It's almost time for the debut of Mzansi Magic's new primetime telenovela Greed & Desire. It replaces The Road once it wraps at the end of this month and premieres on Monday, 4 April at 19h30.

As we spilt earlier this year, it was titled Ke Thaba Bosiu but the name has changed to reflect the themes. It's set in Bloemfontein and centres round the Makhetha family who rose from nothing to build a hotel empire.

A series of tragic events is set in motion when the patriarch of the family is killed in a fit of rage and what follows is a story of... greed and desire as the family implodes after his death.

Many of their lives are ruined when they learn the truth about who murdered him and the rightful heir to the empire doesn't know about their inheritance and the responsibilities that lie ahead.

To get into the groove for the premiere, here's a Who's Who of the main characters:

Maru Makhetha played by Thato Molamu

Maru is charismatic, charming, ruthless and calculating. He's entitled and will destroy and torment those standing in the way of his new found status as a Makhetha leader.

He's torn between two women. Tselane, a gold digger who wants money and status, and Princess Oarabile.

Bongoe Makhetha played by Peter Sephuma

Maru's father. He's a traditionalist and a self made business mogul. Many years ago he fell in love with someone who was considered to be lower class than him but his family wanted him to marry someone they considered to be the same class as him. His biggest disappointment in his life is Maru.

Morakile Selebogo played by Matli Mohapeloa

Morakile is Bongoe’s adopted son and Maru's best friend. He's a good guy who looks up to Bongoe and the values he holds.

Tselane played by Motsoaledi Setumo

Maru's gold digging flame who's always looking for a shortcut to status and money - she'll do anything for them. She pretends to be rich but lives in a four room with her mother and sister who put pressure on her to succeed.

Sharon Dlamini played by Linda Sebezo

Tselane's mother.

Thakane Makhetha played by Nthati Moshesh

Bongoe's matriarchal sister who has never married - being single has allowed her to retain her power in the family. She has been engaged before but her fiance "died". She's influential and traditional.

Nqobile played by Xoli Zondi

Nqobile is a young entrepeur with a budding B&B business. She met Bongoe Makhetha, when she started her business and he became her business mentor.

Princess Oarabile Kgosi played by Keaby Mashugane

The other woman in Maru's life: his fiancé. She's educated and very traditional.

Atleha Makhetha played by Sello Sebotsane

Bongoe and Thakane's brother. A drunken con artist who always shows up on the day of the event. No-one is ever happy to see him but as the older brother he is expected to fulfil cultural roles. He was thrown out of the family after stealing R1-million in a scam.

Kenny Msomi played by Thami Mngqolo

A corrupt cop.

The cast also includes Buyile Mdladla, Nkopano Mohola, Kamo Letsosa and Bonginkosi Shibe.

I don't know about this one. I'm still recovering from the disaster that was The Road (To Nowhere). Interesting cast, but the name could have been more original. I wish we didn't have to put up with yet another telenovella. Oh well... here we go again.

Well, I like watching Greed & Desire. The storyline is tight. However, I'm just offended by their total disregard for African languanges. They keep mixing Sesotho and Setswana as if they are one and the same. It would help to get the right people to assist with writing the scripts really. This just goes to show how much African languages are disrespected.
