Extinction: The Facts
Channel: S3
TX Time: 21h00
Genre: Wildlife, Nature, Documentary
Sir David Attenborough investigates the extinction crisis, exploring what's driving the rapid loss of animals and plants and revealing potential solutions to this global issue.
In just over 40 years animal populations have shrunk by 60% - a million species of plants and animals now face extinction, many within decades if urgent action isn't taken.
Why is this happening?
David explores the man-made reasons behind the crisis, including hunting, toxic waste and the conversion of land for agriculture.
He reveals the changes that could make a difference like responsible consumption, cutting back on meat and lowering carbon emissions.
The natural clock can be turned back - if we don't leave it too late.
Last year, with the support of the United Nations, more than 500 scientists set out to investigate the current state of the natural world.
They found that biodiversity is being lost at rates not seen before in human history. This means one million species are now threatened with extinction.
Extinction is a natural process, but what's happening now is different. Extinction is happening up to 100 times faster than the natural evolutionary rate.
We meet the last two Northern white rhinoceroses on the planet, a species on the brink of extinction.
The programme explores how this crisis is about more than the loss of individual species.
The evidence is that the loss of biodiversity now threatens our own wellbeing.
Everything in nature is connected in networks that support the whole of life on earth, and we are part of that.
We are losing many of the services that nature provides for us.
The loss of insects puts pollination and food production at risk, the loss of biodiversity in the soil threatens plant growth.
Plants themselves underpin almost everything that we need, and yet one in four are threatened with extinction.
Extinction: The Facts looks at the different ways we are driving the loss of biodiversity.
The illegal wildlife trade, overfishing, climate change, pollution and land use change are all threatening the delicate balance of our world.
And the programme reveals how this destructive relationship with the natural world is even putting us at greater risk of pandemics.
As we rebuild our economies the programme looks at what can now be done to stop the loss of biodiversity and make the planet a safer place for all its inhabitants.
The evidence is that if the right choices are made at this critical moment nature can bounce back.
When Sir David visited the mountain gorillas of Rwanda 40 years ago there were around 250 individuals left.
They were on the brink of extinction, but decades of effort from conservationists, governments and the local community mean there are now over 1,000 mountain gorillas, including the descendants of those David met.
As he observes in the documentary, we do have the chance of creating a better and safer future - and what happens next is up to every one of us.
