A new fitness show starring movement maestro Khabonina Qubeka premieres on eKasi+ on OpenView HD tonight (20 May) at 19h00.
It's called Gym eKasi and follows Khabodacious as she shares advice and ideas on getting fit and staying healthy, with a focus on people living in a Kasi.
It's filmed on location so Khabonina hooks up with people, gives them advice, puts them through their paces etc. She also chats to medical and fitness experts to get advice, info. and so on.
Which is what I did with her. I hooked up with Khabodacious recently and asked her to share her Top 3 exercise tips with us. I've already used the first one and found it most helpful. As you'll see, it's the sort of thing you think you might know but in my case, I didn't know it
properly.
Khabo's tips are as follows:
Tip #1 "Always choose an exercise that you enjoy! You can find any exercise that you enjoy, it doesn't have to be conventional, there's no
one way to do it. You have to stay motivated."
Tip #2 "Have a soundtrack for
you. Something that inspires you while you're exercising, that keeps you going."
Tip #3 "If you have a gym partner, that's great. You can keep each other motivated but then it mustn't be that you don't exercise if they can't make it. Be your own cheerleader.
"Sometimes it'll happen that you have days where you're feeling down. Where you're feeling, 'Oh, my goodness, I can't do this today, I can't do this tomorrow,' but you need to pick yourself up and be your own cheerleader."
Bonus tip: "Wear a comfortable outfit - you don't have to be trendy. Maybe you can set a trend by wearing your ripped top."
Besides Gym eKasi, Khabonina's also been filming a new SABC1 political thriller called Ihawu Lesizwe. It looks at what
really happened after 1994, when South Africa first became a democracy. I don't know if it's based on truth or not but I think it's fiction.
Khabonina plays a Thuli Madonsela-type character. The series is provisionally scheduled to start on SABC1 on Thursday, 17 July at 20h30.
Catching up with Khabonina made me wonder about why she bothers to exercise at all. She really dashes around a
lot. Besides the two TV shows, her exercise DVDs, her Tweeting, her running her website, needing to eat in between and see friends, she also recently finished filming a movie called Dora's Peace.
With that sort of output you'd think she'd never need to go to gym ever. I'm thinking it must have something to do with the mental break exercise gives you or something.
Khabonina plays Dora in Dora's Peace - a Hillbrow prostitute who meets a young boy called Peace who's a very talented artist. Dora meets him, protects him and together they go on a journey involving self-discovery and peace.
