Season 5
Stokvels have been a part of African culture for decades - a place where friends meet for companionship, good times and a social way of saving money. This institution is the backdrop for the continuing activities of two stokvels in Diepkloof, Soweto.
Stokvel 5 sees the ongoing adventures of the young professional couple, Mojo Khumalo and his beautiful wife, Lerata, and their respective stokvels.
Mojo is the chairman of the men's stokvel, Majakathata, and Lerata is the treasurer of the women's society Sweet Harmony.
Sweet Harmony is chaired by the pastor's wife Masechaba Moletsane (played by Dieketseng Mnisi, who replaces the late Limakatso Manotwane).
Other members include local shebeen queen, Hazel Dube and Ayanda Twala - a township tourism operator and Lerata's best friend.
There's also sweet, naïve (and rather clueless) Pinkie Serobe.
Mojo belongs to Majakathata - a stokie that has fallen on hard times. Besides himself, there are only two other regular members so the stokie account has always looked rather depressed.
This doesn't stop Mojo and his friends from constantly thinking of new ways to find new members and make more money.
Budgets Naledi is the treasurer of this group. He thinks he knows everything there is to know about finances - but the stokie's books tell a different story.
Their funds aren't helped by the fact that Biza never pays his contributions. Biza is a character found in almost every stokie - the 'baaidjievanger'. He never has money or a job and constantly finds new and more inventive ways to get other people to buy him a drink.
Joining Majakathata for the occasional meeting is soft-hearted rugby player, Philane. He's quick on the field, but off the field - to the dismay of the guys - he is quick to break into tears.
This season, the cast welcomes two new additions: Dieketseng Mnisi (who is taking the role of Masechaba) and Ntobeko Rwanqa as Budgets.
Highlights of the new season include Mojo and Lerata hiring a nanny, the members of Sweet Harmony investing in local art, Masechaba deciding to learn to drive, the return of a figure from Hazel's past, Pinkie getting a trainee and Biza gambling Majakathata's money in a pyramid scheme.
Other episodes include Philane becoming Biza's bodyguard, Sweet Harmony holding a beauty spa and the consequences of cellphone madness sweeping through the stokvels.
Broadcast Notes
Season 5 premiered on SABC2 on Sunday 1 July 2007. There are 52 episodes in the season. Twenty-six episodes aired (1 July - 23 December, 2007) until the show went on hiatus. Season 5 resumed on SABC2 on Sunday 30 March 2008, at 19h00.
