Portia out and about with writer, gal pal and actress Bongi Ndaba.
Portia Gumede's bringing another of her dream projects to the small screen. It's taken over three years but it's happening and starts on SABC1 next Thursday (8 September) at 22h30.
It's called Shreds and Dreams and it's a four part mini-series based on a play that Portia starred in at the Market Theatre. It's written by Bongi Ndaba and was directed for the Market by Clare Stopford.
SABC1 bought the rights to the play way back in 2008 and Portia and Bongi started working on it then. Portia spoke about it when I
chatted to her about her series
Izingane zoBaba that was on at the time.
Bongi - who played Thembeka on Izingane zoBaba - and Portia have been gal pals since they were at tech and have worked on various projects together.
flashback
Portia: ... I acted in it as a play and I just fell in love with it and wanted to make a series.
They'd already started production on it at the time - and were hoping for a 2010 premiere. It's taken longer and now it's arrived.
The series is about three young women who've grown up in a rural area and feel trapped and judged. They move to the city to find independence and freedom and find that they can't escape their past.
Headliners in it include Linda Sokhulu, Lerato Mvelase, Gugu Masondo, Melusi Yeni and Baby Cele.
