Tom Cruise teams up again with his new pal Christopher McQuarrie - the same dude he worked with on Jack Reacher - to bring us the fifth installment of Ethan Hunt and his IMF team saving the world and i'd say this is one of the best Mission Impossible movies in a while. Let's dig in.
There's the usual action, humour, death defying stunts and Tom Cruise running. Yet, this, unlike the other MI movies actually does not rely on a McGuffin aka a plot device that is not totally explained but used to kick off the story - like they did last time with the "rabbit foot". This time the plot is well crafted and kicks in earlier than expected and never lets go till the credits roll.
Hunt is put up against some great antagonist in the form of Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust and then there's the Syndicate aka the anti-IMF group that keeps things interesting. Although this plot seems to be very close to the upcoming James Bond Spectre plot, it will be interesting to contrast the two once the latter makes it to the cinema, to see who told the same story better.
Back to Rogue Nations... the whole gang is back. Simon Pegg's Benji is still there, yapping and offering comedic relief at the expense of Ving Rhames and Jeremy Renners' screen time. But the others are not missed that much.
We have Alec Baldwin as the new addition to the franchise and kudos to Christopher McQuarrie, who not only co-wrote this but also directs - he has done a great job at balancing humour, action and tension without taking away from the drama of the story.
So, for a great night out, do check out Rogue Nations for your skiet, skop and donner fix.
