ABOUT
AMC Networks International rebranded the MGM Channel as AMC (also known as AMC Africa to avoid confusion with the American counterpart) from 1 December, 2014, across sub-Saharan Africa.
The African launch was part of the global rollout of AMC and also offered AMC VOD and "TV Everywhere" services to multiple devices. AMC launched with platform partners DStv, StarSat, Zuku and Azam TV.
AMC showcases some of the most critically acclaimed and award-winning dramas on U.S. television including The Walking Dead, Mad Men and Breaking Bad.
The channel offers exclusive original series from AMC Studios, including (at launch) the premiere of The Divide, a gritty legal thriller centered on a sensational murder case; and Game of Arms, an unscripted series exploring the highly competitive world of American arm-wrestling.
The channel also features movies from some of the world's biggest film libraries including the MGM library.
With the introduction of AMC to the African market, the aim was to satisfy the local audience's growing appetite for high-quality international content including original series as well as a wide selection of popular Hollywood movies.
Other series to air on the channel include the western Hell on Wheels (which previously aired on FOX in South Africa) and the Walking Dead spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, which aired within 10 minutes of the US premiere.
AMC Africa was closed to DStv subscribers on 31 October, 2016, but continued to broadcast on StarSat.
