Poena is a South African, Afrikaans-language television sitcom based on a character created for the 2003 sitcom Gauteng-alêng-alêng, which spun off into the 2007 film Poena is Koning (Poena is King), as well as the follow-up TV movies Poena (2020) and Poena en Poenie (2021).
In the series we meet Poena Pieterse (Robbie Wessels) who has lost his job as a singer on a cruise ship and lives with his unemployed cousin Poenie (Kaz McFadden) at his grandfather Poen's (At Botha) house.
Also living there is Poen's beloved Coco de Kok (Liane Heyl) and her daughter Chanel (Lauren Botha).
Needless to say it is chaos with so many people under one roof.
Poen decides to move to Paternoster where he gets into all kinds of trouble with his friend Vis (Lochner de Kock), while Poena and Poenie take over Poen's Plumbing.
Their marketing tagline for the business is "We are number one in the number two game".
But it is not only plumbing that keeps them busy – they also work on their other dreams.
Poena is still dreaming of becoming a successful singer and luckily he has music producer Elton Lamoer (Reginald Hufkie) to help him along the way.
Then there is Shakira Haasbroek (Danielle Retief), the sexy pole dancer who has caught Poena's eye...
Poena is an M-Net Original Production, produced by WESTEL for kykNET.
The show was created and written by Willie Esterhuizen and directed by his brother, Pieter Esterhuizen.
All songs were written and performed by Robbie Wessels.
