Deputy

Channel: Universal TV (DStv 117)
TX Time: 20h00
Genre: Police Procedural, Western, Drama

Deputy

Deputy aims to bring the spirit of a classic Western and a gritty authenticity to the modern cop drama.

When the Los Angeles County's Sheriff dies, an arcane rule forged back in the Wild West thrusts the most unlikely man into the job: a fifth-generation lawman (Stephen Dorff), more comfortable taking down bad guys than navigating a sea of politics, who won't rest until justice is served.

In the series premiere, "Graduation Day": When Los Angeles' newly elected Sheriff dies, Bill Hollister (Dorff) is suddenly propelled into the role leading one of the largest police forces in the world.

Only interested in justice, Bill commands a county-wide crew of LA's finest, including Deputy Cade Ward, Deputy Brianna Bishop and Deputy Joseph Harris.

The dangers of the job often lead to the LA County General Hospital, where Bill frequently has run-ins with Dr. Paula Reyes, the hospital's chief trauma surgeon... and his wife.

The Plot Against America

Channel: M-Net (DStv 101)
TX Time: 22h05
Genre: Drama, Miniseries

The Plot Against America

A limited series based on the acclaimed Philip Roth novel of the same name, The Plot Against America imagines an alternate American history during World War II.

The story is told through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in New Jersey as they endure the political rise of Charles Lindbergh, an aviator-hero and xenophobic populist, who captures the presidency and turns the nation toward fascism.

The series stars Zoe Kazan (The Deuce) as Elizabeth "Bess" Levin, an insightful mother and homemaker who fears for the future as she tries to protect her family amid the escalating political climate.

Morgan Spector (Boardwalk Empire) stars as Herman Levin, her proud and opinionated husband who works as an insurance agent and tries to maintain normalcy and assert himself as an American citizen, even as his country seems to be slipping into fascism, anti-Semitism and xenophobic isolationism.

Also starring is Winona Ryder (Stranger Things) as Evelyn Finkel, the unmarried, older sister to Bess whose own plans were arrested by years of caring for her infirm mother and is hungry to find her own place in life.

John Turturro (The Night Of) plays Rabbi Lionel Bengelsdorf, a politically conservative rabbi transplanted from Charleston, S.C. who seizes the reins of history to become a key figure in the emergent Lindbergh administration.

Anthony Boyle (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) stars as Alvin Levin, the angry orphaned nephew who allows his own sense of injustice and political differences with his Uncle Herman to carry him from the streets of Newark to the battlefields of Europe and then back again.

Azhy Robertson (Marriage Story) as 10-year-old Philip Levin, the youngest of the Levin clan who copes with his own innocent curiosity and growing anxiety in a world that seems to be collapsing around him.

Rounding out the starring cast is Caleb Malis (Blood Widow) as Sandy Levin, the Levin's artistic teenage son who rebels against his parents as his adolescence becomes entangled with his growing admiration for Lindbergh.

Supporting cast includes David Krumholtz (Numb3rs) as Monty Levin, the overbearing successful older brother of Herman whose sole focus is on running his wholesale produce business.

Michael Kostroff (The Wizard of Lies) plays Shepsie Tirschwell, the realistic and cautious Newsreel Theater projectionist.

Also recurring is Jacob Laval (Team Marco) as Seldon Wishnow, Philip's geeky, introverted neighbour who is unaware of the increasingly violent political atmosphere.

The series begins the narrative on the eve of the 1940 election cycle, as the two-term Presidential incumbent Franklin Roosevelt, as professional a politician as a democracy can produce, suddenly finds himself challenged by a political outsider.

Lindbergh has won fame through his legendary solo flight across the Atlantic 13 years earlier and is, in the minds of many Americans, among the country's greatest heroes.

But the election contest becomes much more fraught for the residents of Newark's Jewish enclave of Weequahic when Lindbergh stakes his insurgent campaign on the promise that he will keep America out of the European war, that he will remain neutral between Nazi Germany and the Allied powers, and most controversially, he names American Jews as being war instigators and disloyal to the true interests of America.

The anti-Semitism and xenophobia strike a chord with many Americans, who begin to regard fellow countrymen and outsiders alike with suspicion.

Trial by Media looks juicy - I hope someone does something about the media's role in COVID-19 once we all pick ourselves up after the pandemic.

Hey Tashi, I finished Gentleman Jack. Great performances by all but our lead is exceptional in the role. Although I nearly abondened the show halfway in because of that Ann Walker character

Hey Timone - coolness!

Re- Ann,  - ja, she became highly annoying in how oppressed she was by convention, despite having such an ally in the fight against it. It made her cruel to Anne -  such a moper too!

I guess realistically speaking her protrayal is very true to the time they were living in, I mean its now nearly two centuries later and people are still afraid of unconventional love, so in that aspect it was very realistic and also that the show is based on true events but unforturnately we mostly watch these shows to be entertained, so they could have found a way of informing the audience about their struggles as a couple without actually taking us through that painful process and rather used a chunk of that time dedicated to the courtship to show us more of Anne kicking ass as on the business front.

>>I guess realistically speaking her protrayal is very true to the time they were living in, I mean its now nearly two centuries later and people are still afraid of unconventional love<<

Definitely ... especially because they were at the forefront of standing up against the oppression. I see that wikipedia names her and Anne Lister as the first known women in England to have a same-sex marraige.

Whenever I think about it, I freak out at the thought of how archaic things still are. Wikipedia's page on "same sex intercouse" is terrifying when you see how many places still regard it as illegal and punishable in violent, barbaric ways.

I can't get my head around it... it's insane that so many people think they have a right to tell others what their sexuality should be and force them - when we're all born with our own!

It's too much too comprehend.

I suppose we had to see that painful part of AnnAnne to understand it properly.

Still, she could have moped less.

Timone

Definitely could have moped less!

Otherwise it is very sad and disheartning that as a species we have advanced and evolved so much but when it comes to this we have not progressed much farther from where we were a couple of centuries back.

I hope there'll be more development on the Sowdens' storyline next season (the pigfest family) angel

Until season 2 then

Ha, looks like there will be. Here's some perspective from the creator about the season: Gentleman Jack Season 2

Hasn't been filmed yet because of COVID - was supposed to start in June but now looks like September instead.

Brace yourself: there's gonna be a lot of Ann 'cos the season's going to explore the power dynamics between them once they move in together.

Hopefully she loses the mope now that she's come out. She'll clearly be difficult in other ways though, especially as she holds the purse strings - interesting what the creator says about this in the article.

Hear-hear! ... until Season 2. It's gonna take a while, probs only in 2021, but at least it's something to look forward to.

Thank you for the scoop Tashi!  2021 is still okey by me, I still have a lot of shows to binge but I agree its definitely something to look forward to
