TVSA can reveal that MultiChoice has no plans to respond to TopTV's prepaid service with a prepaid service for DStv. If anything the satcaster seems dead set against it.
TopTV introduced
a prepaid service in August this year which gives viewers the option of paying for access to TopTV services in advance, using vouchers. The process works the same way as buying prepaid airtime for phonecalls.
Will DStv be implementing anything similar? We asked MultiChoice CEO for South Africa Collins Khumalo who told us:
"We believe that our model works for us and that's a model that works on a global scale. It's not a model that we believe lends itself properly for pay-tv so I think we'd like to watch their space but from our side we're comfortable with our business plan."
From the sounds of it MultiChoice doesn't believe that it's going to work for TopTV as a business strategy so it's going to be interesting to see whether or not it does.
What's the business plan for DStv? If all the current promos are anything to by it looks as if the strategy involves getting as many people as possible onto debit orders.
