The series premiered on SABC3 on Saturday 10 October 2009, at 18h30. New episodes air weekly. There are 13 half-hour episodes in the series.
Synopsis
On Wednesday morning, 19 November, 2008 at 6am an expedition team consisting of six South Africans sets out on a journey like no other.
It is an adventure that will take them to the most vast and beautiful wilderness on Earth where they will experience the extreme natural wonders of the Southern Oceans and Antarctica.
Lintle Letele, an aspiring hiphop generation film maker; Matt Rosmarin, an extreme sport enthusiast eager to explore foreign places; and Sthembile Mhlongo, a journalist and a poet with an insatiable zest for life will go where few South Africans have been before them, documenting every trial and every triumph, introducing a new generation to Antarctica.
Tracking their adventure will be Urban Brew Studios' Harry Hofmeyr (director), Hans Visser (camera man and editor) and Stafford Robinson (DoP).
Their hosts are the crew and expedition leaders onboard the MV Polar Star, an ex-icebreaker that was retrofitted and upgraded specifically for expedition cruising in 2000.
The ship belongs to Polar Star Expeditions, a Canadian-based company with over 100 years of vessel operations in the Polar Regions.
Commissioned by SABC3 the expedition team will depart from Ushuaia, South America, the southernmost village in the world whose claim to fame is that it is located at "the end of the world and the beginning of everything".
On heir floating home, the MV Polar Star, they follow the epic trail of explorer Ernest Shackleton, to the Falkland Islands.
Next on their route is South Georgia where King Penguins and Fur Seals play at the foot of the Bertrab Glazier.
Finally they cross the Scotia Sea once again, braving the icy winds and rolling with the heavy swell, as they travel back towards the Antarctic Peninsula through the treacherous Drake passage.
It is a treacherous and deceiving place where freezing cold and massive storms can set upon a ship in an instant. Many explorers have met their end at the mercy of mother nature at her most furious.
Antarctica deserves respect, and in return men and women will experience life like nowhere else on the planet. Desolate islands, mountains of ice, high seas - these are just some of the natural wonders that await our team as they journey to the bottom of the world and discover themselves along the way.
The team's objective is the making of a television documentary/reality series, Oceans 3. The series will highlight the reality of climate change as global warming becomes more unpredictable and extreme, and the importance of the Southern Oceans (in which South Africa plays an important scientific role).
Antarctica is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its gigantic icebergs, vast mountain ranges and islands are truly amazing to behold. The largest desert and the last great wilderness on the planet, it's a place of extremes; serene yet savage, on a scale that is almost unfathomable.
What happens on our planet is reflected in Antarctica. It is time to see the world, glorious and suffering.
Join the Oceans 3 as they journey deep into the freezer.
