Oscar Trial: evidence overlooked?
During the Oscar Pistorius trial, forensic blood stain pattern analysis of the crime scene was found to support Oscar’s version of events after the shooting. Yet, no blood stain pattern analysis relevant to events before the shooting was presented to the court.
Now, re-analysis of pictures of the crime scene made public during the trial have led to the suggestion that curious patterns observed in the blood in the toilet bowl could mean that the toilet was flushed seconds before Reeva was shot. Carte Blanche asks: could both the prosecution and defence perhaps have overlooked crucial evidence?

Riah Phiyega
Police commissioner Riah Phiyega could face the axe, following recommendations in reports on Marikana that she should be charged or face remedial action. But Phiyega is standing firm and it’s believed that she has already asked Zuma for a second chance after submitting her response to the president.
Nine Provincial Commissioners have openly pledged their support for her, but insiders reveal a serious lack of respect from senior police members she leads. Carte Blanche asks whether a political appointee can ever be fit to hold office as National Police Commissioner?

Magic Mushrooms
Capetonian Monica Cromhout regularly breaks the law. She’s been holding illegal mushroom ceremonies at her home for several years. Psychotropic mushrooms are banned in South Africa and elsewhere and classed with other hard drugs.
Yet, participants in her Soma (spirit of the mushroom) ceremonies and others who use so-called psilocybin, report remarkable health benefits. Carte Blanche investigates.

Trial by Social Media
Lion killer Walter Palmer has faced a global public onslaught in what seems to have become a trial by social media. But the hue and cry over the death of Cecil the lion has resulted in drastic action and a revisit of trophy transporting policies and hunting regulations.
Carte Blanche asks if social media is just a platform for armchair activists worldwide to name and shame, or if it has the power to be a modern catalyst for change?

Carte Blanche is on Sundays at 19h00.
