SABC2 has announced a new Afrikaans original drama series called Erfsondes (The Sins Of Our Fathers), which is scheduled for release early in July.
Starring soapie heavyweights Catriona Andrew (Egoli), Emmanuel Castis (Isidingo) and Jana Strydom (Egoli), as well as Sello Sebotsane (Stokvel, Andries Plak), Erfsondes is a South African family saga rooted in the universal theme of "the sins of our fathers".
It's a saga about heritage, family, mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, sibling rivalry and love. It looks at the sins of the past and how this comes back to haunt us in the future.
Thirteen episodes will unfold the story of Kate Ferreira searching for her family and becoming involved in the lives of 13 diverse South African families, each with their own sins seeking remission.
The drama revolves around two friends, Kate Ferreira (Jana Strydom) and her partner Ricci September (Mortimer Williams), who own a struggling events management company.
Their company can't seem to rise above small events such as bar mitzvahs, weddings and children's parties, until the ambitious and money-driven Ricci takes matters into his own hands and seizes the opportunity to organise a press launch event for Thabo Kekana (Sello Sebotsane), a property mogul and head of the Izibulo corporation.
He unwittingly drags his friend and partner Kate into the crossfire of an almighty war between Izibulo and Spencer's, a huge corporation owned by Anthony Spencer (Anthony Fridjhon).
Kate is struggling to come to terms with her dark mysterious past, while her life slowly starts falling apart. Caught in an unhappy marriage to Stefan Ferreira (Dirk Stoltz) she finds herself haunted by nightmares, desperately wanting a baby and thinking this could save her marriage.
Unfortunately her path is destined to cross with Chris (Emmanuel Castis) and Samantha Spencer (Catriona Andrew), who are fighting bitterly over their inheritance while their father - who worked his whole life to bring his father's company back to greatness - lies dying of a rare disease.
The feud between the brother and sister soon pulls Kate into their web of lies and deceit, further complicating her desire to find happiness.
Providing the comic relief are the trials and tribulations of the September family, who struggle through their own problems.
Ma Rose (Denise Newman) is a mother hen and busybody who can't resist meddling in Kate and Ricci's lives, while Pa September (Royston Stoffels) struggles to come to terms with his new life as a retired school teacher.
The multilingual series was written by Henriëtta Gryffenberg and directed by Bobby Heaney.
Erfsondes will premiere on SABC2 on Tuesday 3 July, at 19h30.
