25-year-old entrepreneur Marian De Vos was voted out Survivor two weeks ago after garnering a reputation for being a manipulator. Amanda Hoosen caught up with her to find out how she feels about the title. Here's what she had to say:
Amanda: Marian, you are undoubtedly Survivor SA’s biggest villain! Did you go into the game planning to take on the role of the villain and are you comfortable with that title? Marian: I did not go into the game with the intention of being a villain. I knew I wanted to play hard and be memorable - those were the only intentions I had. Survivor is one game you cannot pre-determine, and when I landed on that island I knew I had to leave Marian on the raft.
I find the title of Villain quite interesting. To be honest, I rather enjoy it. They say well behaved women rarely make history. No seriously, I am the furthest thing from a villain but everyone needs a little alter ego right?
Amanda: How has your family reacted to some of your antics captured on-screen? For example, hiding Zan’s pants and lying to his face about it? Marian: Amanda I am all for making good television. My family thinks I need my own reality show lol! They are able to distinguish between the game and who I am so they thoroughly enjoy my antics!
As for hiding shorts, he should have NEVER let that water monitor go. WE WERE STARVING and secondly he should have shared the hammock. He can be lucky I never burnt them (Zan if you reading this I hope you found new black shorts darling - if not let's go shopping...)
Amanda: You’re funny lol! As a fellow Survivor fanatic, I am sure that you understand that it absolutely infuriated me when he quit. Moreso, the reason why he quit upset me the most. He didn’t want to kill for food to survive but then complained that he wasn’t consuming enough calories. And he was missing his girlfriend. Do you feel, as I do, that he robbed someone of a spot on this show who would have truly relished the experience? Marian: I do feel he robbed someone of a spot on the show but don't think he came with the intention of quitting! Being stranded on an Island is not an easy thing. Its draining and can break anyone! He wasn't fully mentally prepared and that's what got the better of him.
Amanda: You obviously had no problem stealing an idol from Gena. I know that lying is part of the game that everyone expects but do you think stealing should also be expected in the game? Marian: Can I just put this "stealing of the idol to rest". I did not steal Gena's idol. I merely said we should check if she has it. Just like Gena searched David's bag to see if he had the Idol - I wanted to do the same! Let's rather talk about how gorgeous Nico's eyes are ...
Amanda: Hahaha ... But surely you can’t claim that you weren’t part and parcel of the stealing of Gena’s idol? Isn’t that the same thing that Stephen did i.e. had everyone else do the dirty work but wanted to keep his hands clean? You even said it at tribal council: “There is no rule in Survivor that says you cannot steal an idol”. It did not sound like your stance was that you did not steal Gena’s idol during that tribal council. No? Marian: I'm not denying I played a part in the idol theft but I had no idea Shane was going to actually steal it. I thought we were flushing it out... Basically what I'm trying to clear up is that I did not scratch in her personal belongings! Stephen, Sivu, Sonette, David, Shane and I all played a part.
Amanda: Moving on, Survivor USA’s Russel Hantz tweeted you the other day. He has quite the reputation playing this game! Did you model your game somewhat after his?Marian: I did not model my game around Russell Hantz however I do believe he should have won Survivor twice - he's a phenomenal player - in fact he's Survivor Royalty. So being compared to him is a testament that I played hard.
Amanda: Do you think that Shane always acted in your best interests, especially at the tribal council where you were voted out? I mean, at that moment, did you really believe that he “lost” an idol and was giving another away out of the kindness of his heart for you? Marian: I don't doubt Shane's loyalty to me, never have and never will ... He's a stand-up guy and anyone who knows him or who will still have the pleasure of getting to know him will agree with me ... Shane did care for me (and NO we never had any romantic involvement - let's just clear that up). As for the "lost" idol, stay tuned to the up and coming episodes. The mystery around it will unravel.
Amanda: I know you don’t have any regrets playing this game, however, if you could have done anything differently, what would that be? Marian: I have no regrets but if I could do anything differently I would have told Sivu to approach Val instead of Buhle... also I would have drank more Hunters at our reward challenge lol
Amanda: When you were voted out, what was the first meal you ate? Marian: The first thing I ate was Oreos and it’s so ironic because I don't generally have a sweet tooth but I chowed about 10 Oreos in one go. When I landed back in Johannesburg I had Nandos at 7am. I swear my mouth had a massive party.
Amanda: Who do you think is least likely to win the game?
Marian: Least likely to win the game? mmm I guess myself since I was voted out - but well done to the remaining contestants - if I were them I would have voted myself out too.
Amanda: I know that you have wanted to play this game for years and years. Was the experience everything you hope for?
Marian: Survivor has been everything I expected and so much more... 13 years of waiting to be part of this show was so worth it! I love and respect this game so much... I cannot wait to play again and again and again (hint hint MNET hook a sister up)!
