedding) is doing it, soon Hollywood will be knocking on his door...
