The Republic is a South African television drama series which revolves around the fictitional president of South Africa - Lufuno Mulaudzi - as she fights the corruption wrought upon the country by her predecessor.
In 2009, when president Kgalema Motlanthe's term in office ended, he was replaced by President Hendrik Mbuli, whose presidency was riddled with corruption and looting of state funds.
Mbuli was fired from government, making way for the party's secretary Lufuno to take the reins as president, leading to a tense political showdown and a story of political smarts and survival.
The series starts with President Mulaudzi having spent the last two years fighting corruption and prosecuting those who benefitted from Mbuli's presidency – including Mbuli himself.
In the first season Florence Masebe stars as President Lufuno; Warren Masemola stars as Thabang Manaka, a fallen hero trying to make amends for his past mistakes; while Masasa Mbangeni is Bridget Ranaka, a posh young woman from a rich family in Soshanguve.
The second season takes place two years after the events of Season 1 and President Mulaudzi has won a second term - but only at considerable sacrifice.
This season follows the aftermath of the kidnapping of President Mulaudzi and a coup attempt amidst genuine citizen unrest.
The second season focuses on two beautiful young South Africans who have felt all too personally the failure of government, as they strike back against the corruption that is eating away at the country.
They become a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, embraced by social media and South African society at large.
Can they give South Africans new hope in a dark time?
The two new young leads are played by Lemogang Tsipa as Sizwe and Noxolo Dlamini as Thina.
Reprising their lead roles for Season 2 are Florence Masebe as President Mulaudzi and Masasa Mbangeni as Bridget.
Joining the cast this season are Bonnie Mbuli, Bongile Mantsai, Thembi Nyandeni, Tsholo Mashishi and Chichi Letswalo.
