You're the Worst is an American romantic comedy television series created by Stephen Falk which revolves around Jimmy, a self-involved writer and Gretchen, a self-destructive Los Angeles PR executive, as these two toxic personalities attempt a relationship.
Narcissistic, brash, and self-destructive Jimmy Shive-Overly, played by Chris Geere (The Spa), thinks all relationships are doomed. Cynical, people-pleasing and stubborn Gretchen Cutler, played by Aya Cash (Traffic Light), knows that relationships aren't for her.
So when they meet at a wedding, it's only natural that the two of them go home together and, despite their better judgment, begin to find themselves falling for each other.
Rounding out the cast is Desmin Borges (The Good Wife) who plays Edgar Quintero, Jimmy's once homeless, war veteran roommate; and Kether Donohue (The Carrie Diaries) as Lindsay Jillian, Gretchen's best friend and former partner in crime who's now struggling with a life of domesticity.
You're the Worst is a modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven't been very successful with either. It's the story of Gretchen and Jimmy, fear, heartbreak, romance, sex, food, Los Angeles, friendship, and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners.
The series is produced by FX Productions and was created by Stephen Falk, who also serves as writer and executive producer. You're the Worst is distributed by 20th Century Fox Television Distribution.
Main Characters
Jimmy (Chris Geere)
A brash, self-destructive narcissist with selective face-blindness, Jimmy is a British novelist living in Los Angeles. His hotly-anticipated first book — a semi-autobiographical tale of a father and son reconnecting — was a minor critical darling, even if sales were less than stellar.
Jimmy has been burned by relationships in the past and has thus written them off completely. He instead chooses to focus his energies on scotch, aggressively foisting his opinions upon others, and writing his next book, which isn't as easy as he thought it would be.
Jimmy's crafted a very controlled lifestyle that allows him to stay firmly in his comfort zone; that lifestyle is quickly side-lined when Gretchen enters his life.
Gretchen (Aya Cash)
Cynical, stubborn, and fundamentally dishonest, Gretchen manages to defy expectations with everything she does. Gretchen handles PR for some of the biggest, and most difficult, music acts in town, so she knows how to hold her own.
She's never been in a real relationship and is perfectly happy with that, so when she meets Jimmy and finds herself falling for him, her whole world-view is turned on its head.
Gretchen never ceases to surprise Jimmy, who finds himself quickly succumbing to her charming abrasiveness. She may be the only person in the world who's suited to handle, and possibly fall in love with, Jimmy.
Edgar (Desmin Borges)
Edgar used to be Jimmy's pot dealer in college, but the two lost touch when Edgar joined the army and did a couple tours in Iraq. Now back home, Edgar finds himself grappling with PTSD and searching for his place in the world.
He and Jimmy reconnected a few years ago when Jimmy found him living on the streets. Now Edgar lives with Jimmy rent-free. In exchange, Edgar does light housework and cooks all of Jimmy's meals. Though Jimmy would be the last to admit it, Edgar has become his closest (and probably only) friend.
Lindsay (Kether Donohue)
Lindsay is down for literally anything, making her the perfect wing-woman and, more often than not, enabler. She's a chronic over-eater who's desperately trying to fit in with the skinny Westside L.A. housewife crowd and failing miserably.
Lindsay and Gretchen have been best friends their whole lives; they've spent many a night drunkenly partying and fuelling each other's bad impulses.
But now, Lindsay is married to a boring banker, struggling with domesticity, and longing for the debaucherous adventures she and Gretchen used to have.
