Avenger is a 2006 made-for-TV movie based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Frederick Forsyth.
A former Special Ops war hero sets up in business to take the scum out of business. But when the CIA get wind of what he's up to, the stakes are suddenly unbelievably high.
Avenger is a film about vengeance and international incidents. It's about justice, murder and secrets.
Sam Elliott is Cal Dexter, a lawyer in a little town, who also just happens to be a freelance avenging angel.
The fact that he's a former Special Forces operative doesn't hurt.
At least it doesn't hurt him; there is, however, plenty of pain to go around for his targets, people who have murdered Cal's clients' loved ones.
Cal's driven by his own grief for his dead wife and daughter. He's sworn to kill every heartless criminal and corrupt politician to see justice is done.
The problem with a job like that (apart from lacklustre pension options), is that sooner or later you're going to attract attention. And that's what happens while Cal's away on an overseas 'assignment'.
Except the people after him are worse than the bad guys - he's being tracked by the CIA. Suddenly a simple seek and destroy mission turns his world upside down.
Timothy Hutton co-stars as Frank McBride, the CIA operative who's been given the job of making Cal disappear. Cal's clever though and the chase will be a difficult one, but not unattractive.
