Cape Town is a South African/German crime drama television miniseries created by Annette Reeker and based on the novel Dead Before Dying by Deon Meyer which follows burnt-out detective Mat Joubert as he tries to deal with a major serial killer case whilst dealing with the mess that is his personal life.
The series stars Trond Espen Seim (The Legacy) and Boris Kodjoe (Resident Evil, Soul Food) and is set against the dramatic and beautiful backdrop of Cape Town.
Following the story of two very different detectives, the protagonists shine a flashlight into the shadows of the city and Cape Town proves to be a character in itself: culturally rich and beautiful, but also fractured and harbouring dark secrets behind its glamorous façade.
Every city needs a great investigator, and now the Mother City has a grizzled detective of her very own. And, like the best sleuths in the business, Cape Town's flawed hero has his fair share of demons.
Mat Joubert used to be the best in the business, until his wife was murdered while on the job. Now an overweight, disillusioned Joubert – with a drinking problem to boot – is faced with an ultimatum from his new chief Bart de Wit (Jody Abrahams): to shape up or ship out.
Additionally, Mat is assigned a new partner, Sanctus Snook (Boris Kodje), who is a graduate of the elite unit HAWKS and former colleague of his wife Lara. Mat instinctively does not like the sleek ex-elite cop and has a hard time believing the pairing up is a coincidence.
The duo are assigned two major cases: a series of brutal murders involving men wearing masks of famous people and the deaths and disappearances of young European women. Is there a link?
Their hunt for the culprits forces Joubert to confront his darkest fears – will he be able to exorcise the ghost of his wife's murder? Or will his hunt for murderers unlike any other drive him over the edge of sanity?
The series introduces viewers to Norwegian actor Trond Espen Seim (Varg Veum), as the tormented Joubert. Resident Evil and Soul Food star Boris Kodjoe plays his partner, Sanctus Snook.
Cape Town also features a strong contingent of South Africans in the cast, including Hard Copy's Jody Abrahams, Colin Moss of Idols and Isidingo, Irshaad Ally (Survivor South Africa, Suidooster), Home Affairs star Jessica Haines, Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) and veteran actor Ian Roberts (Tsotsi, The Wild).
Cape Town is produced by all-an-production and Out of Africa Entertainment and distributed by Dynamic Television. The drama is written by Anna Tebbe, directed by Peter Ladkani, produced by Annette Reeker and Lance Samuels, and executive produced by Zeljko Karajica, Klaus Zimmermann and Daniel March.
