Lucky Dumisa | Anga Makubalo
Lucky Dumisa. Rapist. Drink spiker. The psycho who's been preying on Isithembiso's girls in the show's current date rape storyline.
It paints a terrifying picture of the realities that women face and how easy it is for men to get away with such evil, as we've seen through Palesa & Co.'s fierce attempts to expose Lucky.
I'm lucky enough to be married to a man who's extremely sensitive to the abuses that women face and he suffers deeply for it. He knows men are responsible and he hates men who abuse women.
With this in mind, I caught up with Anga Makubalo to chat to him about playing such an evil man as Lucky:
Tashi: What’s it been like playing him? You’ve needed to get into character to become him and yet you must despise him - how did you reconcile these two aspects to realise the character as realistically as possible?
Anga: It was quite an experience. Every time we’d shoot something intense I'd apologize to the ladies because I felt so bad. I apologized throughout my time shooting Lucky. Crazy. He is hectic...
Tashi: We know that there’s a scourge of Lucky’s in the real world… what's it like to be a decent man in a world filled with evil men like him?
Anga: Being a decent man is the only way to be, it’s how it should be. I know we are all (men) raised differently and act differently when grown up because of our past surroundings.
So the problem or decency may stem from how you grew up and what you were exposed to.
But DEEP DOWN. Every man has control over the situation and should make a decision that is going to save both his reputation and the girl's sanity.
Tashi: As a man who knows what men can be like, what advice do you have for women when it comes to date rape?
Anga: If you accept a drink, make sure you’re with the person who is buying it for you when he goes to the bar. Or even better, don’t accept drinks from strangers altogether.
Tashi: There are others (besides the attacker) who are responsible for date rape too - people who behave like Vivian who know what’s going on.
People who refuse to take a stand against it but do the opposite by taking the side of the rapist! What do you have to say to people like her?
Anga: The reputation of your business cannot be more important than the life of someone else. While you’re getting richer, the victims life changes forever and might never be the same again.
Consider that. People like Vivian can save so many girls just by putting business aside.
