SIV NGESI FLIES OUT OF STRICTLY COME DANCING
Cape Town comedian Siv Ngesi’s journey on Season 7 of SABC3’ hit reality dance show
Strictly Come Dancing ended on Saturday night (16 August 2014).
The funnyman with the pearly white smile failed to win over the judges when he found himself in the bottom three on Saturday night’s results show after performing his Foxtrot/Rumba to Come Fly With Me by Michael Buble, becoming the fourth celebrity to leave the show.
Team Sivella (the moniker comes from the combination of Siv and his dance partner Marcella Solimeo’s first names) landed up in the bottom two against singer LeAnne Dlamini and her partner Johannes following the combination of the viewers’ and judges’ votes.
It was the third time in the series that Team Sivella ended up in the position - but this time the judges decided to save series sweetheart LeAnne, who had danced the Quickstep/ Jive combination to Reet Petite by Jackie Wilson.
“I didn’t get to take my shirt off at least once, so this is very disappointing,” quipped the comedian after the elimination, going on to mention he was dedicating his performance to someone he knew who had been raped and killed two days previously.
The results show was the culmination of two days of foot-tapping entertainment as the series introduced a new dance format, fusion, which saw the contestants combine two different styles in their performances.
First to step on the dance floor was Khanyi Mbau, who wowed the judges with her combination of the Foxtrot and the Rumba with her partner Quintus to Katie Perry’s Roar, with Tebogo Kgobokoe coo-ing, “Khanyi you are back! You were on fire!”
Former rugby player John Mametsa and his partner Nombulelo also found favour with the judges for their Quickstep/Jive fusion to Home Talk by Mango Groove while the judges were divided in their comments on Siv and Marcella’s performance.
Michael Wentick described their routine - which saw Siv dressed as a pilot and Marcella a flight attendant - as “kinda on flight mode” when it started.
Both LeAnne and Johannes’ Quickstep/Jive combo and actress Leandie Du Randt’s Tango/Rumba with her partner Brandon to the Lana Del Ray hit Young and Beautiful were fawned over by the judges.
Things got heated when Isidingo actor Ashish Gangapersad and his partner Lindsey did their Quickstep/Jive to In The Mood by Glenn Miller, with Michael saying “I don’t think quality-wise you are in the same place as most of the other contestants”.
The night saw Top Billing hunk Jonathan Boynton-Lee thrill the audience in his James Bond themed Tango/Rumba fusion with partner Hayley to Golden Eye by Tina Turner which saw him strip off his shirt.
“The change from week one is so spectacular,” commended judge Samantha Peo while Michael gushed, “Wow! I felt like I was in the movie. You played the role very well.”
‘
Strictly SA’ is broadcast on SABC3 every Friday at 20h00 and the results show on Saturdays after the 19h00 news.
