Season 1
Kompleks is a South African, Afrikaans-language television drama series set in two parallel universes which tells the story of two teenagers that fall in love during a winter holiday and how the future will be decided on the decisions they make.
In one of the universes it is the winter holiday of 2019. Sean and Mika (played by Arthur Falko and Melissa Myburgh) are two teenagers. They are at home and their friends are away.
Sean's parents (Milan Murray and Stian Bam) exist in silence, while Mika's parents (Therese Bam and Paul du Toit) are about to divorce.
Then by pure chance - which includes a wasp and a dog leash - the two teenagers meet, and everything changes.
Through random conversations, planet hunting and a shared love for music, a relationship starts that will define their entire existence.
In another universe, similar to this one yet different, it is the beginning of 2019. In this universe Sean and Mika are much older.
Sean (Armand Aucamp) is an actuary and his friends think he is lonely. Mika (Roeline Daneel) is a widow, and her daughter thinks she's lonely.
Then Sean meets Belinda (Greta Pietersen) and Mika meets Tristan (Ivan Botha).
Both decide to give love another chance, but in the back of their minds is a winter holiday many years ago and the forgotten dream of a friendship.
The two universes are brought together with Koos Kombuis as the narrator of the story. Deon Meiring is responsible for the theme song and his, as well as Kombuis' songs, are used throughout the series.
The series makes use of several unique storytelling techniques such as hearing the teenagers' thoughts, split screens, and the use of abstract imagery to portray emotions.
The series is not only for young people, but for anyone who has lost their hearts at some stage.
The series tagline is "two universes, four hearts, one soul".
Kompleks also stars Crystal-Donna Roberts, Stephren Saayman, Wian Taljaard, Nicol Steyn, Keeno Lee, Daniah de Villiers and Nancia Dorland.
