Season 1
Loxion Lyric is a South African youth drama television series created by Alethea Lindsay, Phybia Dlamini, Fanie Mathibela and Lee McCabe and produced by Imagine That Films which follows a group of township youngsters who form a band called Loxion Lyric, only for the founder members to discover that a large part of being successul musicians in South Africa revolves around good money management - a skill they sorely lack.
They couldn't be more different - the neighbourhood bully, a spoilt rich brat, the social outcast of the community, the son of a famous musician, and an iziKhothane star – yet their lives are set on a collision course, to form a band they'll dub Loxion Lyric.
Obliged to form the band to fulfill the conditions of a magistrate's parole, the two founder members Spikiri and Brian scout their community to find musicians that complement their own talent.
But their poor money management skills force them to partner with wannabe musicians who'll give anything for their 10 minutes of fame.
As the five young adults plunge towards their first performance in the local town hall they're up against not only an unsupportive community, but also their own inner demons.
Even though he has the most to lose, a granny and five siblings to support, Spikiri can't shake his drive to "get rich quick"; whilst eager-to-please Brian just gives all his hard-earned money away.
Stapura's addicted to dice and the iziKhothane lifestyle, whilst spoilt Thandi is so used to getting what she wants, she doesn't understand the value of money.
Only Karabo, the "untouchable" of the township, has much she can teach them all – but she's yet to get any of the other band members to look her in the eye...
It's clear: should the band have any long-term chance of survival, or even make it the National Arts Festival in June, they'll have to pull together and learn something about money.
Loxion Lyric uses the backdrop of young adult drama and stories of coming of age to model savings and good financial management to South African viewers, young and old.
The series is based on the premise that when financial skills are modeled to young adults, this can result in a change in the way the larger nation saves up and accumulates its wealth, thereby redressing the imbalances of the past.
The starring cast are Chumani Pan (Brian), Malizo Mdekazi (Spikiri), Xolile Maluka (Karabo), Mpume Ngwenya (Thandi) and Phumello Nkosi (Stapura).
Produced by Imagine That Films, the series was written and created by Alethea Lindsay, Phybia Dlamini, Fanie Mathibela and Lee McCabe. The series producers were Lindsay and McCabe, the supervising producer was Beverley Mitchell and the series directors were Zuko Nodada and Phybia Dlamini.
The title song, uThando iWakho, was originally produced by TCTEE Music and adapted for Loxion Lyric by Underscore Studios. The vocals are by Kabelo Modiba, Xolile Maluka and Malizo Mdekazi.
