Season 4
Stokvels have been part of African culture for decades and are places where friends meet for companionship and good times and provide a social way of saving money.
Set in the vibey world of two stokvels - one in Diepkloof and one in Soweto - this fourth 26 episode season of Stokvel sees a return of all the past characters from previous seasons. They are:
Mojo Khumalo
Chairman of the men's stokvel, Majakathata.
Lerato Khumalo
Mojo's wife and treasurer of the women's society Sweet Harmony.
Masechaba Moletsane
The pastor's wife and chairperson of Sweet Harmony.
Hazel Dube
A local shebeen queen.
Ayanda Twala
Lerato's best friend and a township tour operator.
Pinkie Serobe
A sweet, naive and clueless party animal.
Budgets Naledi
Treasurer of Majakatha.
Biza
A member of Majakatha who never pays his contributions.
Mojo belongs to Majakathata - a stokie that's fallen on hard times. Besides himself, there are only two other regular members so the stokie account is always depressing.
This doesn't stop Mojo and his friends from constantly thinking of new ways to find new members to make more money. As treasurer of Majakathata Budgets Naleddi thinks he knows everything there is to know about finances but the stokie's books tell a different story and their funds aren't helped by Biza never paysing his contributions.
Biza's a character found in almost every stokie – the ‘baaidjievanger'. He never has money or a job and constantly finds new and more inventive ways to get other people to buy him a drink.
This fourth season finds Majakathata a new member - rugby playing Philane who's a big guy with an even bigger heart.
During the season the Khumalos deal with the arrival of their firstborn son who made his appearance at the end of the previous series. Mojo and Lerato have to deal with the challenges faced by new parents including lack of sleep, balancing work with family and over-enthusiastic grandparents.
Episodes include the discovery of some of Masechaba's secrets, major developments for Mojo at work and Biza being called home to become chief.
Budgets sets up his own night school, Ayanda tries her hand at shwashwi, Pinkie reveals her knowledge of French when she becomes Ayanda's translator and Majakathata finally gets a new member who they can hang on to in the form of rugby player Philane who's a big guy with an even bigger heart.
