These are the primetime adult television viewing figures for August 2019.

If you can't see the listing below, then click this link to access them in a document instead: Top Shows on TV: August 2019

Special notes

What percentage of South Africans actually watched Miss South Africa on Friday, 9 August 2019 (Women's Day)?

We thought it would be interesting to do the calculations again this year. (You'll find last year's here: Top Shows on TV: May 2018)

As you'll see in the above documents, 471,906 viewers watched the pageant on Mzansi Magic this year.

This is 284,949 viewers less than in 2018.

According to Stats SA, the country's population reached 58.8 million in July this year which means that 0.8% of the population tuned in to watch it on Mzansi Magic.

It also aired on M-Net but the viewership wasn't high enough to make DStv's Top 30 list.

Unfortunately these limited TAMS documents don't show what the M-Net viewership was so we've based the number on the absolute maximum it could have been, which means the final figure isn't exact and is very probably lower.

The maximum viewership it could have attracted on M-Net was 414,198 viewers - one viewer below The Queen Repeat, at the bottom of the DStv list.

The final calculation looks like this:

Mzansi Magic viewers 471,906
Maximum viewers who who could have watched it on M-Net 414,198
Total maximum viewership 886,104

886,104 viewers is 1,5% percent of the population.

I wonder what is the method that is used to count people while watching their tv, they must rather say 3m active tv around that time

@goku i think it's like that. E.g 6million active tv's 19:30 are on etv channel during scandal.

This is how they measure... they use special measurement devices to measure the ratings and these devices are placed in sample households round the country e.g. if one of the households starts watching The Queen, the device picks this up.

There aren't millions of households in the sample group so they use complicated calculations to work out the overall number i.e. if 600 households in the sample group are watching The Queen and 50 watch Isidingo, these numbers are then processed to reflect overall viewership in the country.

There's been a lot of controversy over these sample groups in the past. In 2013 e.tv and SABC argued that the sample groups weren't properly reflective of the country's demographic so these sample groups went through a shake-up with long-time sample households being removed and replaced with new ones.

Here's a link to their statement at the time: Shocker! SABC and e.tv ditch SAARF TV ratings

One of the changes that resulted from this is that the sample group increased from 1700 households to 2500, consisting of approximately 9,500 people. By 2016 these had increased to 2900 households.

Here's a link to an article we did about it: TAMS back on track with universe update

Ultimately the TAMS as we know them now will have to go through a major overhaul because they only record live TV watching i.e. people watching as the show airs.

The landscape's changing so quickly with Catch-Up services, YouTube, Viu etc that they're going to have to find a way of representing these too in the overall picture.

still a little bit confused but thank you TVSA

Goku - pleasure.  Yes, the viewership numbers in the documents reflect the number of active TVs tuned into a particular show.

These are taken from sample groups and the sample groups are used to represent the whole country.

TVSA can you please find out why there is a break on Ray Donovan season 6 after only 4 episodes in?  I was under the impression that the main reason they stopped the express broadcast for most series was so that when we eventually get to watch the series we would watch the full season without interruptions and breaks as production breaks and the like would not affect us in this scenario.  Ray Donovan season 6 concluded mid-January already in the States, its an old season, we should be watching the whole thing without interruptions.

For sure Timone, they stopped express for that very reason. We'll find out what's going on.

I'm not surprised by the poor performance of Miss SA - it's what happens when a beauty pageant tries to hijack a national holiday!

I tried my luck on their Facebook page and this is their response:

“Due to the Emmy's build up the channel will air Game of Thrones season 1-7 Monday to Sunday. The series has the most nominations for Emmy Awards hence the schedule change. This means shows like Ray Donovan, Better Call Saul, Legacies etc. will take a scheduling break until October.”

Incredible!

It's madness! As if those shows aren't also Emmy nominees and winners!

And they wonder why the Premium subscriptions are dropping, Supersport is really their saving grace.
