A Spy Among Friends

Based on the New York Times best-selling book written by Ben Macintyre, this six-episode series dramatizes the true story of Nicholas Elliott (Damian Lewis) and Kim Philby (Guy Pearce), two British spies and lifelong friends.

Philby was the most notorious British defector and Soviet double agent in history.

This is a story of intimate duplicity; of loyalty, trust and treachery.

Philby's deeply personal betrayal, uncovered at the height of the Cold War, resulted in the gutting of British and American Intelligence.

In the series premiere, "Boom-ooh-yatatatah": In the wake of Kim Philby's escape to Moscow, his closest friend in Britain's Secret Intelligence Service (also known as MI6), Nicholas Elliott, is under investigation by Mrs. Lily Thomas (Anna Maxwell Martin) from the Security Service (MI5).

Did he facilitate Philby's escape because he's also a traitor working for the Russians, or is it just that his judgement was clouded at a critical moment by their 23-year friendship?

Or maybe, just maybe, he in fact had the last laugh having manipulated Philby to run to the bosom of the KGB for foreign intelligence purposes.

Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations

Curious culinarian and James Beard Award-winning chef Andrew Zimmern continues his search for the most interesting dishes across the globe in Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations.

The 13-episode series, an extension of the Bizarre Foods franchise, takes you on an international journey to iconic cities around the world for a taste of their quintessential, not-to-be missed dishes.

From melt-in-your-mouth chocolate in Zurich to decadent gelato in Florence, savoury paella in Barcelona to creamy clam chowder in Boston, the series is an exploration of iconic foods, where they came from, how they are made, and the right way to eat them.

Visiting cities such as London, Munich, Hong Kong, New Orleans and more, Zimmern takes viewers into the kitchens where generations of chefs prepare and serve the cities' most beloved dishes.

In the series premiere, "Athens": This episode explores the ancient city of Athens, Greece and some of its most recognisable food, beginning with gyros and souvlaki.

Along with a third generation restaurant owner, Zimmern guides you through the unique preparation of classic dishes, and reveals how the Greek have perfected these timeless recipes.

Next, Zimmern stops at Krinos bakery for deliciously deep-fried Greek doughnuts called loukamades, followed by a look at the story behind spanakopita - a multi-cultural mash-up of flakey dough with spinach and feta filling.

The art of making spanakopita is such a highly-regarded skill in Athens that a professional guild exists for the chefs who have perfected it.

Zimmern goes on to find koulouri, a Greek culinary necessity similar to a bagel; dolmades, delicately stuffed grape leaves; and of course, Greek yogurt, which is anything but what you see on grocery store shelves in America.

In the second episode of the weekday double bill, "Florence": Florence, Italy lives up to its artistic reputation even in its food.

Andrew explores classics like the rare Florentine steak, the original cappuccino and gelato.

Everybody Hates Chris

Channel: Comedy Central (DStv 122)
TX Time: 16h00
Genre: Comedy

Everybody Hates Chris

A sitcom inspired by the teenage experiences of comedian Chris Rock (who narrates the show), while growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn.

Motivated by his childhood experiences, Rock narrates this story of a teenager growing up as the oldest of three children in Brooklyn, New York during the early 1980s.

Uprooted to a neighbourhood and bussed into a primarily white middle school two hours away by his strict, hard-working parents, Chris struggles to find his place, all while keeping his younger brother and sister in line at home and surmounting the tests of junior high school.

The year that Chris turned 13 was 1982.

Filled with dreams that being a teenager would be really cool, Chris' entry into adolescence is turning out to be less pleasant.

Moved from the projects to the tough "Bed-Stuy" neighbourhood of Brooklyn, Chris is still stuck in his big brother role.

As the family's "emergency adult," he's accountable for taking care of his younger brother Drew and his younger sister Tonya, while his parents are working.

Drew, although younger, is taller and more confident than Chris, while Tonya is the baby of the family, who gets all of the attention from his parents.

Chris' rough, cost-conscious father Julius works numerous jobs in order to properly support his family.

Meanwhile, his very strict, sassy mother Rochelle, who works part-time in a small real estate office, runs the household on a very tight budget, while demanding the best for her children.

With his mother strong-minded to see him in a good school, Chris reluctantly faces multiple bus transfers each day to attend Corleone Junior High School in the fiercely Italian neighbourhood, South Shore.

Although being an immediate target for bullies, Chris' innate charm and sharp wit enable him to make new friends at school, such as Greg, another smart, nice kid... who can't fight.

As Chris Rock pointedly looks back, his younger self is set to find what his family already knows: Chris' sharp, scrappy character is going to take him places.

But first, he's going to have to think, talk or run his way through one growing experience after another at both home and school, and on any number of buses along the way.
