South Africans have been strutting their stuff in Tinseltown this year and Louise Barnes-Boraine is the latest to represent.
Louise, who starred as Donna Hardy on Scandal! and Miranda Barlow on History channel's Black Sails, made the move to Los Angeles with her actor husband Nick Boraine this year and she's landed a role on the popular cable series Outsiders.
None of our local channels air it unfortunately - *
side-eye to DStv* - but it's a hit in the US for cable network WGN America.
The first season aired in March this year and averaged
2.8 million viewers per episode (Live + 7). It was renewed while it was airing and returns for Season 2 on 24 January 2017 with Louise as one of the new characters.
The show centres round an extended family, the Farrell clan - the Outsiders. They live an isolated life in the Appalachia hills in Kentucky and the series follows their struggle to keep their home and power. They've got a deadly streak - with some madmen amongst them - which has kept them in control so far.
Enter Louise to shake things up.
I had a chinwag with her to find out more and the role sounds like a rip to play:
Tashi: Can you tell us about your role as Moregon? Who is she?
Louise: Moregon is the leader of a tribe called the Kinnah living totally off the grid in the Appalachian Mountains. They are deeply rooted to the earth and have lived wild without any help from “civilization” for many generations.
She’s strong and uncompromising and passionate about how she has chosen to live. And she’s a bit of a bad ass!
She arrives at the Farrell’s camp and upsets the power balance. It’s unclear what her motivations are... in that way I guess she has the same kind of mystery around her that Mrs. Barlow had. But that is where any similarity begins and ends!
Tashi: How many episodes are you in?
Louise: I’m in 6 episodes. I filmed in Pittsburgh on the east coast so have managed to rack up some nice air miles!
Louise and Nick
Tashi: Have you moved to Los Angeles permanently?
Louise: We decided we needed a change and an adventure and had some opportunities in LA after the success of Black Sails so we took the leap and are loving it. And as long as we love it we’ll be here.
Tashi: What’s life like there?
Louise: We chose to live on the Westside, Santa Monica close to the ocean so that’s incredible after living in Joburg for so long! The lifestyle is fantastic - we ride our bikes to the beach for a morning swim in the sea, run along the boardwalk that extends all the way along the coast, walk to the shops and the movies... we really are loving it and are very fortunate in the area we chose.
Our daughter is in a really beautiful school and we have a tight, awesome group of friends which helps with the homesickness that is inevitable with a move like this.
